Before you go to Venice, watch "The Merchant of Venice" - a movie with Al Pacino playing the Jewish merchant of the title. It's literally based on a stage play of Shakespeare and has two endings. Or read Shakespeare's original piece. If you stop at the first intermezzo as if the story ends, it is complaint about segregation and discrimination. The part of the story that follows is to make the story end in a politically correct way for the moral majority of Shakespeare's times. The old Jewish community of Venice had its own gated quarter called "ghetto" and that's still there with its gates and synagogues. Well, there is (used to be) a kosher restaurant in that ghetto and it was very good. The doors have been removed from the gate houses. As you mispronounce "canals" (waterways) and make them "kennels" (doghouses) note that English is the language of extreme mispronunciation. Every word's pronunciation must be taught to you, but in Shakespeare's days that was much less the case. So if you read Shakespeare with your knowledge of English and Dutch, you can see where it should rhyme based on your Dutch knowledge and how it does not rhyme any more in today's pronunciation of English (dominant confusion ...). Yes, Shakespeare rhymed and had perfect metre.

How do they ... When in Venice, I saw police in boats, ambulance in boats, fire brigade in boats, newspaper piles distributed from boats to pickup points for the delivery people, construction work boats with hydraulic lifting arms, boats as taxi, and the canal bus boat. When you arrive in Venice, make sure to be near a starting point of the canal bus, buy a ticket for as many days as you are there and it may also take you to the small islands off main Venice. The nicest delivery tech in my eyes were the wheelbarrows of the package-post delivery men that took packages to Venetian homes from the barge drop off points. Two flat planes in 90 degrees L on two long sticks and two bigger wheels, one on each side towards the rear of the L, to drag the wheelbarrow behind you. But the pulling sticks extend at the back end beyond the L and have tiny wheels at their ends. These tiny wheels are used together with the large wheels to wiggle slide leverage the wheel barrow up bridge stairs in front of you and down the other side behind you. Today in lightweight aluminum, I saw these exact same wheelbarrows depicted in street/square scenes made from wood, in 400 year old paintings.

Your videos are wonderful. We are planning a trip that will include Cinque Terre, Venice and the Dolomites among others. I am not sure we will be able to tackle the hikes you went on but still looking forward to some amazing landscape. I had considered cutting our 2 nights in Venice but this video has made me reconsider. Your photography is amazing. Which camera did you use for the evening shots? Any tips for flying drones in Italy…we have read the Italian rules.
@LetsMeetAbroad2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Emily! 🤗 That plan sounds great! We believe Venice is really a must visit, but we were there 1 full day and that was enough! We use the Sony a7siii for the evening shots, it's great in low light. For the drone: just stay above water! And don't do crazy stuff haha 😉 and for sure not fly in the bigger cities as Venice and Milano!

Today's gondola are asymmetric. Look at them from above and, like the cross section of an airplane's wing, you'll see one side is flatter than the other. This gives a "lift" effect to enable propulsion with the oar from one side only and sail in a straight line at that. That was a way to reduce the cost of labor as before the gondola would be rowed by two men, one at the bow, one at the stern. My impression from canal cruises in gondola is that there is a guild (mob?) of sailors that dominate (terrorize the other sailors?) the more beautiful canals and set the hourly rates. If you want cheap, you;ll sail the back alleys. The gondola boats are incredibly expensive, by the way and there may still be only one "original" boat builder left in Venice, now.
@LetsMeetAbroad3 жыл бұрын
Nice information! 😄 Yep we ended up not going in the gondola, the prices are crazy..

Venice is a must do! It is best not to visit in the typical holiday months as then it is too crowded and to hot. Venice is crowded and very expensive but the vibe is unique and the sights are very much worth viewing once in your life. Best tip to give to potential visitors: Try to book a stay over OUTSIDE of the city. It is sooooooo much cheaper ! We stayed at Casa B & B in Mirano and it was wonderful!

You took us back to the times when we were in Venice. Such a pretty place it is and I think it stands up to all the hype. Just avoid touristy season and you will have a great time there. Amazing video and such good captures. One thing that I missed when we were there was the evening lights inside San Marco Square which you showed in your video, that seemed mesmerising just from the video. Probably would go there again just for this. Keep up the great work ❤️

It makes me so sad when I see people on youtube go to Dal Moro just because it's the most rated place on tripadvisor. But its especially baffling that you went to the trouble of racing back into the city to make sure you got there before it closed. The amount of litter and crowding that it generates in that area is so depressing. And while I'm not sure if they have been successful, I know that the city was trying to ban new places like it from opening. There are a ton of great and affordable restaurants in Venice for those who take the time to look, ones that actually offer something uniquely Venetian-which Dal Moro doesn't. You should know that your overall approach of trying to spend as little money as possible by picnicking for every meal is indicative of an attitude (shared by many) that is adding tremendous strain on a city that it already struggling to cope in so many ways. Sadly this is the typical way youtubers visit Venice: on the cheap, for a single day, with little to no research beyond wikipedia and tripadvisor. Shallow content for content's sake that through laziness and ignorance ends up setting a bad example for everyone that watches it.
@LetsMeetAbroad2 жыл бұрын
I understand your reaction, but there might be also another reason why people picnic. We don't like overcrowded restautants, not at all...😀 and we make videos, that's what we love. Having food in a restaurant makes it harder for us to film. So you will mostly see us doing take away 😀
@bwana-ma-coo-bah4252 жыл бұрын
Here are some tips for any one who is going to visit Venice. Venice is visually nice. 1. stay on the main land and walk across the bridge to visit the sites. 2. the restaurants have 2 menus, 1 for the locals and 1 for the tourists. 3. avoid at all costs buying anything in the island, everything is cheaper on the main land. 4. navigate your way carefully, what looks like a path to someone's house, is actually a street. If you follow this advise , you will have a good time.
@LetsMeetAbroad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! We're sure it will help people 😄
