This Skate Contest I went to way back in the early to mid nineties had some of the heavy hitters in the skate world back then. Koston, Markovich, Vallely, and the Michael Jordan of skate boarding, Jovontae Turner.

The dude in the green indy shirt is Jason Rothmeyer. I remember him because it's me. Ha, stoked to see the footage up, thanks to whoever that put it on here. It's crazy to watch stuff that you never saw footage of in the first place. My first pro contest. Jovantae is butterz on here.

I saw you skate this, you killed it, I didn't know this was your first pro contest. I think you're one of the most consistent skateboarders ever. This is truly amazing footage whoever posted, oh remember how amazing Markovich an Salman skated too.

Dude, it was my pleasure to post this video featuring a few seconds of your runs that day. I will try to find the video tape again and re edit it to show more of the footage. You definately showed some talent out there. I was just happy to have a skateboard contest hit my area so I went to venice beach with my video 8 cam and kept trying to get whoever was doing nice tricks. The dude in the green indy snuck in my vid a few times cuz he got down.

I remember reading about this contest in eighth grade! I remember because it had a picture of Markovich's board in the kiddie pool after the contest.

Pro still? Hell no, way too old now. I work for Fallen and judge contests for a living now. Still nice to be in the mix at events, just on the other side trying to keep things fun for everyone. Thanks for the compliment on the part.

I had a Jovontae Turner Girl board back in the day and it was the best shape I've ever ridden

Dude, when I say Michael Jordan of skateboarding, I mean because of the way he skates so smooth. The style. Perfect example is that 360 kickflip he did in the video. And because race too. He was one of the few brothas getting down in skateboarding. Thats what I meant.

"...is turning into these days." ? Man, it was already turned like this back in the late 90s and early 2000.
@autentyk573516 жыл бұрын
ok, now I read the earlier comments. you forgot, but have been reminded; I remember that contes from so many videos/ video magazines/ magazines as in "printed". Any media was welcome those days!

You know what.. that is EXACTLY how skating is turning into these days. I wish Skating was like it was back in the late 90's or early 2000's.

Venice Beach is gonna be home to a really nice new skate park. FYI to all the peeps that dont know already. I saw it just last weekend. Way better than the small one they have their now. Man when I think back to skating there coming up that ramp ollien over the barrels, that was the day. But they would always stop us after a while. I felt like a venice beach veteran tho. Cuz I had homies up there that started to acknowledge me when I showed up. I wasnt great but I had my trick bag.

the little kid with the black shirt and the blonde hair doing the pop-shove-it-late-shove over the hip, is that mariano?
@nigelgeiger6020 Жыл бұрын
Mariano wasn’t a little kid in 93. He was Mariano from mouse at that point.

Yeah, mostly when I go to judge contests. Lots of good places to skate while out and about in other cities. Probably out 1-2 times a week if I'm lucky, but that's just what happens when you get old. I still prefer a good ledge/manny pad to anything.

im sure this is the contest that ws used in plan b questionable video contest montage.

the first dude u see is Kris Markovich. Vallely is in the yellow shirt with white cap. I dont know who is in the green Independent shirt. The real thick lookin dude that does that nice move at 1:41 is somebody who's name I cant remember anymore, but he was known for being a stocky skater. And Jovontae at the end in the green shirt, blue cap. Gotta love that fake 360 kickflip.

Where in Venice was this?

Its in the parking lot between the beach and Cadillac Hotel. Look up Cadillac Hotel Venice and then the beach parking. Of course this was something like 30 years ago now. But back then I was a skateboarder and bike rider all over the beaches of LA. I think back then I heard of the contest and took either my dad's VHS cam corder.

Yea, Jov's fakie 360 flip was as smooth then, as Arto Saari's today. Tpp bad he stopped skating. He would've been the Top-5 skaters, hands down.

I really hated that flippy shit. Skateboarding went to hell when people started doing 360 flips. I lost my spot on my local skateshop team because I couldn't do any of this. It didn't matter that I could do a huge transfer across a ramp channel or a 540. It's the sad truth of skating that if you can't adapt and be trendy, then you can't make it a career. That's not to say, though, that you can't still have fun with it.
@joekinse579612 жыл бұрын
no skateboarding is all about fashion i see so many kids do it for trend not pashion its sad
