What a great video and a beautiful family! your son is so adorable. I visited Tongli a few years back and simply loved it. At that time, there was no MRT and I took a cab there, the weather was good and less people. Tongli is less commercialized than other watertowns such as the one near Shanghai called Zhujiajiao.

These birds there are supposed to help the fishermen catch fish in the river, it is an old tradition in some parts of China.

Talking about travelling around China...the ancient town called Lijiang in Yunnan province is very beautiful, you may consider visiting it in spring or autumn. The town called Yangshuo in Guangxi province is also very nice and popular among western tourists, some of them stay on for years and never go back to their home countries. You mentioned you want to visit Harbin, good choice, my wife and son visited there a few years back in winter and they were so lucky to see snow there. However it is very cold , minus 30 degree in December and January, the river is frozen, 1-2 m thick and people can walk or ride bicycles on the surface...wait until your son grows older before you go there. The city is exotic, full of Russian elements (the dark bread, the Russian traditional soup, the Russian ice cream, the Russian church and buildings), nothing like any other Chinese cities, really worth visiting.

I am a japanese expatriate living in Shanghai for 18 years and you are so right tongli is such a beautiful water canal town and underrated , tongli is very "real" with people actually living in these beautiful neighbourhoods and if you go early enough you can actually see the real chinese going about their daily chores, I loved tongli. there is plenty of beautiful places to visit around Shanghai , try huanghsan(yellow mountain) and the neighbouring old villages like honhgchun(red village) where they film grouching tiger hidden dragon, lots of amazing old villages and amazing nature reserve, I loved huangshan esp when it snow its looks just like the chinese ink paintings and you start to realise how these poetic pine mountains have inspired thousand of ancient chinese artist, calligrapher and poets. china and india and nepal is my top three countries to travel, enjoy the beautiful time in china.

What actually caught my attention was that you left your child with that rickshaw wala. I am amazed by the trust and safety. I am a Chinese born and raised in India but settled in US now. Your videos make me want to visit China more and more. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy it . Currently there is so much hate through out the world. Great....if I am not wrong Suzhou rains a lot in early spring...when I was there a few years back it was also drizzling in the evening, Some people enjoy the scenery in the rain especially when you walk across a stone bridge there and watch the boats pass by. Hangzhou is also beautiful and it seldom rains, the West Lake along with the temples and famous long bridge is very impressive.

I went to Tongli like 20 years ago. It doesn't change much. You really should book a hotel and stay one night or two there. The night in those water towns are the best. You will see no hustle and bustle as in daytime. It's more quiet and serene, just like in a poem. Pity that you could see the sunset there. Sitting on the stone bridge and watch sunset over the water is amazing. I also recommend you Nanxun Water town in Huzhou, Zhejiang. I am a water town lover, and have been to six or seven ancient water towns myself. Nanxun is the one that has left me the deepest impression. It is not very commercialized, you can have the peaceful feeling watching children getting back home after school and old people chatting under the big tree near the river. Always remember to book a room in a hundred-year-old house from airbnb. You all have totally different experience at night.

Tongli is a typical water town in Yangtze River Delta, people used to trade and transport on these canals, this is the old aspect of Suzhou and also my favorite.

Raining day is the perfect day to enjoy the deep beauty of Suzhou. There is a phrase called 烟雨江南( "Misty rain in Jiangnan regions"), 江南 often refers to Jiangsu Province(where Suzhou City belongs to), Shanghai City, Zhejiang Province and Anhui Province in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It's not because Jiangnan rains a lot, but 烟雨江南 is like a melancholy but beautiful, lovable and girl and often occurs in ancient poems to portrait the reluctant feelings of separation.

New and old mixed into 1 city, that's actually very nice. Everything is so different than my country, is it still very cold out in China? Everyone is wearing warm clothes. And they take the Covid restrictions very seriously it seems, checks everywhere.

China has a large land area. Cities in the north have obvious four seasons, so there will be cold winters and hot summers in the north. The temperature change in southern cities is relatively small. Even in winter, it is usually not too cold, but there are also hot summers. Before travelling, you can use a temperature map to check the real-time temperature of all regions.

China is big. Suzhou is like in the middle in terms of latitude. The temperature can drop to 2-3 degree in cold winter days. In the North, it could be -30, even -40 , but the heating system indoors is super comfy. In further South , like in Hainan, you can have tropical paradise even in winter, where the temperature can be over 30 degree. Yes, you can have an over 60 degree temperature difference on the same day in different cities in China.

There are many six ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River around Shanghai that are worth visiting. Among them, ZhouZhuang, TongLi and LuZhi are in Suzhou, WuZhen and XiTang are in Jiaxing, and NanXun is in Shaoxing. Of course, it is more beautiful at night than during the day and worth playing. Zhujiaojiao is 1700 yrs older than 1500 yrs old Venice which means during the Silk Route trade with Europe, Their Envoys must have seen these Magnificient Water Town and were fascinated with the idea of developing in in their Home Town. And Hence, Venice came into being. Even Pizza is debated in China as to whether its original form was Chinese?

OMGoodness, Suzhou is also where Li Ziqi the wonderful and talented blogger lives. It is so peaceful and like your contemplation, makes you think about our purpose in life chasing material wealth.
