6:47 My only issue with this video. Venom wasn’t exposed to the fire for that long. He got hurt, but that wasn’t enough exposure to kill him. I’m sure both blue and orange flames will kill a symbiote, given enough time. That’s how Riot died, burning in the spaceship for a while before getting blown up. Not exactly a contradiction. However, I do like what you said about “show, don’t tell.” I think that point was very valid.
@TheGravityAxe4 жыл бұрын
I agree, you can see Venom retreat from the blue fire. Shows just how vulnerable they are to fire, if it hurts enough to withdraw when exposed even for a second.

Guys... Every living creature is "vulnerable" to fire and would get hurt by it. The thing is, Venom is resistant to most other sources of damage, so fire is the most effective tool. Humans can die from fire, but it takes some time.

If you think about it, Venom hiding from the fire is a rather way of showing his weakness. Since symbiotes can't live without their host, for Venom to allow the best host it's had to be burned instead of protecting him goes to show the symbiote couldn't have done much against the fire.

I think they could've fixed the problem of opening and the weak "double villain" thing with just changing the crash scene. It can take place anywhere, that's fine. Just make it so that it happens somewhat like this: 1) Ship crashing. 2) Carlton and the gang gets there and starts capturing the symbiots and some people get killed. 3) Eddie who's already in the same country for other investigative reasons relating to Carlton's company gets there and starts to ask questions/bother them, showing that Carlton and Eddie dislike eachother. 4) Eddie managing to somehow steal Venom to use for evidence but Venom escapes and enters Eddie. 5) Carlton now has more direct reasons to go after Eddie, causing Eddie to loose his job and so on. 6) Riot is in Carlton from the very start, that's why the ship is there, this way we don't get the unnessecary "travel time" or the "double villain" thing since they have the same goal from the start. But hey, this is just how I'd do it.

@ Theta, this was a REALLY good plot idea which would have fixed pretty much all the issues the film had, including pacing. I remember watching the third act if the film, when the Riot symbiote manages to get to the facility and bonds with Carlton. My immediate thought was....really?! They spend the ENTIRE FILM showing this menacing alien first escaping from the ambulance, then hitching parasitic taxi rides from person to person....JUST to get back to the facility that it would have gone to from the beginning had it stayed put?? It all just seemed so... pointless. Not to mention the question of why it took this thing 6months. When the audience is able to come up with a better plot for the film than the writer(s) who was (were) paid MILLIONS to do it, did, well...

Considering how the movie ends, I'm really confused why they didn't try to make Eddie and his ex good friends since they clearly weren't ever gonna get together. Making her less of a love interest and more of a friend would've really saved the movie and made Venom shipping them much funnier due to an even more awkward tension. Imagine a more Cap and Black Widow dynamic. The villain would need a complete rework tho. Like the movie would need a lot of changes to make that work, the most obvious one being to switch Venom and Riot so that Riot and Drake can actually bond and we could cut out a lot of the terrible fluff before Venom meets Eddie

I feel, that with great writing, you can tell people something without having to show it. Like Daredevil season 2 when Punisher is talking about what happened to his family. There was more emotional weight just hearing him talking about it without showing it on screen.

Yes if the Actor has the talent to sale it in words. I was also thinking about Riggs in the first Lethal Weapon movie when he tells Murtaugh about his skilled marksmanship.
@alexcazet26945 жыл бұрын
Anthony Caldwell yes but I think it’s different because it’s a monologue delivered for the sake of character development as opposed to lackadaisically telling the viewer important information about the movie that the viewer will need in order to make sense of the movies events. The movie is showing punisher describe what happened to his family- the power comes from his acting and the way he has been impacted by the events- it does not merely exist to move the plot along or give the viewer information.
@louisvictor34735 жыл бұрын
Yer slightly mistaken here. They did show what they wanted, which wasn't his backstory. What they showed was how it scared his mind for life - him recalling the event + proper acting is what shows you that. Seeing an event is an attempt to trigger emotional responses on you. Problem is, it will be ur emotions, not that of someone who got traumatised by the event in a specific way. That specific trauma is shown by the way said person reacts while recalling the event much more clearly. Does require superior acting to pull it off, while showing an event just requires u to throw money at the problem.
@malcomchase97775 жыл бұрын
Punisher exists because his Frank's family was killed. You see the effects of what happened from the moment a dude with a skull in his chest starts gunning gangsters down. Having him explain it just gives context to what we see on the screen. Imagine he told the same story while sipping margaritas at the beach and after we see a scene of him fucking a waitress with a smile on his face. The best actor in the world couldn't sell a damaged man out for vengance if the movie is showing us a playboy on vacation. That's "show, don't tell". It's not about never using dialogue, it's about using the action to compliment what you are saying.

I loved this movie except for the pacing, the villain choice + how weak of a villain he was, and Brock and Anne's kinda flat relationship. If I wrote this movie and fixed the main issue, the villain, I would've just made the villain Scream. Scream, for those who don't know, is the yellow symbiote seen in the movie. In the comics her host was the wife of the Riot host along with being the leader of the Life Foundation Symbiotes. Personally, I would've made Carlton sorta secondary and make Scream the main villain with her own host. Something like this: Scream, similar to Venom, is a nobody rather than a loser. On their planet she isn't really acknowledged even though she is actually one of the strongest symbiotes. Scream ends up on earth with Venom and Riot. Have Scream be successfully bonded with one of Carlton's goons and slowly build her up to be going crazier and crazier from all the power Scream has given her. Build a connection between the two where they both feel like nobody's who deserve recognition for being the best at what they do (Scream being a powerful symbiote and her host maybe being a great hit-woman for Carlton's loose ends?) Carlton sees how crazy she's become and tries to kill the symbiote and host, which ends in her brutally murdering him and everyone else in the facility. This happens the same night the rocket is supposed to launch. Venom and Scream get into a fight, yadda yadda basically just the Riot fight. Screams motivations and villainy would be something like how she wants to kill symbiotes and humans for how they wronged her and the host. This makes the stakes much higher and more personal for both Venom and Eddie since both their people are endangered. Idk, just how I would've done it.
@PsychicSiren7 Жыл бұрын
I feel like this would have been a great idea for either a sequel or maybe a prequel movie, because while I am attached to the plot of the first movie, and the sequel with Carnage was pretty good as well, I feel like scream and any other female symbiote or, heck, any symbiote other than Venom and Carnage don't really get any recognition. And while there might be symbiote hosts such as Mania from the comics or Shriek or Silence, all of those hosts and symbiotes are very obscure and only happen with comic-specific events.

I gotta say, I really can't stand how condescending some of the fans of the movie are towards people who didn't like it. like, if you bring up a number of valid criticisms of the movie, these people usually don't acknowledge the criticisms and try to respond to them, they just completely hand wave them away and go "well I loved it so screw you". and you should see all the stupid excuses they come up with for why the movie got bad reviews from critics. I always hear "the critics lied" or "the critics are biased towards the MCU" or "critics only hated it because it doesn't have political messages". it's like they just heard that critics gave it bad reviews and they just took it at face value and automatically started complaining, like they didn't even look in to what the critics didn't like about it. some criticized the lack of character development, some criticized the inconsistent tone, and so far I haven't heard them try to rebut against the specific points, all I ever hear is "screw you it was great."

Tons of food taste good, it's quick to make, it's cheap, but it can be bad for you or not that nutritious. Why would you criticize someone would tried to identify a flaw. It doesn't mean you can't eat it or that it's toxic or that you can't like it. Everyone says "it's just a movie". Movies aren't above critique. We all want better films. We all want the best value for our time and money. I don't get why people don't get excited about figuring out how or at least supporting conversations that try and figure out how to do that in a level headed manner. This video wasn't as mean spirited as it could have been. It proposed a method to attempt an improvement. It didn't shit on it. It tried to understand it and help it achieve what it wanted.

Bloobs McGargen I didn't see any critics acting like it was "the worst movie in existence". they just said they thought it was a mess, which I can totally understand someone thinking. and even though they disliked the movie, most of them said that they thought the comedy scenes between Eddie and the suit, they just criticized the script, which the fans of the movie haven't so much tried to defend but more so completely ignored. sure, comparing it to Catwoman and fant4stic a bit hyperbolic, but it was only a couple critics who said that, I felt most of them were pretty fair.

That was an example of showing, though. Because the point of that line isn't that the Millennium Falcon is fast, it's that Han himself is a braggart and a bullshitter. After he says that line, Luke and Obi-Wan exchange a very skeptical look, showing that A. his claim is ridiculous and B. they don't believe it. That scene establishes what kind of character Han is without anyone listing his traits or motivations and also reaffirms how desperate Luke and Obi-Wan's situation is, that they'll accept a ride from some jackass they don't trust because they need to get off Tatooine that badly. Besides, we do see that the Millennium Falcon is fast later. Its speed isn't only established through dialogue. We see that it can go light speed and that it does well in a dogfight. Telling without showing would be if Han brags about how fast the Falcon is and then we never see it fly. We just cut from Tatooine to them at Alderaan or whatever.

8:08 - It's only when I watched this video, I realised that Eddie's girlfriend was a lawyer. I didn't even realise it when watching the movie itself. So, I guess he's right about the "Show, Don't Tell" thing. It IS very important.

If it was rated R then i think i would've loved him much more like the new Joker film.

While I personally enjoyed the movie quite a bit, I will admit that it has a lot of problems. This video is very well articulated and I think many of your points are valid.

You could use his same argument to trash a lot of "hero" films that are successful though, and didn't get nearly the hate Venom did. Thor, Iron man, and Capt. America all did these same things he said, and weren't nearly as blown apart.

Good Point.

@@JambopaulGamerInPJs his points are really good though, and now that I've seen this video, I will forever have it in my head about extra beginning prologue issues. Lol.

How did Venom sympathizes with humanity by climbing up a building?

Because he has access to Eddie's memories.

The story you portrayed in the end seemed amazing. They definitely couldn't make an amazing story but yet it being a hit is just the reason they should make a sequel where they don't have to make a prologue and a back story of the rise of the venom and get straight to the point. But heck I love your version, that would've been amazing

I think they could have gone with something like a scene of spaceship crashing in the prologue before the Title. Than should have gone with eddy in his new broken down bad boy apartment where he is shown to be a sad guy who is missing his ex. (that shows that something happened between them that was really serious and not some stupid thing like in the movie this is something where telling would have worked rather than showing maybe make him look at some old pictures of them having fun but just that) the character arc should be him coping up with reality that they are not together anymore Than he gets approached by that scientist lady who he suddenly freaksout over because he recognises her. Which establishes that there was something serious that happened between him and the LIFE that make him lost his job and his girlfriend that he loved. Let the scenario be mystery and the important details be conveyed through the character interactions we need to only know as much as we want for the story. Than let the whole movie play like usual just add that super cut 40 min of Tom Hardy that apparently got cut out. I think that leaves us with a decent movie

Jimmy Parker perfect review right there 😆 I enjoyed it while I was watching it but that was mostly because of the fact that venom is cool and it had some funny parts. Wonderful trainwreck

He's not even hating on the movie. He is offering creative ideas of how it could be better. Seriously the haters are the people disliking this video. God bless 😇

The horrid feeling of seeing an anatomy of a failure video on a movie you actually love and knowing you're gonna end up agreeing on its issues because this man makes rock solid points

i agree with you, but the loving scenes before the break up are really great and i wouldn't wanna cut them out, even if the movie would end up better. Maybe a memory-slide mid movie remembers them fighting, then jolts back to reality when a bus driver shouts if he's gonna get on or not.

Wow I was wondering how you were going to call Venom a failure, but I Love storytelling, and I agree with pretty much all your points Filmento🤔 Very well articulated sir.

If you want to see how Venom should have been just watch „Upgrade“! The actor looks like Tom Hardy btw

This movie is like an action rom-com and that's precisely why I liked it. Also, the fact that the romance is between Eddie and Venom makes it so much better. I never read the comics but I always knew from the internet that those two were basically canonically married in every single way.
