If you've watched Young Justice, the alien voice is actually a bit malevolent in the cartoon. It makes for a good dynamic because it's constantly trying to make him "terminate" people while he resists. I sort of wish they had gone that route instead of making it so the alien voice stopped him from doing something drastic.

What came first? Blue Beetle or Spawn? Edit: Totally meant Venom not Spawn. I'm an amateur nerd...
@scragar Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly Blue Beetle is a fairly new character, from about 2005 or so, he's definitely newer than Spawn as a character. He was cool though, the original selling point was that the suit was supposed to be the ultimate hero, able to solve any problem and kill any villain, but with it being a trick by an alien race. The Reach couldn't just take over new planets, that would cause a war with the Guardians of the Universe(who created the Green Lanterns) they couldn't win, so instead they created super suits and sent them to planets to take over subtly. The suit would prove the worlds greatest defender, then the reach would show up wanting to reclaim the suit, but upon seeing how much it was needed offer to defend the planet in exchange for joining The Reach(and then they wipe out the native culture over a few generations before fully converting it to a slave world when no one remembers what it was like to be free). The suit doesn't care about lives at all because it was created by aliens who see humans as future slaves, why do they care if a few undesirable humans wind up dead. Luckily for Earth the presence of magic broke the AI somewhat so it's less effective but more willing to follow his direction(it's still never going to stop him killing someone, and especially not someone who is a threat to The Reach capable of replicating Scarabs).

This movie was so safe, it was essentially Iron man and Venom combined. The thing that made Blue Beetle interesting in multiple animated shows/movies is that the Scarab was uncomfortable around humans. If it thought a human looked at it funny, then it would instinctively try to attack. It's a gift and curse that prevented Jaime from even being near his family because he could potentially harm or even kill them. He had to teach it to get comfortable with humans. Where's a conflict like this in the movie? Even the no kill rule could've been explored more. What if Jaime had a no kill rule, but the Scarab didn't and forced him to kill. That would certainly make him stand out.

Late comment, but I kinda hate the trend of "We already know about everything." It's like how in improv there's a rule that you don't stop an idea unless you have a better idea. You can't just have characters say "We already know that, so you don't need to explain it," because that cuts out a lot of opportunities for story. Like, part of the reason why Raimi's Spider-Man movies were so good was because of the conflicts that emerged from Harry not knowing that his best friend was Spider-Man. Imagine the universe where instead of that Harry was like "Lol, it was super obvious that you were Spider-Man, bro." You could see it in Far From Home where they set up an emotional scene where Peter is about to reveal his identity only to get cut-off with "I know you're Spider-Man," which is funny in the moment, but it probably would have made the movie better if we had gotten that emotional scene.

I feel like the writers didn't even care about Blue Beetle either. Jamie Reyes had no autonomy here, he was just taken for a ride. In a story, sometimes it's a good idea to have the hero forced to be the hero, but give then a point where they have a choice. For instance, in the first Iron Man film, Tony Stark was captured by terrorists, but he escaped. He didn't have a choice, it was escape or die. Once he escaped he had a choice, either continue his playboy lifestyle or be a hero. Ultimately, he choose to be the hero because he wanted to. He felt he needed to make things right.

The fact this is the first live-action superhero movie to star a Latino, or that it touches on "important" topics means sweet fuck all to them. You have to do something with such things that piques the interest of the viewers. If you can make your audience laugh, or make them care about the characters, they'll sit and happily listen to absolutely everything you have to say about social issues. Yeah I cried and got emotional with jaime wanting to kill the bad guy and the suit stopping him but it was just an "eh" watch till then. I was disappointed he was mostly incapacitated too and not doing anything with the suit himself. Edit: I cried because jaime's dad dying by their ends and just wanted to go all out was stopped by an alien that was for killing tho realized it isn't always that good. My grandpa passed away a few months ago too. So it's relatable now knowing how others feel when their loved ones pass away. The scene where he gets a heart attack and everyone was being kept from helping him was powerful on paper but could've been more impactful if the villains were better written. All I could think of was "are they really this stupid?" since most of the bad guys just took the family appart like police do in raids but noooo, an old man grasping for air while his daugther cries out for help is not a sign at all, not at all! so yeah. If villains were better written from the get go, how this video mentions it, that scene would've blown many people away and most of the story beats would've been memorable with overall good writing.

Blue Beetle is a guilty pleasure of mine. The film has all of the right ideas (for example, villain actually thematically fits the film, unlike Shazam 2 or The Flash if you can call it a villain). With just a liiiiiittle bit of better execution, you can make a cool Spy Kids-esque story where Jaime Reyes gets to kick some ass while the family also get some share with Ted Kord super gadgets on the third act.

The Flash's villain is a version of Barry who wants to change the past no matter the consequences, which makes Barry realize he needs to be better, resolving his conflict. The villain literally shows the hero a dark reflection of himself causing the hero to change. I honestly think that's more thematically relevant than Carapace... He was only thematically relevant because he was also exploited by the CEO lady. But Jaime already knows the CEO lady exploits people, so he doesn't even grow as characters after learning this. Carapax could have been a robot or a sentient horse abused by the CEO lady and nothing really would have changed.

The problem with this Blue Beetle movie is that it should be the sequel... What makes Iron man so good is the set up from multiple movies. Blue beetle has had 3 main iterations that could have all had a moment, kind of like a homage to comics silver, golden ages before settling on the modern Blue Beetle. This movie could have started with Dan Garret (the OG Blue Beetle with a mystical scarab granting them power) saving his assistant inventor Ted Kord from the ancient alien artifact being dug up. Ted Kord becomes the head of the company and attempts to shut down the project knowing what horrors could be unleashed from O.M.A.C. (of course the bad guys (maybe Checkmate) continue the project without Ted knowing). Ted meets Jaime and is impressed with them, offers them a job as his assistant, stuff happens. Ted in remembrance to Dan attempts to make a high tech version of the magical Scarab Dan had because Jaime convinces Ted the Alien tech could be used for good. O.M.A.C'S attack in the finale, Ted fights them with his gadgets but dies at the same time as Jaime is bonded to the new high tech scarab. Now we have a tragic hero arc. The end. The sequel is Jaime figuring out his powers without a mentor and fighting more O.M.A.C./ Checkmate stuff. I just want Ted Kord to get some love, he was a great character with no super powers besides his intellect and the gadgets he builds. O.M.A.C did him dirty.

What i am most surprised by after watching your video is that Blue Beetle has the same problem as Green Lantern, they both get their powers without a reason. there is alot they could change in the movie but fundamentaly the problem u have with him and gl on why they got their powers would still persist. they got their powers because they were chosen, changing it by making the villain experiment on him and force the scarab on him or something like would be deviating too much @@asbergan
@asbergan Жыл бұрын
@@beatsbynine7922 TL;DR No, the animated GL movie from 2009 used the same power gaining plot points as the live action move and was much better. Thus its not the pot points that is the problem, but how they are integrated into the story. I do not think so, I am quite fond of both blue beetle and GL. For instance i recently watched the animated GL from 2009, which mirrors the plot points of the live action movie exactly. However, the animated movie was much better. I believe the problem is not the plot point per se, but instead how they are integrated into the overarching movie plot. The main problem i have with the live action GL is that his powers feel unearned. The solution is to have the character fight an uphill battle to prove he can use the powers, that he is worthy, that the ring made the correct choice. The same parallel can be drawn for blue beetle, his powers where gain not earned similar to GL. Thus the story needs to compensate in one way or another, proving to the viewer that he is worthy, otherwise its bad storytelling.

While your analysis on the critical narrative side was good I don't think this was the reason it didn't do well in the box office. On rotten tomatoes both critics and general audience loved the movie. It also followed the superhero origin story formula but since this is a character that not many know it focuses more on the protagonist and the family side characters so we at least resonate with the emotional beats. It doesn't help that the past 3 DC films bombed critically and financially so it makes sense that the general audience would not trust this brand to watch. You cannot forget that this movie released during a strike so there was almost no actors marketing and WB did nothing to market or push to theaters worldwide. If WB cared this easily could've been DCs Black Panther financially and culturally but again that is also due to Marvels success that guaranteed that people show up. I'm upset that this movie didn't fully succeed in theaters but I'm glad I saw it 5 times in theaters and that people who did watch it loved it too. Already have my preorder for 4k steelbook as well.

The movie just missed too many points. The uncle and grandma having so much no how of the blue beetle and weapons/transportation without any back story on it. Like he said the intro was poor. Black Panther Atleast starts you off with a bit of history of who the black Panther is and that there is More than one, leading that to T’challas father who was the old BP killing his uncle. They showed they have some special lip tattoo that glows which gives exclusivity to the characters world. BP hits a lot of good points that you remember that was passed on to the following movies. Blue Beetle sadly missed out on most of those points. Plus the protagonist did everything in his power to get caught and put his family in a terrible position, which made him slightly dislikable as a protagonist. Spider-Man did it too in no way home but it was done differently.

What Filmento talks about in the 1st-half of this video regarding starting you off with who the character is and what they can do, etc is something i always likes about James Bond films, and the first few Indiana Jones films. They would start the movie where we immediately join the protagonist near the END of the "previous" mission. We'd see the protagonist showing what they can, and can't do, overcoming some obstacles, etc and maybe even briefly get an introduction to some other characters. When the mission is over, we settle at home/H.Q./etc and THEN the start of the movie's plot really begins. It's a great way for the audience to "hit the floor running" with a rollercoaster that achieves so much to give you some action, dialogue, characters, with adrenalin, tension, emotions, etc fired-up ready to start you on the real adventure.
