Saw them in 84 w/ Metallica and in 85 w/ Exodus and Atomkraft. Both times in Osnabrück / Germany. Maybe i am the old fucker now but THIS was the real shit. Nobody can ever take this out of my past. Stuff like this does not exist today.

Whenever I am feeling down in the dumps, all I have to do is crank this and I am reminded that there is pure, beautiful evil out there, and it makes it all worthwhile.

Agreed. They even made a progressive speed metal album with At War With Satan and did very well with it. The most underrated speed metal album ever. Brilliant riffs and songwriting.

Phnaargos, your point is well taken, and your diplomacy in making your point is appreciated. You are saying that in a historical context, we can't overlook or minimize their contribution. Somehow, I know you are right.

There's a riff in the middle too. Just after the solo, it comes right after the whammy bar dip that Jeff does when they kind of run in a circle. That is THE HEAVIEST RIFF EVER. It just pounds. POUNDS!! I love it.

i know i guy that saw these guys in early 81, he said that they scared the living hell out of them lol
@SCROGY13 жыл бұрын
The lyrics, the AMAZING RIFFS, the "nuts in a vise" vocals of Cronos, the devils chainsaw guitar sound, blast beats......all combine to make this the best speed/black/death metal song ever laid down.....EVER. What tops it off though is the Dario Argento saturated lighting that just makes this video so evil and menacing. Venom had a very good understanding of the importance of lighting to create mood/atmosphere. I wish this was availible as a clearer, crisper recording. It sounds very murky.
@SCROGY17 жыл бұрын
DBAViking: I agree. This is the first song that ever scared me as a kid. Cronos looks like the Devil in this video. And that scream: OOOOOHHHHHH OHH Hell Breaks LOOOOSE!!! Pure evil genius. Jeffs guitar sound gives me the creeps in the solo and the extro part of the song. I love his sound......like the devils chainsaw.

FUCKIN' AWESOME! No digital studio tricks, no synths - just chainsaw guitar, bulldozer bass, thermonuclear drums, and the unholy howl that is Cronos! FUCKIN' LOVE IT OR DIE!!!

Yeah, it does sound better here than on the record. Also of note is their headbanging technique, which was years ahead of its time.

YES! this was the first tVenom exposure i ever had it kiced my 14 yr old ass in 86 when i saw it on the Much Music Power Hour at the tail end of the show it wasa defining moment in my metal fandom!

This is just how it sounds. I wish we could get a clear HD version of this song but it's a rarity that was never released on an album as far as I know.

Although the audio is certainly from a live performance, I pretty sure we're seeing and hearing two different performances. Take a good look at 2:03. He isn't within 2m of his mic but somehow you still hear Cronos. It doesn't appear to be a sync issue either.

:54 to :57 seconds......That is without a doubt the coolest 3 seconds in DM/BM history. I reminds me of the imagery/lighting in a Dario Argento horror film. Does anyone else get that vibe or am I on crack? When I was 13 that just creeped me right out.....This whole video does but that is the best part, visually, for me.

I guess that somehow the Great British were the Trailblazers for the whole Black Metal scene? Today everybody knows the black metal scene has moved. I personally liked beside Venom the old good German bands like Soddom and Kreator. I am from Sweden and we had some good Black Metal from this country (Therion) ,King Diamond from Denmark, Mayhem from Norway and Children of Bodom from Finland. Hail to England!!! (old Manowar song).

True they actually started out as a joke band poking fun at Motorhead's extreme loudness and speed, but then they took it MUCH farther and invented a style of music that would grow and grow, from Celtic Frost to Bathory and Death and up to today. They had the best riffs ever. Tossup between this song, Bloodlust and Circle Of The Tyrants as to which is the greatest ever, but I have to go with this. That guitar just sounds EVIL!

Pretty sure this is a 'live in the studio' effort. This isn't anything like the 'Witching Hour' audio from the 'Hell at Hammersmith' album of the same year and sounds more like them around the 1983-84 era rather than a year later. Venom never sounded that clean live. Plus we don't get to see a crowd shot to prove it's actually live.

they never meant to start it! they just did. they wanted to be just heavy metal but a little darker. people say black sabbath started metal but they werent all tht metal, they wanted to be a rock band but accidentally created heavy metal. they didnt even know what heavy metal was. pure black metl should be bands like bathory or mayhem or something. the bands tht wanted to be black metal.
