The USS Defiant taking out the station makes so much sense. They know how those types of starbases work, where their weaknesses are, where their weapons likely are, and possibly even some of the access codes. It's probably the only ship that could single-handedly take it down (the cloak also helps).
@time391 Жыл бұрын
It also opens up a lot of possibility for Kira and Garak later in to help form the Cardassian resistance with Damar, insurgency tactics were hinted at in DS9 and mentioned in the novels, but they were never fleshed out to what extent Starfleet or the federation was training for widespread use.
@TheEDFLegacy Жыл бұрын
Actually... after some reflection, there wouldn't be a cloak; wasn't the first Defiant destroyed at this point? The USS Sao Paulo lacked the Romulan's cloak that was provided under the special agreement before the start of the war.

Personal log. Dawn reporting. To put it simply, Betazed was a tragedy. We landed out plane on the highway turned runway. I looked across the land, and felt an unbearable sadness... Within all the shell craters and artillery scorch marks, there were still people living there. They were the ones who took us in, gave us drink and food, but Dusk and me both knows that something was off about them. Something that, for a lack of a better word, broke them. We arrived at the "research" camp and capture that bloody doctor... Then we saw it all. The bodies, the brutal massacre on an industrial scale, all in the name of his twisted science. "This ain't no research camp... It's a bloody extermination camp," he yelled in fury, and it took everything I had and me confiscating his sidearm to hold Dusk back from putting a phaser beam right through the doctor's cranium. He was sobbing uncontrollably, his eyes filled with pain, grief, and rage. And I don't blamed him. If it weren't for the international laws, I'd have summarily shot him in his fraked up head right then and there. (Sigh) It's not a sight either of us will forget any time soon. A murder on that scale. And something tells me that this would be the least light hearted we'll be for the rest of the war, and we must end it quickly... If we live to see the day it ends, at least. I... Feel him. Honestly, from being his best friend for many years, I can empathise with him... (Sigh...) My best friend. He's... Nevermind. End recording.

I think in the books, it was meant to give the Betazoids telepathy to the Vortas since they had the ability but it was not natural for the entire species as only a few showed any such ability despite their efforts. If they had the ability, they could better control the Jem'Haddar and could stop drugging the species, ending their one weakness that the Dominion War show a faction like the Federation, and later the Romulans would exploit time and time again. I could see that being the main reason as I am unsure if the Changelings could get that ability since they can transform into non-organic beings, but it would be interesting. Honestly, I think that is more terrifying for the Changelings an isolationist species that rarely leaves their world except for what they consider important. The Vorta, the species with a larger population who runs everything in the Dominion, command their armies, are the Dominion's many diplomates and interrogators, and program to be completely loyal to the Founders, which is a more constant threat.

Captains log USS Normandy Adm Caughey in command. After all this time we were finally let loose to do what we wanted since Betazed fell. Only after we got there we were continually held back by overly cautious officers who seemed to lack the guts to advance, it was beyond infuriating to have to experience that. Sure picking off the odd scout ship was no problem for the RRTF but we were there at the fall, we fought to allow the original survivors of the fall to escape and risked our lives to save the survivors ( how I earned my first of many bravery decorations). We were with the light fleet units for the probing attack only to find the damn dominion had tricked us. The damn senior admiral refused to listen to his most experienced combat officer ( me). During the final battle we were selected to punch a hole for the defiant to hit the station then we were told to slag it. After that we broke formation and chased whatever ships we could catch. Fighting independently we destroyed many and gained our vengeance for the fall. When we landed and the Endeavor beamed down to the planet it was enough to turn someone’s stomach. I was stationed on Betazed years earlier and to have old friends tell me of the things they did to fight was gut churning. I’ve seen the horrors of war and carry them on my body with my limbs and scaring. That was bad enough but to see what those cardassians did? Took everything I had not to rip the doctors head off right there. There was no celebration in fact a great many of us long serving veterans vomited at the sight. Even Ben Maxwell couldn’t bring himself to see it. Many think I’m more machine then man but what I saw there? It finally showed my officers and enlisted that I’m more human then even I thought. Let’s finish this damn war already. I need to take a few months off on boreth to find myself again when this is over. Though my cabin in Alaska might be just as serviceable, ( sound of very old bottle of whiskey being opened). What’s happening to me? It’s just like after wolf 359 all over again where I need the booze to silence the voices. Maybe I really do have PTSD from it after all. Suppose I’ll think about it after we win. Who knows? Maybe that will end the voices. Adm Caughey out

A cardassian with their back to the wall and nothing left to lose will shoot their only ally in the back to gain the trust of the enemy. The Federations slowness to respond to an enemy digging in on a homeworld was a very poor choice. Like a hopolite phalanx when it is determined not to move, you will never dislodge a force fuelled by desperation to defend its position. The federation should have adopted a policy of aggressive patrols early on to weaken the dominion perimeter through sustain attrition, the federation had many more ships and reserves in its home territory while the domion was running on borrowed time; fighting in waves and by shifts, forcing the cardassians to meet them in constant battle, would have drained their ammunition and fuel reserves as well as tiring out the ship crews. Doing that in combination with the drones would stretch the defences to their limits and allow the probes to penetrate even deeper into the system. The federation also made poor use of its home field advantage in this battle by not using its much deeper knowledge of the system to launch fighter raids, they could easily get back the kill zone of the turrets and pick them off while the larger dominion ships would be too slow to respond. The cardassians may throw up their own fighters to try and defend the stations, but they again have limited numbers while the federation could easily replenish its losses to far into its core territory. The federation continues to squander its tactical advantages in this ongoing war while the dominion and cardassians uses every resource available to it and finds itself with an excess of time despite its war effort living on borrowed time.

There's one problem. DS9 establishes that Cardassians have incredible mental defenses. Not even the Vulcans could break into Gul Dulkat's mind with a direct mind meld. The Vulcans literally had their hands on Gul Dulkat's face, tried forcing the mind meld, and Dukat just laughed at their attempts. The Vulcan even looked very tired while Gul Dukat looked fresh and smiling. He said all Cardassians from a young age are trained to protect their minds from such mental attacks. And if Vulcans can't do it (even with directly touching them), then I doubt Betazoids could do it wirelessly.

@@shitbeausaysofficial - At Minimum, I would expect a race as paranoid as the Cardassians to have some sort of mental defense training available for their military personnel. Dukat had to learn it from somewhere. He didn't teach it himself. There is no way Cardassia would invade a world of telepathy without SOME sort of defense against them. Also Betazoid mind reading doesn't seem to work on several species. It doesn't work on Ferengi, Breen, Changelings, and several others. I personally believe that even if a Betazoid could read a Cardassian officer's mind, the information gathered would be questionable. The Cardassian might leak false thoughts to fool Betazoid.

"...and was carried out by Starfleet Marines." I'm sorry, what?

It would have been more fitting to introduce some lesser known federation member race, explain that they had kept a standing army "for cultural reasons" and have them send a contingent of marines. Calling them starfleet marines makes everyone shout "why are they burning through security officers if they have real soldiers?!!"

@@MetalheadAndNerd that would be PRECISELY the question I have. Good way of handling from the writer's perspective. Thanks. =)

Starfleet has a war-time army and marines, otherwise there’s no way they’d be able to win the dominion war, you need a ground army to capture and defend planets
