Super Mario 128 was a Tech Demo to demonstrate the power of the GameCube. The "game" later served as the basis for the creation of Pikmin, since it uses several characters on the screen, the same way that Super Mario 128.

I couldn’t figure out why 128 was the number chosen, but then I realized 64x2 is 128. The GameCube was the console which the tech demo was played on, prior to that was the Nintendo 64. I am astounded.

You're going at it in a roundabout way. More simply, Mario 64 exists and it is one of the most celebrated games of all time. Mario 128 is evocative of a sequel to it.

Pretty sure it is simply 128 because Gamecube, like PS1 and Dreamcast, was a 128-bit system.

@@kingstarscream3807 None of them were really 128 bit. The Dreamcast was called 128 bit in marketing, however PS1 and Gamecube were both 32 or 64 bit, a bit inconclusive. Really confusing stuff though, all sources are a bit different

originally a sequel to mario 64 for the disc drive add on for the 64 but miyamoto was too busy around the time so progress moved to the GameCube which is this demo and was later on supposed to be dark and serious mario game to the point where even playboy was supposed to sponsor the game but Nintendo told miyamoto not to go with it and then had to start from scratch again and became a decade after the games original announcement so miyamoto decided to put the nail in the coffin but elements were used in pikmin and Galaxy
