@jiujitsu5000, we always put the grip first, because it is the foundation of the gun... if the grip comes apart under recoil then trigger control comes apart. If you have a path of least resistance (POLR) in the grip, then it doesn't matter how good your eyes are when the shot goes to the POLR. it has taken me many years to change that order in my own shooting but its just like building a house... shitty foundation? well then you know what the rest of the house is going to look like.

I partially agree. As far as getting in position it is paramount for accurate shots in a free form environment. There are individuals out there that grip and adjust unlike a conventional warrior for trick shooting that work against this formula...Munden, Miculek. Funny you never mention these guys in anything I have seen. Even Fisher had an arguement with me and he is up the chain in the fat boy (recycle) squad. The "Yeti" can't even handle a M82A1 like a little ole man and gave me shit about a mulligan...really? Anyways

Love the content! As a music teacher, I suggest saying "tee" instead of "three" in the 1-2-3-4-5 drill. When we speak rhythms, the consonances "hr" tends to take too long, blur, or slow down the accuracy of the timing. When "tee" is spoken, it crisps up that audible and kinesthetic timing for more accurate counting.

I always learn something with Travis' videos. I am an instructor and trainer for a tac team and as such, I get a lot less trigger time than the guys. This drill goes with me to the range when I am going for me. I go with a plan and some of these drills and get a lot more out of my range days. Also, I would like to point out that the timing drill has helped me work my split times shooting multiple targets (handgun and rifle). I start counting (out loud of course, everyone already thinks I'm weird) and then, keeping the rhythm of the count, I engage the multiple targets striving for consistency of split times. Using a timer to keep score is a good idea as well. Thanks Trav! Semper Fi!!!

you don't have to count out loud there are 2 ways that I count . before the ejected shell casing passes my wrist I fire again . or the sound of the shot dissipates

There are few that have served to the capacity you did and continue to do. For all that, you have my gratitude. I have ran this drill almost every day for the past two weeks. In training class last night we did a hostage target drill from 20 yards and i was putting rounds inside the Central Nervous System every time. The targets were from full face to half to a quarter face. I highly recommend this drill its trained me to slow my shooting down to get a clear front sight picture and put rounds on target my confidence level is now much higher then it was two weeks ago.

Always emphasizing the importance of questioning one's own ideas of a "correct" method. Also, speaking of reaching failure points, you reminded me of NASA. There's a saying there that a successful test launch gets an A, and a failed launch gets an A+, because success isn't likely to reveal a hidden flaw.

Tried this drill today at my local range. Our local outdoor range, does not allow you to be within 10 yards of the target. So hitting a one inch circle is challenging to say the least. Yet, even with that problem, I was able to see better grouping. I was able to self correct several problems. I even had other shooters notice what I was doing, and admiring my grouping. Thanks for a great drill!

Earlier this month I took HSP's D5 handgun course in IN and we used this drill every morning to warm up. And I can tell you it gets you ready to shoot. It also is a great "workout" in 100 rounds...you really get the chance to focus on the 3 different parts Haley refers to in the video: grip, eyes, and finger. The best part, in my opinion, is you can focus on a particular part (trigger control in my case) for as long as you want. I went through a whole FEF target just thinking about the trigger pull. I also can't stress the rhythm part enough...it got me relaxed and ready to work on the FEF portion. Good stuff. HSP's Director of Training, Pierce, had the best advice though: "relax and be positive."

Great workout, isolating individual groups with reps before combining to develop overall increased confidence and proficiency! On a side note, modifications to the shooting fundamentals and thinking outside-the-box allowed me the privilege of instructing a 100% blind individual to shoot accurately and consistently in an indoor "square" range about a year and a half ago. Great instruction, thank you. A very useful drill - in addition to learning muscle memory and repeatability by exercising the processes, it also encourages a thoughtful understanding of one's firearm. I'm shooting a new Sig and this drill has brought to my attention the adjustments required over the Glock I used to shoot, mostly in terms of my grip. Look, the guys at the range initially thought I've lost it with all the talking and counting to myself but they saw this vid and now it's SOP! It's great to have access to this quality teaching in South Africa thanks to you posting on KZbin - the good work is appreciated!

A much appreciated follow-up to this video would be to see how a relative newbie runs through this drill with your help. Watching you thread the needle at three yards doesn't give enough information on how to adjust all the variables to achieve that level of competency. Watching a less capable shooter would reveal the adjustments needed to achieve the goal you've already achieved.

Kevin, its very hard to get it down with just these videos as a reference. would love to have you out in a class sometime. but in the mean time get that gun to mold to the hand with pliability, and good firm handshake pressure. Then apply pressure in the back of the hands like when you were a kid in the pool trying to squirt water out of your hands... if you do that right now and feel the back of the palms coming together with pressure, then apply that pressure on the gun and see if that helps for basic grip. as for trigger, slow down and finish flat as you can. hope to see you out there!

HaleyStrategic Thanks Travis and really am looking forward to seeing you in a lot of your classes

kevin cash This will sound weird, but make sure you gun is clear( obviously). Then when you are watching Travis Haley's videos, KZbin, TV, a movie or whatever else tickles your fancy. Take your pistol and work on firearms manipulation, rack the slide, insert a fresh(empty!) magazine, practice getting into your grip, lining up your sights everything you can do while still maintaining as much of your primary focus on the TV and/or monitor. Obviously, when starting this, make sure you are still using good technique and proper form as instructed my Mr. Haley. The more you do this, the easier it will become. Sooner than you would imagine, you will be able to operate the weapon 100% in your peripheral vision and only need to focus on the gun for sight alignment and sight picture. I have used a similar technique with my son and spelling. He was constantly getting crappy grades on spelling tests. Once I started having him "say it" "spell it" "say it" spelling routine while he was playing video games on his xbox/tablet his score immediately improved. The power of the subconscious mind is amazing. Use it to your advantage my friend.

great to hear that is working for you! I am also surprised that very few people focus on the details of trigger.
