If you are finding your venus flytraps turning black fast, you may be a victim of crown rot. This is when you water your venus flytrap too much, usually in colder temperatures. It's not always a good idea to leave your flytrap in a tray of water all the time. If temps are lower, this can lead to crown rot and the death of your beloved carnivorous plant.

Thank you so much for properly teaching us. My husband bought his first plant (we call him Bob) and he was already having crown rot when bought so he thought it was normal until I took a picture look up. You have been the only KZbinr to tell us to keep him DRY. We are gonna try this method, cleaning him up good, see if any of the stems can be saved, and try to repot. Thank you thank you thank you🩵

So, I just got home from Wal-Mart. I'm reading this comment. I haven't bought Wal-Mart venus flytraps in a while, I've just been better disciplined. However.... Not only am I feeling a kind of way after seeing my SD Kronos looking like this, but the flytraps at Wal-Mart today were the biggest I've EVER seen at big box. These ARE HUGE. Oh, and to address what you said, I've been meaning to get over to Trader Joes (About a 30 minute drive from my house) seeing everyone get those amazing Sarrs making me wish I could get there and grab some!

Sorry man, it really hurts to see a plant decline like that, especially when you've seen it thrive. Really hope the remaining parts have enough stored nutrients to sustain it for long enough to bounce back. I also wonder if the little mound your other vft has is helping keep the rhizome from getting too wet when it gets cold. Perhaps keeping them in coolers during times where there might be large temperature swings can help keep temperatures constant enough so that it is less susceptible to infections due to stress. I think of it as wild plants having pine needles and grass mulch to insulate it but that's just my theory and could be total crap until its thoroughly tested.

Its hard to say. Honestly, I just don't have the time to give each plant this kind of special treatment. I just have too many. Maybe when the 3 kids are all out of the house and I'm not traveling all over the country for basketball. Lol. I went to 5 different states in May, it's been quite the task taking care of these plants while traveling all over. I wish I had the time to really give each individual plant this much attention. Right now, I should probably not complain about losing just one. I just wish it wasn't the Kronos. Lol.

I have gotten black traps. When a new trap is about to grow and it's small and look like a little knob or whatever. It has turned black before even nearly fully developed. I have removed it as soon as I have seen it. And it only happens from time to time it's not regular. The other grown traps looks fine. Although some has some blackness or spots on the stem on the outer edges but not the trap itself. The trap itself looks fine. In other cases it's always has been the trap that goes black first and not the other way around. Should I be concern and investigate further or should I just remove when it happens? It grows normally like new traps grow at normal pace so to speak. If anyone can answer it would be much appreciated because I can't find anything about it when searching on Google. Thanks!

What I found to work for my soil is using both long fiber moss and peat moss with perlite while making layers (all having perlite), bottom being just peat then the middle being a combination of the two then the top being long fiber moss to replicate how a bog works since peat moss is just decomposed moss at the bottom

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I know right, I finally got lucky and it started to grow for me, for my moss it sits in the bottom portion of my tropical pitchers tank on top of dead lfsm on top of river rocks, sure other species of plants are growing along with algae but to combat the algae I only refill the water once it 80-90% gone so that my moss doesn't completely dry out but doesn't stay constantly wet enough that the algae can spread

This mix actually came from Flytrap Store, who used to be in Oregon, as far as I know he did not change up his mix when he moved to Missouri. He has shared before that living in the NW, you just lose some plants to crown rot, not a lot you can do about it. Mostly due to low temps at night and warm during the day, especially in early spring.

Hi, I thought I might just ask here. So my flytrap started rotting a bit ago. I repotted it recently, got rid of the rotten parts, and tried to water it correctly, but I noticed some parts turned black AGAIN after a few weeks or so. It has direct sunlight almost all day and is in a new bigger pot too. Should I just repot it again, and remove the rot like last time? I don't know why it's back, it's my first time owning one of these so I might just be doing something wrong taking care of it

Rot is super tricky. I've had some recover when I remove the rot and I've had some that just can't seem to get past it. I thunk it depends on the rhizome, how big and healthy it is. Seems like the bigger it is the more you can pull or and it still live. Smaller ones seem to not recover as well. You can try removing the rot and repotting but there are no guaranteed.

Anyone that tells you a blanket statement about watering venus flytraps is not being honest. I've talked to many people who have lost their flytraps to crown rot from leaving them in standing water during cooler temperatures. If you live where it's warm and have to constantly change the water, it's fine to leave it. I live in North Idaho, when it's 37 degrees, you can't just leave the plant sitting in water all winter. They rot, and they die. I've also seen people complaining about losing their plants during colder temps due to overwatwring in groups on facebook. The problem with nurseries is they want to give you a few quick bullets on how to care for flytraps, and it's more complicated than that. Where you live, what time of year, average temperatures all need to be considered when talking about watering. But, what do I know? I just grow them. Everyone should listen to you, you've obviously read a few care bullet points at nursery websites. You probably know more than me. They key is to never let thr substrate completely dry out. Substrate will stay wet without sitting in water for 30 to 60 days in colder temps.

Pay close attention about only watering them 2 to 3 timed a month. Should be moist, never soaked. Let's think about this logically for a second. What does water do to most organic things that sit in it? Causes rot. Maybe a healthy plant can fight that off but what if it's been weakened? The substrate is at least part organic dead moss so that is also constantly rotting. That rot can spread to your weakened plant. Instead of believing what the crowd tells you, think critically for yourself and ask the question, "what is their agenda?"

100% this. Watering venus flytraps correctly is kind of an art form. It takes practice. Knowing when to water when they are cold takes some thought. Many make it through the winter sitting in water but many don't. Also, it's possible that many of these nurseries come from warmer climates. In this case, they do need to be sitting in water all the time. It's just very nuanced. There isn't a quick one sentence answer for watering venus flytraps. Not all season anyway.

There are plenty of people that only put water in their trays every now and then when the top of the soil feels like it’s getting dry. It definitely depends on your climate, amount of sun, and humidity levels. I live in northeast Florida and I killed a couple flytraps in the beginning by having them sit in a tray of water all the time while it was kind of cooler at night and cloudy during the day. It had also been raining a lot and the humidity was around 95%! I had always listened to people say to keep them in water constantly no matter what and never let the water dry up even if the soil was damp. That definitely didn’t work for me. My remaining plants bounced back and looked better than ever when I started only watering them every few days when the substrate was starting to dry on top.
