Nice video Brad. I have been growing VFTs for about 30 years, and live in South Carolina (one of the 2 states where they grow wild, although they grow on the coast, not where I live in the upstate). I believe that water quality is the most important aspect of growing VFTs. If you have water with lots of minerals in it, you should use rain water or distilled water. When I quit using tap water, my plants grew much better, and so I NEVER use tap water for my VFTs or Sarracenia either. I think it has a long-term effect on the plants, because as water evaporates, it leaves behind the minerals. Over time, the concentration of minerals increases, until it becomes toxic to the plants. Obviously re-potting will help reduce toxins. I also grow mine outside year-round, and have a large diameter pot (about 24 inches) where I have a colony of VFTs. They look great growing together like that. I separate them and fill in empty areas of the pot sometimes so it looks like a mass of hungry little mouths! My 2 cents worth.

I just got a few, about month ago, bigbox store, yeah I know ;) But im in Mass, and its def. cold out, but was gonna repot and put in the garage? thoughts? I really don't think these were in dormancy, so I want to put them into it. I grow Bonsai trees, and harvest and propagate moss, but know very little. with your years of experience it would be appreciated any advice. Be well.

@@kinggabriel7310 you dont need to feed them at all. not even bugs, theyll catch their own. most important thing is using the right water, keep them moist, in sunny spots, and do not tease them (it makes them exhaust their energy without getting food)

Great video. I use a peat, perlite, sphagnum moss combination. It seems to work well for me, but i might give your mixture a try on a couple plants to see how they do. It gets really hot and dry here in the summer though (25°to35°C), and really cold in the winter. My winter temps can reach -30 °C, so the flytraps are kept in an old basement. If i did leave them outside, would the winter kill them? Or would they just take longer to come back in the spring? I've always kept them inside for dormancy.

Just so it won't totally freeze in my open porch. (It's protected from rain gets light trough the polycarbonate roof but it still freezes.... But here it comes....We are going to have major frosts comming also....its predicted to be about -15 at night next week. And I don't want it to freeze to death should I repot now and keep it in the fridge for a few days to acclimate to non freezing temps and then put it in mu grow Room? Or should I repot and leave it outside until it breaks out of dormancy on it's own ? Cuz it's my first winter it's still in its greenhouse media and would love to give it a more free draining media with grit and perlite and peat. But I'm scared to kill it. Kind regards rose Ps Awesome big traps now I know where the saying :" Shut your big trap!" comes from 😉

Best is outdoors year around, as long as you have winters where the nights drop to about 40 degrees F for two or three months. If the winter temperatures are extremely cold, such as sub-freezing temperatures for months on end, a thick layer of straw mulch is best. For people living in areas where it never gets cold, like some areas of Florida, a cool basement is OK - but not great. I would avoid a fridge due to the risk of molds and fridges also tend to dry oust their contents.

I have a question! You said they’re supposed to be dormant and not stay much in the house but I have a couple VFT and keep them in my house because I live in Illinios so it’s not as nice as in the Carolinas, any tips or advice on the environment for my plants?

They need a winter dormancy or they will only lisve a year or two. It is best to grow them outdoors year around, as long as you get cold winter nights.

My guess is when there's no bugs outside because it's too cold they will be in dormant mode, but I'm not sure

Can you use Miracle Gro perlite and peat moss if you flush it down with water so that the fertilizer is washed out?

Desmond Chi, I wouldn't risk it. Many garden center sell non MG media. And it's prob cheaper too.

I live in BC and I just got a couple of traps... the guy told me to just keep it in moss.
@buggsy5

Not a good recommendation. The moss can dry out too quickly and is hard to remoisten. A good simple is a 50:50 mixture of perlite and sphagnum peat moss.

Bare root repotting at this time of the year is a bad idea. However, if you keep the same soil and just transplant into a larger pot, it shouldn't hurt the plant too much.

Brad, i bought two venus fly traps at Lowes that come with moss, pot, and seeds. They all grew and then turned black. Should I have repoted the plants? The traps did not get very large. I mainly planted these with my grandson. He loved them.

Sometimes Lowe’s adds too much nutrients in the soil so it’s very harmful for the plants Possibly

I live in southern California, and where I live it is very warm in the day, put it drops dramatically overnight. What nepenthes species would be best?
@DS_398
@DS_398 6 жыл бұрын
Highland would probably be the best because they like a big temperature drop at night but also like it warm in the day, which makes Southern California a good place to grow highland Nepenthes.
