Man. Watching your sound design chops makes me realize how little I know or understand sound design. I’ve been making music for forty years and I’ve mostly used presets(as a starting point) and adjusted to taste. It’s always been good enough for me and doesn’t take away from making tracks. People that do sound design are also good at it so why not use the sounds that people spent a lot of time designing? That being said I have been spending some time making kicks and other drum sounds as samples. This tutorial really drive home some great practices.

sidechaining MRingmodulation in ABLETON > Put MRingModulator on your kick > Put a sampler with a hat on a new midi track > Open the drop down that says "Master" by default > Select Kick from the list > the box underneath which is usually empty will have the option of sidechaining into the Mringmodulator (Ableton does not support VST3)

Thanks! Making a track with only a couple of recorded sounds as a challenge at the moment, drums are still pretty new to me so this helps a lot!

Excellent video! My brother has been begging me to put together a big pack of kicks for him so this video is definitely going to help me to not just make the same boring sine kick 50 times over :D

I get the best results by layering. I feel like I have better control of the sound using audio files. I'd recommend creating a folder with samples that are good for layering, and this applies to everything, not just kick drums. Also layering a foley sound with low end can make your kicks or percussion sound big and organic.

Glad I watched this video as it turns out I already had a coupon code for this plugin and didn't know it. It appears the free code is retrospective as I found it in a denise plugin I bought some time ago from Plugin Boutique. Freebies are always a good thing.

Until yesterday, I found Bitwigs E Kick underwhelming, but if you put it through Kilohearts multipass, put two transient designers at 100hz or so and also in the upper mids and put a non linear filter in the post FX with an envelope assigned to the cutoff, then just as some saturation to it (SPL Twin Tube sounds good) it will sound good enough.

Thanks! I'll try to follow this tutorial, but will only use Ableton Suite stock plugins. Maybe Corpus for Sub Generator, Spectrum Analyzer for Signalizer, Frequency Shifter for MRingModulator and Compressor for Fet. But adding noise is more complicated. Googled some options and found Add Character Max For Live Device.

BTW, I hear a dark punchy transient first then the hihat(ish) high-end clicking after that. Don't you? I suggest you this really cool plugin - Nanopulse Transient I was echeptic at first but, after a couple of hours playing with it, WOW. It's really cool!

Love this video. On at least my third viewing. Curious, why not just layer in the hi hat sound as a sample (I'm using pigment to make my kick) instead of using the ring modulator?

Really nice, I have a question tho: The ring modulator, does it use the original signal for say the positive side of the sine and the sidechain signal for the negative, and mixes those two signal that way?
@VenusTheory4 жыл бұрын
Yo! A ring modulator takes two signals and outputs the sum+difference between them while negating the original. So, it doesn't really do anything special for the positive/negative side as it's not asymmetric. The best way to really see/hear what a ring mod does is use two sine waves of different pitches and put them through one, and watch the signal in an oscilloscope as well as a spectrum analyzer! I actually did a video covering that in a bit more detail on the Cherry Audio KZbin channel for Voltage Modular. You can see that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5Dbnp9-pM2YbLM
@Teflora4 жыл бұрын
@@VenusTheory thank you! People often refer to it as gain modulation so I'm interested to learn more about the intricacies of it!
@YestinHarrison4 жыл бұрын
>im not going to go into detail on how a ring modulator works guys its just multiplication,,, (thats technically a lie with analog or analog-modelling ones as opposed to "naive" digital ones but its almost true there too)

Why not Kick 2? At least for the "kick start" (hehe) then you could tweak there a lot and ad a punch and "tail"... Yeah, I know, there's no rules for that when it come to how to "create" a kick sound and your approaching was really cool. And I can see you was not shooting an advertizing video about Kick 2, what would be hard to say that after 12 minutes tweaking that plugin alone... Anyway, thank you for the really cool video and a lot of new ideas genesis... :-)

I really enjoy your videos but sometimes I find your voice is mixed too loud compared to the other sounds so can't really hear the details of the sounds you are working on without cranking the volume and hurting my ears. Anyways, that is all, everything great apart from that! EDIT: I could hear everything much better by the end when you started clipping things lol
