We bought a used replacement engine with 145000 km for 7700 Euro for our Land Rover Discovery 4 to replace the exploded short block. In this episode we pickup the engine and perform a series of tests to find out if we bought a can of worms or if everything is good.
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.

I agree with Christian. "What goes around, comes around" is what we say in English. Do the right thing by everyone you meet. Many years ago I sold a 3 year old car. It was a 4.2 litre petrol straight six and a young fellow rolled up with his father to take a look at it. I immediately said to the young man that this was not the right car for you, it is not fuel efficient and also it has a couple of small dents that I never got fixed. Later the father said to me that he valued my personal integrity and pulled out his police badge and thanked me for my honesty. They did purchase the car but I am still waiting for the karma to be returned.

This is one of a very few channels that I believe deserves the option of having a 'double' like button, it's informative, humorous and always worth watching. I've always wanted to upgrade to a Disco 4 but after 3 years of watching LR TIME I've decided that for the sake of my sanity and general well being I'm going to stay with my 21yr old Disco 2 until it finally dissolves into a large pile of ferric oxide (apparently it's only the various oil leaks which have prevented that happening so far). 😊

Morning! I’m a Brit living in Germany -Bonn- and everything Christian and Vera say about the used car and spares trade here is true. It’s like dipping your hand in a piranha tank - it’s a case of which finger are you prepared to lose. I have an old E39 BMW and hate buying old spares from the parts mafia - even the German ones are assholes. The area you got the engine from is like the down town motor city and has a bad reputation. I hope this engine works out for you!

Never feel bad about not uploading a video Vera and Cristian! I would watch anything you put out there, as I learn so much! A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (UK) I now live in Spain!! I had a series III LWB Safari 2.6 petrol. I loved it, but my god it drank fuel! I took it back to the dealer, who basically had a melt down. I was young, and naive and loved the great big tonka toy!! ...He was good enough to buy it back, but I lost a lot of money in the process. I then bought a Renault 9 and it did a lot more to the gallon!!! It was a case of the heart ruling the head, or as my father said, 'blind faith' but I do love Landrovers!! They're in my blood, it's an addiction...I think I may need therapy!!!!! Thank you for the time and trouble you take in doing what you do, it is appreciated by this Brit! xxx

Looking on the bright side (😅), you’ve rebuilt enough SD6’s now that it should be a cakewalk for you… but the costs sure do mount up. And as for the engine mafia, there’s a UK breakers that proudly show off their helicopter purchased off the back of their business and they have a couldn’t care less attitude. On the flip side, there are some decent people out there too; we should all name and shame the bad ones!

I forgot to say a "HUGE" thank you. I'm in New Zealand, I drive a 4MOTION VR6. I had a problem with some of the steering/ABS sensors. Some of them are unavailable from the dealer. After watch a plethora of videos & going online over a 5year period to find the fault as I was getting ripped off because sensor after sensor with the braking system started to go. Every sensor starts at a few hundred dollars or euros then a pump alone is €2500+ The car is a 2001 model btw. I checked on eBay to find "reputable" 2nd hand dealer. I saw many suppliers in Latvia/?Lithuania. I bought one from the UK & Germany if I remember correctly. Last year I sent my car back to my mechanic who then sent it to his auto-electrician/tuning guy. 1 of the sensors were bad. 😂 After your more than informative video on the subject of "used car parts dealers" in Germany/Europe. I will never make that mistake again. I watch your videos every week as I used to drive a Landrover & find you videos to be among the best the world can produce. Thank you so very much for the heads up. Your honesty, integrity, ability, workmanship, ethics & wisdom are 2nd to none. It is important to pay tribute, where tribute is due. Way back in the 80’s stationed in Sennelager, I had a BMW E21 (I loved that car) our local scrapyard could not be more helpful. I wanted a set of Alloy wheels as my E21 had steel wheels. On checking their stock, they had 3 in excellent condition but one poorly curbed and some wheel nut missing and would not sell me them. Taking my number they would get back to me when they had a complete set and would hold the 3 wheels until that happened. About 10 weeks later I got the call to come and get them. Was well happy with the result. Many more visits after that and always looked after very well. May be this free movement didn’t go down well after all 🤷 Super content as usual C&V

I sat here watching Christian put 5,7lt of oil in an English V6 diesel and thought to myself but my German Mercedes V6 diesel OM642 takes about 9lt of oil and you never hear the horror stories about them that you do about the Lion V6. From one mechanic to another, you can also perform a relative compression test without the need to remove the glow plugs. By using a lab scope and a current amp clamp or just having the leads connected to the battery. Each compression stroke changes the amp draw (or voltage drop) then you can convert that signal into BAR or PSI. The test can give you an accurate result. There's plenty of videos on YT to show you the steps on how to perform this test. I'm pretty sure you already knew this. It's more enjoyable for your viewers to see the actual work lol. Great content once again. We also have a lot of *beep* junkyard ppl here in the states as well.

And if you have the value of a true psi or BAR test on for example cylinder one, you can scale the results from the scope to the other cylinders where hard to get? That would be a great idea to compare the real values to the calculated based on the current flow of the starter motor, it would have some scientifically character.

The first place I visited was in Ipswich when I was only 17, the owner was an ex boxer, baldhead, brocken nose and coveredin tatoos (it was unusual back then). He wanted £15 for the Mini engine I needed and I asked if he'd take an offer. He asked me how much and when I said £7 he called me a cheeky c..t and then asked asked me why I thought my offer would be enough and I told him thats all I had! He thought for a moment and then re-affirmed than I was a cheeky c... but that he admired my nerve took my money and then helped me load it in my car. 👍

It happens everywhere I once had to explain to a wrecker that had sold me a bad engine that no this is not just business it is infact very personal to me. He got the message in the end and reluctantly took it back. it was a small town and he avoided me for years after 😂

I think that >beep< gene is a requirement in the UK automotive world as well. There’s a scale, the better they can hide the >beep< gene, the closer they are to selling in the ‘new car dealerships’, then as the scale drops, the >beeper< goes down, first through ‘used car dealer’ then eventually to ‘used parts dealer’.

Scarp, sorry recycling centres, have a specific a'hole test. It's how they are able to ensure continuity of 💩service. As a youth I spent many hours keeping my cars going via scrap yards and the people running them were defiantly of a type!

Different country, but some businesses just are monkey businesses. Here also "environment" "protecting" people make running earnest scrapyard very complicated - so it also likely selects special kind of people out.

Absolutely correct Christian it's the same in the UK, second hand car part dealers from my experience know very little if anything at all about engines or transmissions they are just in it to make an easy buck

Love the use of “debacle”. I know the word and its usage. Examples ..brexit, migrant processes, uk economy. Never heard it used in connection with second hand engines. Good luck with the strip down.

Christian, I feel your pain. I bought a Range Rover TDv8 recently sight unseen and immediately shoved it back into an auction once I looked it over! It was dreadful! I wish I could've found you an engine here in the UK and shipped it to you

I had a similar compression tester that also gave unfeasibly low readings (when i tried it on a vw petol engine that was in reasonable health). I reached the conclusion that because the schrader valve was located at the gauge end of the 'plumbing', the rubber hoses not only effectively increased the combusion chamber volume, but also flexed slightly under pressure. I consigned it to the 'what was I thinking' shelf, and bought a 'Laser Tools #2516', which has the valve at the sparkplug end of the hose, and which has (I suspect) a schrader valve core of the correct specification, rather than a standard tyre valve.

I haven’t read all the comments, but just in case it hasn’t already been mentioned, we carry out compression tests on these by doing a relative compression test using an oscilloscope monitoring the current taken to turn the engine. To get an actual figure you can us3 a pressure transducer in one cylinder and use the curren5 to show figures for all cylinders. The current method still uses the same 10% max difference rule. Then if you want a bigger picture of what is going on, you can also monitor exhaust, intake and crankcase pressure to see where there are any lpressure losses or irregularities

Im sure you researched damaged cars with good engines. Im toying with putting an om606 engine in my Defender, as i can, as live in the UK, but i will be looking for an MOTd Mercedes so i can drive it for a few months to make sure all is good. New camera is an improvement to your already excellent channel ❤

We do things like check our wormeries, make sure the car has not been stolen, kick litter out the way when walking the dog, read a newspaper designed for an 8 year old , drink lots of cheap fizzy alcoholic drinks, eat low value food and wash our rusty old cars with love!! ❤
