In today's video, we'll show you how to clean an old old gasoline lighter.
I bought this rusty lighter at auction. The lighter was in poor condition, very rusty and inoperable.
Something y history:
Petrol lighter
Petrol lighters are mostly metal and in the lower part there is a container in which the lighter body is inserted. The inside of the body is filled with cotton wool or other sucking substance that absorbs combustible material (mostly technical gasoline) and holds it from evaporation. A wick is introduced into the lighter body and moistened with combustible material. When crossed out, flammable mixtures are ignited, causing a flame.
Some types of lighters have an area around the wick protected by a special part that is perforated and allows the flame to burn even when the wind blows or falls to the ground. This technology is patented.
The best-known gasoline lighters are Zippo products, which guarantee their users quality. The company provides a lifetime warranty on all its lighters. Another worldwide brand is the Austrian IMCO with almost a century of tradition in the production of gasoline lighters of its own patent known in the Czech Republic also under the name "rakušák".

Congratulations! You guys seem to stand among the only restoration teams on youtube who pay a profound respect to surfaces, to the original texture of an antique object's surface. You do ensure that an object with its surface highly damaged by rust and age is restored to its pristine smoothness. Meanwhile, most other restorers just get rid of the rust and then cover the damaged surface with a new coat of paint, making the whole thing look like sand that has been pissed on.

@@VeradonaRestoration also helps to have hollow ground screw drivers in just the right size. These usually come as kits with one handle and a number of bits to fit. as handy as you are tho, just make what you need.

@@VeradonaRestoration I use a set of Jeweler's or watchmaker's screwdriver tips and holder for this tiny stuff. works well. You might get a small watch repair kit like I did, with a watch vise. the watch vise will hold the lighter still while you do whatever.

Nice work. I don't know how old this lighter is, but the design dates from around 1912. They still make them today, though the ones made today are mostly low quality knock offs of period lighters.

Zdravím Michale, já domácí moc nepoužívám, zdá se mi že fungují dost pomalu. Preferuji radeji mechanické očištšní a poté konzervaci odrezovačem. Ale používají na KZbin různé návody . Pokud chcete něco méně pracného, dobře funguje elektrolýza viz. mé video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2GYhWeghtWFmrc jen na místo nerezu použijte obyč. kov . Údajně nerez něco vylučuje méně zdravého :)

nice job. What is that "soldering liquid" I've never seen that before. Also, that's a unique method of plating I have not seen either. How's that work? most people do electroplating. Me, I like the polished brass look. Is there a name on that lighter? were you able to determine the age? That style has been made for a very long time, it's even made yet today (but obviously this is old and of better quality than modern ones.) by the way, ordinary cotton balls from the drugstore work for the filler. you can open them up into long strips and they go right in.

The soldering liquid helps the solder to stick better on the surface of the metall. There was a rest of solder on both sides of the metall plate. With the help of a little bit soldering lequid, it sticks on the lighter even if you use a adhesive. The lighter was brass plated and i think he removed the brass layer with a sulfuric acid solution.

Soldering liquid: Soft solder flux with Sn-Pb solder. It is especially suitable for soldering copper and poorly solderable parts. It does not contain halogens in any form. Nickel bath: High-gloss nickel bath. It is suitable for metallization of steels, copper and its alloys and aluminum. The thickness of the layer that is deposited on the surface is dependent on the length of the dive and the nickel reduction, i.e. typically from 15 to 60 microns. The deposition rate is 30 microns per hour. Phosphorus content is 4-8%, surface hardness after heat treatment up to 1000 HV. A liter of the bath can cover an area of 7 - 10 dm square. Plating conditions: Perfectly degreased part, immersion in the bath preheated to 82-95 ° C for at least 10 minutes. The lighter is from Kervoline
