Only few conductors keep a good balance between the choir and the orchestra, on the Dies Irae. If you hear other recordings here on youtube, you will find most of time the choir to disappear during the forte. Hear this recording again. Abbado had this challenge in mind and was able to keep a beautiful and clear presence of the vocal section, also during the most powerful moments.

This is pretty spectacular. Dynamics are perfect. Lazy directors barely pay attention to the markings. The orchestra was really clean, and the choral balance is fantastic, with plenty of baritone and bass.

This is the exact recording I was looking for, and the first time I've seen it on video! I had this recording on an album long ago and have looked for it for 20 years. One of my all-time favourite songs. I'm amazed at how flawlessly this orchestra performs this piece. I honestly think that every moment is just perfectly executed and beautifully expressed.

La Lacrimosa di Mozart rimane un capolavoro assoluto, ma la considero molto diversa da questo. È e sarà sempre qualcosa di sublime, qualcosa di divino. Però per me il lavoro di Verdi arriva dritto allo stomaco, come un pugno: rende meglio il concetto di "IRA" (Dies Irae). Perciò voto 10 ad entrambe, semplicemente le considero diverse, e per me il Dies Irae è più di Verdi, mentre Mozart non ne esce sconfitto: le categorie cui si riferisce con la sua musica sono le categorie eterne del classicismo, unito a quel suo carattere eccentrico.

+MarcoTheBlue Lei parla di pugno allo stomaco , parla di confronti , ed è sempre parte del complesso di inferiorità che noi Italiani abbiamo nei confronti dei tedeschi. Il discorso sarebbe lungo e andrebbe alle radici della musica e non solo. Le dirò una cosa , questi discorsi li fecero anche quando debuttò questo capolavoro e Brahms venne in Italia ad ascoltarlo , i giornalisti tedeschi domandarono se Verdi avesse composto la "solita" opera , lui disse che aveva non aveva mai ascoltato qualcosa che potesse essere paragonato a ciò. Per concludere le dico che: 1° anche Mozart copiava alla grande ed è stato scritto anche un libro: 2° che il film "Amadeus" ha meritato gli oscar vinti e , quindi , è un grande film , ma E' un FALSO storico !

Very good. As a composer, I have made several arrangements of these sections. I am almost always disappointed by all recording not of Von Karajan. But this, is very good. And there's often a good Dies Irae, but most recordings loose me at the Tuba Mirum. Though there is more to the Tuba Mirum, what is here, is very good.
