Young people often play this concerto better than more mature ones. They forget that apart from great beauty and passion, there is also great humour and wit. Not something forgotten by Mr Kavakos. A brilliantly original performance and so full of energy. The intonation is absolutely perfect, even in the first movement cadenza. Dazzling, poetic, passionate and funny... what more do you want?

Staggering! The passion, musicality, phrasing, colors and nuances...and all at a tempo (3rd. Mvt.) tht would dizzy a whirling dervish. We are living in times where there is really no shortage of great violinists, yet Kavakos is a category unto himself.
@ChrisBreemer10 жыл бұрын
Few violinists possess a tone so sweet and strong, combined with impeccable taste and virtuosity. Kavakos really is top of the bill. And he looks so calm and impassive under it. Not very exciting to look at... but the performance can hardly be bettered. Many thanks for this great upload.

Amazing Concerto. "We are living in times where there is really no shortage of great violinists, yet Kavakos is a category unto himself." And the orchestra is fantastic too. What a combo. Why can't I own a recording of this?

Kavakos is superb and Tchaikovsky is even greater. The combination gives an outstanding result. I'm Greek and though I'm happy to know that Kavakos was educated in Greece and is a Greek I must say that he is a universal value when it comes to art. Artists like that belong to the whole world and not to a certain nation. They belong to everyone who can appreciate their art. It's bad to try to find flaws on greatness for nationalistic reasons and/or personal disscontent for one's failed achievements and dreams.

The most exciting orchestral playing of this piece I've ever heard. Brilliant conducting and very fine players. Wonderful ensemble strings, wind, brass, percussion. All of them. And Kavakos at his individual best. I wish I had been there. I don't care that it's ten years old. Still the most vibrant performance available.

What an amazing piece of music and the marvelous and so talented Kavakos. If you do not get goose bumps watching and listening , well then, I'm sorry for you. Notice the beautiful young lady playing 2nd or 3rd violin usually over his left shoulder...she can't take her eyes off him and at the end, claps loudly while others tap their bows...think she knew a good thing when she heard it? Well, I did...thank you for the upload, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you for bringing that fruitless discussion to an end, Sorcerer2k. For those of us not expert in violin techniques it did become a little tedious for a while there... but we can agree about two things can't we' all of us? Karavos' playing is remarkable, both technically superb and showing a clear passion for the composer. And, isn't this just a glorious concerto? Can't we all just celebrate that without getting into endless bickering about bowing styles?

Precisely.He was a student of the great Josef Gingold,himself an Ysae student.Mr. Galamian certainly dominated the violin scene in NY in the 50's & 60's at which time nobody who wasn't his student could win a big NY competition (particularly the Leventritt)&his success is indisputable. Stil & with all respect,he wasn't the only violin teacher in the world.His concept of bowing was very individual-with an extreme extension of the 1st finger on the bow & a very precise alignment of the left hand.

If you look closely you will see that he has the same bowhold as Heifetz, the one you regard, I suppose, to be among the greatest (with which I agree).

Maria Papaefthymiou Listen to it very carefully. Repeat it several times if you need to. Raise the volume if you need to. The bottom of the chord at the first spot is off harmonically. At the second spot, the top note he plays at the end of the arpeggio is a wrong note.

I think there are things that might even be easier with his way of holding the bow, but it has drawbacks as well. It's more like the way used to hold it in the 19th century.

@zhujunese13 жыл бұрын
@rapter9800 How do you make a standard for a bow holding? If he can make the notes clean, smooth, stonge, and have fantastic bow control, he can hold the bow in anyway he wants. By the way, he's left handed. maybe this is one of reasons why his right hand looks so firm. when you see more from his vidioes, you can tell more about him technically and musicly.

@zhujun516 Yes his bow control is very good, however there are places where his "tight," as you said, bow hold transfer into a harsh note or two which just ruins that one part. For example, around 45:52 and places similar, there are a few notes that sound incredibly harsh and scratchy, and don't say it's because he wants to "express himself" or that it's the "character of the piece," it isn't, it's a result of his poor bow hold.

Wait wait wait wait, is that BOW VIBRATO at 44:46-44:52???!!!!!!??? Wow, haven't seen much of that before.
@arazaratsyan64786 жыл бұрын
In the second movement he kinda does bow vibrato on the long D-Eb trills possibly because you can't really do left hand vibrato while trilling so he substitutes it with bow vibrato. That's actually a pretty good way to get around that if you want vibrato on trills, but trills in themselves are already varying pitch so I'm not sure if you'd want vibrato on top of that and you don't really hear it that much on the trills. Nonetheless, it's an interesting addition to one's arsenal of stylistic options.
@deathspenalty11 жыл бұрын
I have a question tough. Is there really a "RIGHT" way? Because sure, a certain style should be learned, but we are not all the same, and once someone grasps the basics and starts to evolve, maybe a different style of how to hold an instrument might work for him, or am i wrong somehow?
@rapter980013 жыл бұрын
@zhujun516 Second of all, a bow hold should not be "tight" in the first place, that's the first thing my violin teacher taught me. For perfect tone and smooth playing, one must be relaxed while playing, not tight and high-tensioned like a piano string. If you look at the notable violinists, all of them incorporate a loose wrist into their playing, whereas Kavakos has no wrist movement at all.
@rapter980013 жыл бұрын
@HeiligerPavianarsch To answer your question, I admit that I have not played this part. I freely admit that I am not a complete expert on violin technique. However, when you claim that I am a complete ignoramus on this subject, I will have to disagree. You also seem to exaggerate the difficulty of this piece; I have seen countless modern day professionals play this cleaner than Kavakos here. To list a few: Bell, Suwanai, Mutter, Anton Szalai, Sarah Chang, etc.
