this is a note I just left for radio slovakia youtube channel " I was just listening to you in southern Michigan USA on a realistic dx100 just using it's telescopic antenna. You were talking about some symphony coming up and it will be the first that people can attend. The dx 100 was realistic's (radio shack) most inexpensive receiver, sort of meant to introduce young people to the hobby. You folks were coming in clear and strong. Slovakia is a long way from Michigan!" I hadn't used the radio in a couple of years. I also was able to hear about 4 or 5 different conversations going on on ssb and that worked pretty good. I'm usually never able to tune those in on kenwood r 300,dx 150,dx 160 etc. I did go thru it about 5 years ago cleaned things up,aligned it the best I could. I couldn't get the dial very accurate. 650 was on about 620, 2.5 was just about exactly on 2.25. I actually got it out to just test it out ,thinking about selling it but now may keep it. I used to like to listen to 650 from nashville on saturday nights. I actually like the sound of it for that type of listening (in that case it's live country music from nashville). I'm somewhat curious what antenna you have there? for my other radios I've got the wire wrapped around the broomstick deal with just regular wire for lead in vertically about 25 feet high and I have about 160 feet of wire in an L shape about 10 feet high, again with just regular wire lead in. The long wire is only slightly better for reception but is "noisier" I usually just use the broomstick deal. I'm in somewaht of a rural setting, not like downtown detroit I'm actually pretty close to the west side of michigan about 30 miles from lake michigan and about 30 miles to the michigan indiana border. Most of the time I don't pick up much of anything but tonight I was getting quite a bit of stuff.

I wanted one so bad back in the early 80's and never got one. Finally got one from Ebay and it arrived yesterday 10/13. I love it. Even though I have other SW receivers I bought just because I could.

I remember the BFO being kind of jumpy and touchy. My biggest gripe was the images and getting the same stations at two spots on the dial. It was my first serious radio also though and I remember the sense of adventure tuning in all that pre-internet world.

I came very close to buying one of these, back in the day, but (almost accidentally) ran into a guy who had a slightly used radio that I paid $90.oo for. Drake SSR-1. Which , for a 16 year old was really quite a radio. 📻🙂

Thanks for making this video! This was my first real communications receiver back when it came out. I think I remember it being better than it really was, but hey I was a kid and it worked. They make re-cap kits and there are mods to help address the drift, but yeah it was a starter radio, and among the "new breed" of non-boat anchor receivers coming out at the time.

A bad radio is usually better than no radio, eh?

I love these old receivers with many knobs and switches. Thats a fun radio for sure. The old school s-meter is cool. OK, the drift seems to be annoying like the early Tecsun BCL-2000/ Grundig S350.

More than one but none are compact like a Sony ICF SW 7600, or newer models.....all were tabletop, like a Collins 75S 3B or a Drake SPR-4. These have the filtering and stability of modern Receivers, including SDR receivers. These table tops where Solid State, no tubes.
