Verdy, your choice of editing, being in black and white like the movie was genius!! The hero throughout the movie is George, for sacrificing his hopes and dreams for others. The unsung hero throughout the movie is Mary, rounding the town together because she knew her husband was in trouble and loved him so deeply to reach out to everyone. Pure Gold 🪙 of a reaction. I have seen many reactions to this movie, you were brilliant. Merry Christmas to you and your family and nothing but love. David (Virginia) USA

FUN FACT: When drunk Uncle Billy walks off screen, the crash was NOT planned. A member of the stage crew dropped a tray of props, and the actor went with it. The movie was nominated for an Oscar for sound, and the guy on the crew was given a $10 bonus for "enhancing the sound".

The "Crash" was in October, 1929. This bank "run" is a little later, in the 1930s. There were a few back then. It is in 1934-35 that Potter offers a position to George. If 1934, the $20,000/yr that he offers is like $470,000 today. If 1935, $400,000 today. The $8,000 that Uncle Billy lost in 1945, and for which George is facing prison, is like $140,000 today.

Beautifully done, Verdy. I grew up watching James Stewart and black and white films. I cried the first time I saw this over 50 years ago. I still cry when I watch this during the Holidays. I’ve had some dark moments in my life where I wished I could go back to correct my past mistakes. But now I know if I did, I would only make new mistakes. When I see my little boy’s eyes I stop regretting. I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Merry Christmas, Verdy.

I remember watching this on TV when I was a kid, and I remembered loving it the moment I saw it. Ironically enough, I rarely ever cry during movies, but this one has made me cry a few times recently. When I was younger, I didn't even cry once during this film. I just shrugged after seeing it the first time, and I admitted it was a touching movie with a great story to myself. But as I get older and understand life a bit more, I feel more emotional about it to the point that when I saw it again recently, I cried. It's one of those rare movies that gets better with age, and I just find it baffling how this film never got to me emotionally when I was younger. But as I get older, it hits me harder in the feels every time. Probably because I know what it's like to put one's own dreams aside to help others that are close to you, so I can definitely relate to George Bailey.

One of the most important factors in how well the movie "sells" the concept is how much George HATES how much he is always giving- even though nobody is forcing him to do it. It's his own character-- that part he got from his father-- that compels him to be that way and he fights it all the way. I think most people resent when we have to do something we know is the right thing to do, but didn't want to do it. That's why we can relate to George Bailey.

See the thing is...obviously, like everyone else, you'll rewatch this over and over every holiday season, and...when folks ask what you're favorite holiday movie is you're always thinking "You mean besides It's a Wonderful Life?" lol glad you enjoyed it. And BTW...the gym with the pool underneath?...that's the famous Swim Gym at Beverly Hills High School. Yes, and so they were not paying attention when they needed to file the paperwork to extend the copyright. So local tv stations were able to show this again and again without having to pay for it and so as more and more people watched it, it gained the reputation it has now. (I understand that they have since copyrighted the music, which in effect copyrights the movie again.)

A little trivia: The evil Mr. Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore. Great Uncle to actress Drew Barrymore, and from the famed acting Barrymore's from way back when..His brother was John (an even bigger name then) , and sister Ethel..Drew played the little girl in ET, and "Firestarter", and went on to star, and direct, in many movies since.

Another aspect of this movie is how it affected those who were not on the front lines in WW II, but support soldiers (who were actually the majority of those who served... maintaining the supply lines, shipping etc), and those who did not serve (like George), but kept life going from 1941-1945 in America. Many of these "non-heroes" suffered from a belief that they had missed out on being a hero, seeing the World away from their homes, in what was the biggest event of their lifetimes and felt worthless and depressed because of it. George's plight showed people the value of just being a decent person who did what they could for their communities and families, showing how important one life could be to all those around him. It gave hope that they could too have "A Wonderful Life"... A great film that shows the frustrations of soldiers who were not in the "Action" of the war is "Mister Roberts" 1955 (Color) - Starring Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Jimmy Cagney, based on a stage play. Thanks for a great reaction!

The scene where Marry loses her robe isn’t a generational thing. George is good and is being playful knowing all along that he was going to give the robe back. It’s called flirting and having a hood sense of humor. Today’s generation have been brainwashed to be scared of everything and be offended by everything . To me it’s a playful scene and it never even occurred to me he had any intention of not giving her the robe or trying to see her naked. I watch this movie every year. Makes my heart soft after a hard year and gives me hope there’s still goodness out in the world

You should watch some of his other pictures. The storylines usually follow the same idea of the hero having problems but eventually overcoming them. He also did a lot of spots for support of the troops during WW2.❤

The bank runs caused many banks to close thus destroying the savings of millions of people. That's what led to the Great Depression. The Bailey Savings and Loan survived with $2 because they were still technically liquid at the end of the day when the "Bank Holiday" began, closing banks by order of the President until the Federal Reserve could flood the banks with cash.

23:05 The reason George is rejecting Mary is not to play "hard to get", but because getting married means giving up his dream of travel. In those days there was no reliable birth control, no child care, and women didn't work. If George gets married children will come soon, and he will have to have a steady job for the next 20 years to support them. He will be stuck in Bedford Falls for life. 25:33 George's outburst is him giving up his last hope of achieving his lifelong goal, surrendering to his love for Mary.

This was Jimmy Stewart's first film after WW2. He was a B-24 bomber commander and flew many missions over Europe. He was even in the first allied bomber raid over Berlin. He was the Squadron wing commander and saw thousands of his own men get shot down and killed. The heavy emotional scenes in this film were partially from him letting go of the stress and anger built up inside, (PTSD).

The Great Depression started in 1929 with the stock market crash, the bank run scene happens in 1932. Many banks failed because they ran out of funds, a run on the bank is when people literally run to get what money out they can. The bank in turn calls in all it's loans, and one was to the Bailey Building and Loan.

Mr Potter is played by Lionel Barrymore, who is the grandfather of Drew Barrymore. Another wonderful movie that he was in, and this time he was not the villain, is a movie called Captains Courageous. I don't know if it would be a very good reaction, because at this point, only people who love movies have seen it. But it is a wonderful movie and it would be an hour and a half that you would treasure.

Not bad for an old black and white film, huh? Your reaction was perfect, because you kept the interruptions to a minimum and didn't try to upstage the movie. Great job.

One of the very few actually wholesome, pure movies from Hollywood that aren't loaded with subversive elements and conditioning.
