We decoded NASA’s messages to aliens by hand

In 1977, twin golden records were sent into space on the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. Still sailing through space at nearly 60,000 km per hour, the records contain sound, songs, and images from earth. But how did NASA include images on an analog record? Here, we decoded the audio, and see the images the way that aliens were intended to see them.
Video by: Cory Zapatka, William Poor, Sophie Erickson
Graphics: Alex Parkin
Audio: Andrew Marino

Director of Audience Development: Ruben Salvadori

Thanks to: Alessandra Potenza, Ron Barry
Special thanks to Ron Barry for walking us through his own audio decoding process, which got us excited in the story over a year ago. You can read about his own adventure and watch his process produce results in real-time in his own video in the links below:

Imagine in the future if the aliens that found the record managed to decode it, and when they arrive to our system, the sun would already be a red giant and the earth was eaten by it, that will be depressing.
@magneticman245

We should launch other probes that have a golden record, but rather than sending them out into interstellar space, we should put one in orbit around each planet of our solar system. That way, if aliens find our solar system long after the sun has destroyed Earth, they may find a probe near one of the surviving planets and they can be sure they found the right star.

@@SauronTheDarkLordOfMordor No the whole decode thinking is just intelligent thinking. For one if a alien species was to find the voyager, they would already know it is coming from an alien race compared to them. So they will have at least 2 thought processes. One is to figure out its purpose, i.e. decode it. Two is to figure out where it came from, i.e. decode it. Either way they will decode it. The only way I can think of that they wouldn't attempt that is if it was to crash land on a planet many thousands or millions of years later, in which case it would be completely destroyed anyway, so nothing to decode. That or they wouldn't attempt to decode it if they were not intelligent enough to understand its alien origin. Regardless, hopefully they wont be the type to decode it and find a planet ripe for colonization.

The Voyager 1 probe is like the ultimate “Life was here!” message sent out into the cosmos. Eon’s from now, where humanity has been long extinct or the earth has been consumed by our dying Sun, the golden disc may find itself with an advanced intelligent species that is capable of deciphering and understanding the messages, and they’ll know what went down on this pale blue dot. And even if nothing finds it, it’s still beautiful to think that a glimpse of humanity’s memory will be drifting through interstellar space far after we are gone.

So... In order to receive this message, aliens have to use a device very specific to humans with a setting explained in a way that not even the average human can understand... And this was made by the same guys that are clever enough to put a man on the moon with a computer with the processing power of an old MP3 player... Something is quite not right... It would be more plausible that an alien sent it to their own spatial base and humans are trying to cover it with this nonsense explanation. Just saying...

By the first time any civilization able to recognize the step-by-step to let the disc vibrates frequency, they know they are into something. So why did we send human device to the outer space? because we are human, and we're trying to execute our best bet to the black space of the universe. so.

Not exactly impossible either. While it's almost certain that intelligent life will evolve eye like organs that gain info by absorbing light (it is a result of something essential to life), it's not certain that they will use sound to gain info like animals on Earth.

My friend gifted me a copy of this a few years ago. We had many discussions about how stacked against the odds are of any intelligent species being able to decode anything on the disc. The main one is assuming that the aliens who find it have the ability to see and hear similarly to the organisms on Earth. That alone is a game over. They would need to have the ability to "see" wavelengths of light, and "hear" the differences in air pressure. The audio is useless in the vacuum of space. The visuals are useless in the absence of the visible light spectrum of humans.

But think about this... we already have the ability to see wavelengths we otherwise can't. By the help of technology we can interpret those signals into signals we can see. We can "hear" outer space, we can visualize infra-red to visible light, wi can detect radiosignals and convert them to images and sound and we can use microphones to detect infra sound and then turn it into audible sound. For sure the aliens even evolved different to us could do this to as it is a must for a species to evolve into a space traveling civilization You even saw this in action as the video showed us how a chaotic noise was turned into images just by using a computer.
