I have everything connected as they say and powered down every other 3rd party device in my home and still can't get the VMS DVR/Video Media Server 4100 to activate. On screen prompt "Were having trouble activating your device. If you get server temporarily unavailable or cannot be reached errors wait a few minutes and press Retry activation." Hmmm Spectrum even with their problems looking so much better.

Right??? I said the same thing! My dad pays 200 bucks a month for not even a premium package and when I asked for a tech to come and do this, they were gonna charge him 150! I had to have a friend come help. It's ridiculous how they expect an elderly person to do this themselves

@@diogomonica82 I called support. It’s cheaper for them to have someone overseas do it for you than to have a tech. I spent about an hour on the phone. My devices weren’t even registered. It wasn’t even my fault why it wasn’t working. Awful. I pay 170 for cable and WiFi. Plus I have a cell service separate

@@diogomonica82I'm in the same situation with my almost 90 year old M-I-L. I'm tech savvy but the router is in the basement and there isn't an available electrical outlet. There is a router extender on the 2nd floor but I have to contact tech support (good luck on that) and ask if the video media server can be connected to the extender.

Yes, you can as a customer. It's not that hard. You already have all the existing cables. Just replace your cable box and you're Router, that is it

@@bradhaughton6698 not true for a brand new customer who does NOT have any preexisting wiring set up in the building, which was the case for me because up until a year ago, my building and the surrounding buildings couldnt get any other cable service besides optimum for whatever reason. So my building had to set up fiber optic cables and all that bc optimum's pre-existing wiring in my building doesnt include that. So dont assume that every customer can do it on their own especially when you dont even know what their current financial/living situation is and if verizon fios service was already available in their area, bc like i said, verizon was only available in manhattan , and no where else in nyc up until around early 2022, when verizon was able to make fios service available to Bronx , Bklyn and Queens residents.

@@bradhaughton6698 i was a new customer and verizon service wasnt made available in my building, or even the entire bronx, brooklyn & queens area up until late 2021, early 2022. Which means no preexisting fiber optic cables bc optimum doesnt use that. Optimum was the only cable service you can get if you lived in the bronx, aside from private home owners who also had the option to get direct tv satellite cable service. My building obviously didnt allow direct tv cable service either.

does the vms have to be connected to the same splitter as the router, therefore in the same room as the router? Does it not work like the old set top box which was connected to the ONT via its own coax?

It doesn't have to be in the same room. Both of mine are connected to the same splitter but that splitter is right next to the ONT with two separate coax runs, one to my LR, where the VMS is located, and one to my Study Room where the router is located. Both are many feet apart in opposite sides of my house. I like to keep the router near my desktop computer in my study so I can run a direct rj45 cable to it, and I use my laptop via WIFI to the router. Even with a direct cable with a desktop, you'll still need to use the router PW in your OS to have your system recognize it just like a WIFI connection.

FWIW, the only way I got this to work was using the 4-way coax splitter and capping the unused outs. I have no clue with the subpar instructions how anyone can figure this out; let alone my senior parents whom I am assisting on this disaster.

If you're using the old router, yes, if you're not using the gateway router, the black one or the white router, which is Wi-Fi 6? I would recommend upgrading to the Wi-Fi 6 router

Verizon doesn't have cablecards anymore. Also, the HDHomerun Prime isn't made anymore since cablecards are "end of life" in the US.

@@xNYCMarc I talked to someone at Verizon because I am moving and will be setting up Fios service. They told me that they do still offer CableCards. You can find plenty of HDHomerun Primes on ebay. If they don't offer CableCards then their TV service is pretty useless to me. Especially if their video is running off of WiFi to their newer receivers. No thanks to that nonsense. If it can't be hardwired then I have no interest. Also I haven't found anything that can beat Channels DVR now that Tivo is pretty much dead when it comes to dedicated DVRs. Most cloud based DVRs are too limited. Rather have my own dedicated physical DVR.

I'm upgrading to this right now, and this is not complicated to set up if you already have the cables and router You already have some of the existing cable, just reuse it and just connect the new cable that came in the box.

Not only did I not request this equipment, but the remote that came with it is a big downgrade from my old one. It has little tiny buttons and no lighted keys. The room has to be bright and I need my glasses on to even use it. This whole "upgrade" is a big downgrade for me. Going to the DVR and finding what I want is also much more difficult and "klugy."

In a sense sort of an ad for Yttv, where all you need is the router. The media server gives you all that info that the streaming servers do not have. This is the horse and buggy whip end of the cable TV era. It is a great horse and buggy whip.... but nobody cares.

I discussed this with some advanced users. The whole Ethernet cable + coax cable is redundant. The VMS can connect to the ONT directly without a second connection to the router. All the router connection does is provide internet service which can be obtained from the ONT anyway.
