I love story like this. I know a guy who lost his job and didn't know what to do and rent was due. He was taking out the trash and notice a pile of cardboard next to the trash can and got an idea. He made a handy man available sign he posted outside his apartment. Now he owns his own successful construction company.

This was inspiring. There is just one thing I don't like about those buildings. I prefer nice big roof overhangs all the way around to give the walls a better rain protection. You obviesly can not keep them totally dry if there is wind with the rain but it helps.

Would love to see a tiny house/cottage/cabin build with all the Jon Peters details when complete. You mentioned septic at the end of the video. If it's possible for you and yours to go with a composting toilet, I'd highly recommend it, for sustainability, as well as cost. For grey water, look into filtered discharge. Also, if you have adequate exposure on your property, I'd highly suggest a solar and battery system with mostly DC for lighting, charging electronics, even some appliances (TV, fridge/freezer, etc.), and an inverter for the occasional AC load, such as a microwave. If your property has any creeks or streams, you could also look into micro-hydro. With a 2 micron filter, potentially with additional carbon filtration for taste, you could even supply fresh and portable water for the structure. Done carefully, you could have a very comfy off-grid getaway with little to no operating costs!
@rolfbjorn99376 жыл бұрын
Running on DC is not more efficient, requires more amperage and larger wires for the same load. It's dependent on voltage, but turning solar/battery to high voltage DC may not be the best plan. Running a refrigerator/freezer requires 600-2000 Watts of power.

Really interesting tour Jon. Gotta admire Dominic for the way he started small & wound up with a business like that employing 50 people. IF you do decide to go that rout, I'd suggest putting in an oversized septic system that way if you want to add more living space later on you won't have to do all of that work over & have to pull more permits, etc.. etc.. Been there done that. I mentioned this in one of your other videos and suggested that you also look at Modular homes from various companies in Canada. The prices are really good because of the exchange rate between the U.S. & Canada. The nice thing about modulars is that all you have to do is the septic, foundation & site work. Once they drop the modular in place & you hook up the electric, etc.. you can move right in with no other work to do. I know that you probably don't want to go that rout but just thought that I would mention it...........Good luck no matter what you decide & I can't wait for follow up on this project that I hope happens for you................. :)

Some observations and experiences. First, if you expect nice fitting laps/joints, etc., prepare to be disappointed. An example from the video is at 7:40. Boards twist/bend/etc. as they dry. Bear in mind that that lap joint is intended to show after the walls are insulated/finished. If you have an OCD spouse (or you yourself just can't stand the ill-fitting look), you won't like it. Also, their tolerances on cutting leave a lot to be desired. They do point out that there are variances in dimensions by up to 1/2". That is ok for the most part, but can be a HUGE pain in the rear for others. An example is the 'bird blocking' boards that go between the rafters at the wall to prevent birds from entering. If you are only concerned with keeping birds out, they work fine. But since rafters can be skinnier by up to 1/2", that can lead to a bird blocking board that is 1" (1/2" for each rafter) too short. Not good for bug-proofing! This could have been satisfactorily resolved if they had provided the bird blocking boards 1" too long and I could have cut them to exact length, but instead, I had to buy new boards locally to cut them to fit. Not a huge expense, but basically the boards provided by them were unused. Don't get me wrong, I like the building, but it's not all as neat and tidy as it seems. ;)

Does this company make any profits selling these buildings? If so, that is so disappointing because we need Vermont to be the first socialist state, to see if it works.
