The song is a tribute song about Ernest Tubb also known as The Texas Troubadour and references his most famous song, WALKING THE FLOOR OVER YOU. Tubb was an early country music legend who influenced generations of country music singers.

When I was in high school in the fifties, my sister and I would get off the bus after an eight mile bus ride, go in the house and turn on the radio and listen to The Charle Walker show out of San Antonio, Tex Charle was a famous country disc jockey. He played classics as well as current music. So imagine what classics were like in 1950’s . Charlie even had a couple of hits himself, including Don’t Squeeze my Charming, Pick me up on Your Way Dow, and The Chocolate Song. This song reminds me of the kind of music we got to listen to every day back then.

Vern Co-wrote and sang it first, but it has been covered by a few people. Jamey Johnson is the 1st that comes to mind, but I think Daryl Singletary and Cris Stapleton did as well. Break my Mind was actually a George Hamilton IV song covered by Vern as well as Linda Ronstadt and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Vern had the best rendition by far. Rating was on spot.

I think this is my favorite Vern Gosdin song. When you said that Alan Jackson sometimes sounds similar to Vern, I believe he did influenced Alan. (Read it somewhere.) Would any of the Texans here consider this a two-step?
