Okay I was skeptical coming into this video, but that skit made a compelling point. Also if you think about it, Dare giving the mission plan can go both ways for the story. Some could argue that it would be detrimental to the mystery part of the story or even the story itself, but at the same time you can argue that it would give the story more of a coherent plot and rather than each member fending for themselves after drop they're more focused on finding each other and finding a way into the city's infrastructure.

I agree with all of this. The ODST story has always rubbed me the wrong way, the characters do not seem like professional military, they seem like union factory workers going to a football game. Their operation is terribly planned, To me what makes the least sense about ODST is the Rookie's core objective of tracking down his squad. The only interaction he has with them before they drop is being bullied by them. They don't like him, as shown by the fact that they do not look for or even mention him after dropping. The only reason he ever even finds them is because they come back to the city for DARE, not for him! If Buck hadn't wanted pussy, the rookie would have been left behind. His objective should be to just escape the city alive, avoid the Covenant, and link back up with anyone from the UNSC. He can actually help the war effort that way, farting around looking for 5 guys who he can't be sure are even alive is the same as going AWOL.

I used to Veronica a lot when the game first came out, and now after hearing this and the points made, it does make a lot of sense. Had she given at least a small explanation of the things that weren’t classified about the mission, things would’ve been different. I wouldn’t say this was entirely her fault though, she works for ONI, and the fact that they made the mission classified kinda points the arrow more in their direction more than hers. I’d say it’s not entirely her fault, but at the same time she’s not entirely out of the blame? She could’ve done something, heck, she could’ve gone behind ONI’s back and actually tell them the mission, something like that would’ve been interesting. I don’t know, I just felt that her character had so much potential but she fell short because we know absolutely nothing about her aside from her relationship with Buck. It would’ve been nice if we could’ve actually gotten a character arc for her in the game, and have a moment where we played as her in the campaign. We could’ve learned so much more about her and why she can’t talk about anything to the team. If we had that, she would’ve been redeemed I think. If she ever makes a return in the franchise, hopefully we’ll get to learn more about her.

She's actually pretty chill for a spook - both in universe and in our own universe. They're not ONI troops and they're not Special Forces. They are the equivalent of WWII paratroopers. Volunteers yes - but volunteers who in peacetime would be grunt regulars. Her orders from above were probably to tell them nothing and also given how far fetched the plan was she probably figured - not incorrectly given their reactions to the engineer, that this long shot cloak and dagger plan was absolutely ridiculous and they would not disruptively question it if they are already far into the mission. Edit: Also she chooses Buck because yeah they have a history but she clearly trusts him and as far as ODSTs go from whatever is left at that point she wants someone she can trust. It is also implied throughout the game that first the disruption from the blast means communications are not great. She also would not want to yell instructions at him while he is in a firefight, and thereafter the Covenant are jamming communications. By the time you find her about 10 to 12 hours after the drop she's clearly been having a really bad time doing escape and evasion with even less firepower than you and unable to raise anyone.

If he was any better, he’d be a Spartan (and then he became a Spartan) Dutch and Mickey were the rare humans who had interactions with forerunner AI. Rookie was the only survivor of a massive FUBAR operation on New Jerusalem. Originally I thought she was supposed to go to the alpha sight to get the superintendent, but there's a contradictory piece of information. During uplift reserve you find out the seargent who was in direct contact with ONI knew about the mission to "snag a tier 1 asset" at the landing sight of the Carrier (BTW, the platform for the carrier's gravlift is not in a place where we see the carrier in Halo 2, the carrier doesn't even need a platform for it's gravlift and the platform is too small for the circumference of the lift) so either Dare was going to get a different Engineer and diverted to get virgil, or the tier 1 asset the Sgt. Mentioned is a fluke. ODST is full of major story inconveniences because it's not a very good game below the surface of it's characters sounding and looking cool, and because it was actually just the testing bed for ideas in reach.
@SogenOkami4 жыл бұрын
Okay so the thing is Dare just grabbing a bunch of random dudes for a mission and giving no details about the mission is actually a thing that happens IRL. A good example is towards the end of Vietnam, a ship was stolen so a bunch of random marines training in Japan were shipped over and told to rescue some people with no intel as to whether or not the shipping crew were even still on the island and what kind of enemy resistance they'd face. They landed with three helicopters on two beaches thinking they were gonna fight like 10 guys but plot twist it was more like 100... time two. Also Buck at least has some idea and he commands the squad and even modifies their loadouts for them. It's not important for the squad to know what they're doing, only that they know how to use a shooty shooty bang bang. Buck, the senior leader, and Dare the advisor, do know. It should also be noted that the assumption for ODST and Halo 2 was this was an invasion force, which is why everyone was caught off guard when the ship left. Should also be noted that Mickey and Dutch probably would've still blown up the Oni site because if the data was obtained by enemy hands, you'd have to leave or defend every referenced location, change every operational frequency, scrap literally all of your plans, etc. It sounds really stupid but none of this is unrealistic. It's not the norm, but it's not unrealistic.

What makes it worse is that they could have still had the mission briefed to them in that manner and the story wouldn't have to change much. Like... ffs all the strife they went through would have happened regardless. The CAS ship would have still scattered them all, they still would have had to deal with the problems each of them ran into at the sight of their landing zone. Reminded of Saving Private Ryan. Yeah the mission is simple: Save Private Ryan. It's the frigging title! But look how much extra BS nonsense they had to go through to accomplish their goal. Or maybe a less fictionalized event. Osama Bin Laden's assassination conducted by the closest thing we have to ODSTs irl. Simple mission and I doubt none of them expected to have their helicopter crash in the way it did. Granted they did get a briefing albeit last minute and even still they had to capitulate to all sorts of shenanigans and escapades. Swinging back to ODST yeah they probably still would have had to deal with a lot of nonsense sidetrack regardless of whether or not they would have been briefed, though perhaps not as much.

As it seems everyone is forgetting what branch Dare was working under at the time, I will remind you: *MOTHER F'N ONI* ONI sent Dare on this suicidal mission, and probably ordered her to take over the one ODST squad that was gonna make a drop right over the target zone as her means to complete said mission. The entire stiff attitude from Dare felt very forced to me, especially with her relationship with Buck. She wasn't happy with this plan, she hated putting Buck and the guys in danger, but you can't exactly tell ONI to shove it without them sending a spartan assassin after you. (I'm looking at you Locke). You can also bet your ass ONI knew her relationship with Buck, but still made her keep a tight lip cuz, ya know, their called the UNSC *spooks* for a reason. But hey, your doing ONI proud by using Dare as the scapegoat she was meant to be. If the mission failed, it was her fault and ONI finds a replacement for her. If it succeeds, ONI gets the floaty boi while Buck, the boys, and Dare get the mission success credit. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if ONI met them back on thd ship and slapped a shit load of red tape in their faces). Gonna be honest, I'm disappointed Hyperion. Not once was ONI mentioned in your video, when I'm almost positive ODST states Dare is a member of ONI somewhere in the game. Seriously, ONI allowing "honest communication"? That's funny.

@@EthanRom You should try Wolfenstien: The New Order. It's basically as close as you can get to being an ODST, with gameplay that's a fine line between Doom's aggression and Halo's strategy, and with almost all of the game doable with stealth.

I just got the point again where she punches Buck, who to be fair i dont even like. But was like WTF, so I searched Halo 3 DARE sucks to see if others hated her as much as I did LOL
@zaymac11710 ай бұрын
Yeah Dare is such a disappointing character that people barely talk about how bad her character was in ODST like why would you choose her over Kat, Cortana, foehammer, and even Miranda Keyes like come on. But yeah the more I replay this game the more I dislike Dare since she barely has any screen time and she's even unplayable in the campaign.

Yeah but didn't all the other ODST's that were still aiming for the carrier die?

I wish they actually showed more of Buck's homosexuality instead of clipping it out. While they removed the scene where Veronica reveals her manhood during the love scene with Buck, Bungie later announced this to be canon but because of backlash from fans they only tell about it in written lore. I cant wait for the 343 remaster! It's going to rock! 😎

Wait now I’m confused. So let me get this straight. Buck is gay. Veronica is a trans woman. Halo 3 ODST originally had a nudity scene they removed. Or at the very least they showed a character’s genitals. Did I get everything? This is very confusing. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
@thomasbane02 жыл бұрын
@@shadowgearaudio293 very confusing for all of us to be sure. But it makes for a wonderful modern telling of the Halo universe as 343 had envisioned. What a wonderful time to be alive. Though you and i may be a bit perplexed, neither Buck or Veronica are strangers to uncertainty (mainly pertaining to their sexuality, of course) I cant wait to preorder the remastered version. Many perceive Cortana's menstrual episodes to be of paramount importance on the topic of Halo story. But I, like many other fans of 343's Halo universe, yearn to see such stunning visuals of this forbidden romance between the two fantastically written homosexuals who are Buck and Veronica. 343 for the win! 💪🍆

Dare is one of the most ignorant characters of all time. I love ODST but Dare nearly ruined it with her stupidity. Unprofessional and terrible leader.
@zaymac11710 ай бұрын
And she is also an annoying feminist and hypocritical as hell no wonder why they she did not return in modern halo games. I should call her Captain feminist dare.

Wait, what? Why are you stating what was already stated, and then painting it as bad writing? She didnt care about the team because the carrier was never the mission it was vergil and on top of that shes ONI. Id expect you to understand that since you like 343 and every halo they made.
@AscendHyperion4 жыл бұрын
I am taking control of an ODST squad minutes before a major military action. Being the new commanding officer I should: A) Provide this squad with the bare minimum information about their new mission. To establish a directive baseline or B) Flirt with my Ex-Boyfriend until we deploy and then act shocked several hours later when my relatively simple objective is incomplete and my commandeered squad is nowhere to be found I love the irony in your comment too. You claim I'm merely restating the obvious and then retort that the real reason did what she did was... THE OBVIOUS!! Oh man! 😂 And then you cap it off with "NUMBER COMPANY BAD!! 😠" Textbook. I love it.
@lofiseeker17904 жыл бұрын
@@AscendHyperion well vergil was not the obvious it is what drove the story forward. Her being a bad leader has less to do with bungie and the game odst and more with her character, so if you would have criticized her character that would have made sense.
@AscendHyperion4 жыл бұрын
You're right. It has everything to do with her character. Who wrote her character? Bungie. For what game? Halo 3 ODST Why are you trying to needlessly isolate these things? I don't even think I critique Bungie's writing directly in this video. I focus on how her actions affected the plot.
