The TRAGEDY of the Gungoose: Halo's Most Complex Vehicle

Over Halo's almost 20 year history, no other vehicle has been as dangerous yet as docile as the Gungoose. For this reason, it must fail. This is the untold story.

The Gungoose was the original concept for the Mongoose, intended to release in Halo 2, not Halo 3. Ten years later, the Goose returned in Halo 2 Anniversary, but to nowhere near the expected glory. In this video I explain how the Gungoose is actually the single most dangerous vehicle in Halo's sandbox and why 343 was forced to weaken this new/old design.

personally, I think the more the merrier, and it should instead come down to map design... Don't have too many vehicle types occupying the same niche in the same map. Have some maps use warthogs, others, regular or gun mongooses, but rarely if ever on the same map. Maybe add some rarity to it, like way more common mongooses over specialized gun gooses. I think the mongooses would be better relagated to smaller maps where a warthog would struggle because it's too cramped, but it's not too small for ghosts and gooses. And then balance the gun goose to be slightly less effective than the ghost. There should be a penalty for the ability to carry a passenger.

honestly, I actuly think the grenande launchers from H5s version should be kept. if ya gat a direct hit its a 1-2 shot kill, abd brust damage like that really helps when you cant turn on a dime like with the ghost, sense ya only have to be lined up for a split second.

I have a few ideas to keep the ghost, mongoose, and warthog viable. Make the gungoose a power-vehicle, so there’s only one gungoose per team. It would be like the tank, when it blows up it takes a minute to spawn in. Change up the mongoose. Make the mongoose faster than the gungoose and add a jump ability to it, because honestly the mongoose is a terrible vehicle and needs something to help it stand out more. The ghost is fine where it is. If it really needs a buff, then add an increase to turning speed. The warthog is a classic, I a small buff to it would be flag holders can use their main weapons in it, unlike other vehicles. Making it more viable for flag runs but not killing the mongoose or gungoose.

The mongoose definitely has an important niche in the sandbox in my opinion. I've never viewed the geese as some kind of offensive power house nor should it be.

The gungoose was fixed: it's called the mongoose. The mongoose has a sandbox niche by being accessible. There is always a mongoose at both bases in Valhalla because the need for mongooses is limited and also because the mongoose should have a faster respawn timer than the other vehicles. Because the need for mongooses, that means when they are needed, they are available. The mongoose was added to address the problem of map flow and getting players to the action. Think of it as a map design crutch almost to allow bases to be further away from each other. This is why it works so well for custom games. If you want to improve the mongoose, do the following -Make it faster at the cost of maneuverability -Make it so the driver can shoot one handed weapons -Make it so when you leave the mongoose it's as fast as possible, maybe even instant -improve driver protection -rear seat infinite grenades and ammo to incentivize passengers Then, not only does the mongoose fill its niche, it excels at it.

I think you're listing out the benefits of the Mongoose in the perfect world. Im not saying it's useless, but it's most def the weakest (from a utility standpoint) of all the vehicles in any game it appears in. As of now, all the Mgoose does is ironically, remove players from the actual action, by stripping their ability to fight away, all while dumping them into conflicts with a disadvantage, which just makes you an easy drop. Even if you get away, it's hardly to any major benefit. You just end up in an area where you're outnumbered and the avg player ain't gonna be able to flip spawns or do any REAL work. I'm hard pressed to recognize the Mgoose as a promotor of better "map flow". If anything, it's an awkward tag along. The raw, on-foot flow still dominates anything the Mgoose attempts, cause the Mgoose has no fight function. You either get ignored by an initial enemy or picked off.

@@AscendHyperion The benefit they listed was it's availability due to the larger quantity of mongeese and their quick respawn time. Having at least one mongoose ready at the base isn't a perfect world scenario, it's almost guaranteed at all times and that's an advantage. If you just need to get somewhere quicker, the mongoose is the lowest risk option, because taking the warthog or ghost will risk it getting destroyed and they take some time to respawn. I will say though the mongoose loses that niche in halo 4 and 5, sprint and enhanced mobility just makes it obsolete

It's small and nimble, and if you have a guy with a rocket launcher or something it turns into an effective hit-and-run vehicle too. In Halo 3 and Reach, the weapons players spawn with didn't have the same lethality as Halo 2A and 5, so while the passengers were exposed, a good driver could easily dodge most incoming fire.

To pop my head in this fairly old video: The regular Mongoose is the definition of a small map arena vehicle, something that thrives on maps like High Ground, where the warthog would simply be too big, and the ghost can't carry a passenger with the flag, oddball, etc. Not to mention the mongoose is used rather creatively in the campaign, for faster paced combat sections in smaller spaces!

What you could do in Halo 5 is (with that block on the front) add a point light with the lense flare effect set to ‘Sun’ so it blinds anyone that looks at you while you gun them down. I did this with a warthog. It’s hilarious.

There is much that can be done to the Mongoose. Like a mine-laying Mongoose variant, or one that can launch smoke / frag grenades from front & rear launchers. Maybe even the ability to latch onto a small utility trailer that can mount up to four more Marines on it. Or tow a portable gun torrent or a mounted anti-air/tank gun. Maybe one with a EMP device that can be used to disactivat all vehicles within say a 15 Mi radius. Rendering enemy Tanks, Warthogs, Banshees, and such useless for a minute (Including the Mongoose). There are so many awesome things that can be done to the Mongoose, other than mounting guns to the front.

What if the gungoose was treated as more of a glass cannon? Like it could have stronger guns and more rotation, but keep the same vulnerability of it, possibly even reduce its durability. These changes would separate it from the warthog and ghost due to how vulnerable it would be, but it could counter something like the scorpion with its high mobility and damage. Another idea is to add some tracking to the bullets of the gungoose so it could be more for a "bombing run" strat. Also, there are probably some problems with these changes that I haven't thought of.

Even if the warthog and gungoose seem to compete uneasily with each other when present in the same map, it can still be interesting to have both vehicles in the game. The trick is to put them on different maps, or allow vehicles to be replaced with custom map settings. Having some maps or game modes where the players are *forced* to drive the vehicle that would usually be less-preferred makes them stand out and gives them a different feel.

The mongoose is a scout/reconnaissance vehicle, it's sole purpose meant to get you and a passenger where ever you need to go quickly. It's not meant to be an offensive powerhouse, it's a rapid response quad bike designed for fast transport.

The Mongoose and Gungoose are there to help you reach points of interest easier, the fact that they can be used for combat is just a sidenote not a main feature. A really good example is Ghost Town in Halo 3, it allows you to reach the Rocket Launcher first

This might work: increase the fire rate, projectile hitbox, and range radius to compete with the hog, however have it lack armor or singler projectile damage like the hog. Also give it some protection like the ghost. Add a cooldown of 0.03-0.5 seconds and overheats after 12 seconds of constant fire, however lacks large protection like the ghost. The kill time should be 1.45 seconds without a passenger, just about a 0.05 faster then the ghosts kill time. Finally, only one of these kind spawns for both teams while you still have the options for a normal goose and its respawn time is 30 seconds. Call this Rec variant in 5: Wild Goose Chace.

The grenade launchers on the h5 goose I think was already perfect. Specialized it to either a feild artillery peice, and a hit and run attacks. Doesn't invalidate the ghost because the ghost can consistently sit and fight and has better maneuverability.

I’ve always thought it would be great if the Mongoose gave its driver and passenger a boost to their shields. Like, there’s a battery on the Mongoose that overclocks your personal shields, making it much harder to kill someone while they’re on it. (Maybe it functions like overshields) but if someone hops off, they lose those additional shields, and a skilled enough sniper could blast the battery (after it’s been exposed from vehicle damage) to blow it up, or just shut off the additional shields. On top of that, as long as your additional shields hold up, the battery protects the mongoose from being EMP’d. This “Shieldgoose” if you will, can then act as a fast and viable transport across the battlefield, while not making the Warthog any less viable. (This thing could be a MONSTER in Capture the Flag.)

The Mongoose's biggest problem is not actually the lack of guns, but the inability to splatter anyone despite being so fast. So, I would like to give the Gungoose a souped-up shotgun instead of those dinky little machine guns. Then it could use the shotgun to be able to pseudo-splatter enemies as well as giving it a little ranged damage. Maybe it could be a flak cannon or something like the Scattershot so it has a random but longer projectile range.

One thing I found odd about introducing the Mongoos and the Gungoos into the Halo sandbox was having that additional seat. Sure it mean there was an additional gun but it was just meant that you needed an additional player to get more effectiveness out of it. Like in Halo 3 when your trying to take down the two scarabs without any air support. If you are driving a Mongoos it takes longer, if you leave the driving up to the AI then it's simply going to circle around randomly and might drive you over a cliff. The Gungoose would have been an interesting introduction at that point simply because the AI drivers could deal with the ghosts while you take cover in the ruins and work your way towards the crippled scarab. It would have been interesting to be able to take over one Scarab and take out the other then sabotage the one you pilot on your way out.

I feel like a sensible solution would to be to allow the driver to fire certain weapons one-handed, like pistols, the plasma rifle, the SMG. It could allow for the driver to still protect himself, and open up combos with the passenger, I.e. driver with plasma pistol to EMP a vehicle, passenger hits it with an explosive weapon.

How I would handle a 'gungoose' is something like a slingshot motorcycle (a motorcycle with two wheels at the front, shaping it like a slingshot). You'd have the driver in the center protected by glass from the front and steel in the back, with a turret mounted above the rear wheel. This turret would be weaker than a Warthog's turret, but stronger than small arms fire, approximately matching the Ghost in utility. This new vehicle, looking somewhat like a coiled snake about to bite, would be designated "The Rattlesnake" (aka, the Rattler) by the UNSC's Marine Corps. Its main purpose is recon and supporting infantry on the ground against lightly armored air and ground targets. Its turret can be aimed in 360° independent of where the vehicle is aiming, allowing it to fire anywhere the user can see. This gives it some great utility over the Ghost, so there has to be a downside: for a lightly armored vehicle, the Rattlesnake has a fairly large profile, almost matching the size of a Warthog and only a little bit faster. This means that it is one of the easiest light vehicles to hit with something like a plasma grenade or rocket launcher, making it a bit more vulnerable than a standard Mongoose or Ghost. It would also be slower than the Ghost, so while it can outgun the Ghost against air targets, it cannot outrun the Ghost. The actual weapon the Rattlesnake carries can be anything from an MG to a smaller Guass Cannon to a Railgun, depending on what the UNSC is expecting to face in the next fight

I'm gonna blow your mind: Mongoose is Sprint for Halo 3. . . . That's right, Mongoose is the "get across the map quick" option in Halo 3, and even zips across a map faster than sprint in Reach, 4, and 5. They should have doubled down on that aspect of they wanted it to be more viable. So how would I make it more viable? Allow the Mongoose to be mounted faster, and give you two ways to dismount. By pressing X like normal, or A to perform a super jump high speed dismount that launches you forward and into the air. Akin to a gravity lift. Heck, maybe make a long jump dismount with B and a high jump dismount with A. When you dismount the Mongoose, you should also ready your weapon just a bit faster than normal so that you can charge into battle and engage with enormous speed. Of course you'd have to tune all of this, but that's the gist of the mechanics to fix the Mongoose.

If you have good aim and are familiar with operating the goose itself, you can actually successful dole out a nice killing spree. I actually have majorly more success in the gun goose than I do with any other vehicle other than tanks, and even that comparison isn't a too far off vehicle in terms of getting kills, because the gun goose is much more maneuverable, which makes dodging something like a skewer much easier than with a tank, and thus survive longer. I myself have a record of 11 kills in a single ride on the goose, NOT a cumulative kill count split between numerous times on it.

And here I go with my concept : The EMPgoose. The pilot has a rechargeable ability to throw an EMP blast around him (same effect as H2A Bloodline bases EMP effect). It doesn't put the goose as more agressive, but serves a better support role. It's not much of an improvement, but it Can definitely help a team. Imagine a suicidal goose against a scorpion/wraith, juste rushing to disable it for a short period, maybe enough time for a Spartan laser (backseat ?) to kill it. Imagine a tag team rushing for the flag, you can just EMP the hogs/ghosts on the ennemy sife before leaving, making you the fastest moving stuff for a short time, enough to avoid getting shot at while fleeing ! I'm sure the goose Can get support functions that can definitely make it better

Redesign: the shotgoose. Like the gungoose, but it has shotguns on the front that shoot in a flat, duckbill pattern. I think this would create a fun hit and run vehicle that doesn’t exist.

I've seen other comments offering how to go about uping the Mongoose/Gungoose's utility, one way would be to have a mongoose with more armor as proposed in the video, as then the mongoose has a much different utility than the warthog, it becomes the objective snatcher. Having two people ride in, the person on the back can still use a weapon, and once they reach the objective, trade that ability for being able to get away with the flag, as usual. I think this works as a solution because it still lets the warthog have the role of a mobile turret, and gives the mongoose a reason to be used. That being said, it may need more armor or some sort of shield you turn on or off, perhaps a version of armor lock for the mongoose, as a way to skillfully deflect rockets or other vehicle killers. That being said it would have to be like armor lock in that it only lasts a few seconds and locks the driving controls, whether to allow it to keep moving with whatever momentum was built up or causing a hard stop is a difficult decision, as each adds skill/utility to it. Have a warthog chasing you? Activate armor lock so it ramps off you or crashes. About to make it to the base but something starts gunning you down? Activate armor lock and skillfully crash it into the base where it can be safely delivered.

I personally believe the Gungoose cannot work because of it's departure from Halo's fundamental combat mechanics. Halo's combat is designed to be more drawn out. A dance. This allows players to actively use their surroundings and movement to their advantage. Strafing and pivoting are key to combat. That is why the Ghost works as a single occupant vehicle. It mimics Halo's core combat design. It can strafe and pivot. That's why the Warthog gunner works. They can pivot while the drive acts as their "strafe." The Gungoose cannot strafe or pivot. It can only attack and move in one direction: forward. As you showed, that means players have a small window to attack. This goes against Halo's drawn out combat dance. In Halo 5, it appears the idea was to avoid the dance by making the Gungoose launch two powerful grenades in a "hit and run" design style. However, this then begins to break the balance of vehicles. Quick kill times are generally reserved for the slower vehicles, which goes against the inherent design of the Mongoose. Either way you cut it, it just doesn't look like the Gungoose can fit into a proper niche within the sandbox.

What if in exchange for making the guns actually good, you took away the passenger seat? That would solidify it as a skirmisher like the Ghost, but the Ghost would still be competitive due to being able to strafe, move faster with Boost, and having a generally easier time keeping the guns on target. It wouldn't replace the Warthog either due to not having a extra seat for flag running.

Imo adding some sort of unique ability would make the gungoose/mongoose more attractive. For example, adding a short range shield burst (maybe a little OP) , or making the weapon more fitting (dual shotguns for CQC combat on the goose) would give it a more defined role, rather then it being the “Point A to point B” type of vehicle.

This video is excellent, basically sums up everything you need to know about the Gungoose. Personally I think the Halo 5 Gungoose is decent, I have managed to get kills with the grenades before and if one pops up in the random vehicle spawn I'm often confident I can get at least one kill and use it to get to a base before I dump it. If I could make my own changes to the Gungoose I'd probably go for something similar to what the Halo SPV3 mod did with it, in that it has two mounted Assault Rifles as the primary weapon and slow-reloading grenade launchers as the secondary, and possibly include the infinite grenades for the passenger from Halo 5's ONI Goose.

Add a little cover for the driver, and maybe have a system of defensive or offensive deployable item, like mines, or an AoE EMP. Its still unarmed, but EMP rum-bys on bigger vehicles require skilled driving and a solid opening in defenses.

The gungoose should have shields mounted on top of the guns like the Halo Reach/4 mounted guns. That way your head is still partially exposed, unlike the ghost, but the gungoose has an overall smaller silhouette since it doesnt have “wings”

The Gungoose is the most valuable tool to learn in Halo 5. Even the base model is totally based. Simply assess the battlefield and time your shots and you can get 8 to 30+ kills with the gungoose in big team games. Back when i was good at Halo i could carry my team with the gungoose every single time. It became central to my skillset and everything else i used to be the best at became secondary or superfluous to the gungoose. I've got killomanjaros with the gungoose. Nothing better.

In Halo CE there is a custom map named BigAss, and there is a gungoose with a mortar instead of that turrets. And, it's funny to use, a little more effective.
