I completely understand what she is saying. It took me a long time to gather my thoughts on Allegiant. I cried for days, I was depressed, it was awful. Reading about your favorite character dying is not fun. At the same time though, I think this was the ending her character kind of... deserved? It's not the fact that she died, or the fact that she never got a long happy life. Tris was ALWAYS down on herself, and she never felt like she was selfless enough, or that she was this or that. She looked up to Caleb in Divergent before she chose Dauntless, she thought THAT was the true meaning of selflessness; the things she watched Caleb do for other people. She learned at the end of Allegiant what true selflessness really is, and although it broke my heart, it was beautiful at the same time.

I was devastated when Tris died. I mean how many bullet wounds did she survive, how many wars and serums did she fight against (even the death serum!) I think to kill Tris from a bullet wound from a random character was wrong. She could have sacrificed herself instead of Caleb but still made it out alive. A terrible ending for such a fantastic trilogy I think. Also Four didn't deserve to lose Tris either.

@karmichaelblue9 жыл бұрын
What she means by doing Tris justice is not to make life fair for her. As an author you have to prove the protagonist's character growth by having him/her finish in the most relevant way. The major change in Tris series-wise is that she, as Roth mentioned, learns the difference between being an adrenaline junkie who craves self-sacrifice versus being genuinely brave and selfless. When Tris sacrificed herself for Caleb it was a last-resort scenario in which she proved her story of development. If Tris had lived happily ever after we would not have seen this--she never would have shown that she would sacrifice herself for the right reasons because the opportunity would not come. Something essential that is often overlooked by readers of Allegiant is the part at the end when Tobias goes on the zip-line and spreads her ashes across Chicago. This perfectly wraps up Tris's story--it is a symbol of her divergence. When her ashes are scattered over the city it demonstrates that she can't be categorized into a box, she can't be kept inside an urn or a jar. Had she not died Roth never would have had the opportunity so include such a significant, symbolic wrap-up for one of the most heroic protagonists of all time. Also important to note is that the series is really all about Tobias--Roth even said she originally created the story in his perspective but decided to instead tell his story through Tris. There is a certain level of character development in Tobias that would have been left untouched without her dying. Tobias almost decided to take the easy way out and take the serum to forget her. When he didn't that showed an enormous strength in who he had become. He had to learn that pain is not something you should ignore in life. Not with Tris's death, not with Evelyn's abandoning and betraying him, and not with Marcus's abusing him. I was so impressed with his choice to be brave and confront his adversity that it brought me to tears when I read it, many more tears than I cried for the scene where Tris died. It was so much more powerful than a sunshiney ending. It testified strength of will, that life goes on, that we all need to be brave and tackle our fears and our pain. Sorry to rant, but it really bothers me when readers misunderstand an author's genius and then act like the author doesn't know anything or just wants to make people angry. It wouldn't have made much sense to give Tris OR Tobias the cliche fairy tale ending. Kudos to Roth for being one of the few YA authors to be honest about plot necessities.

I was so upset when i read the book. And I read whay tobias felt, it made my cry even more. Im not not gonna say anything nasty cause it's the author's choice what happens. I think the main reason Tris shouldn't have died is the fact that she's only 16. Realistcally you would have a 16 year old knowimg about sacrifices and scarificing themselves. I also think that the least she could've done is let her see tobias. I actially wished it was a happy ending and everything. I dont expect veronica to make another story but i can hope that the producers wont kill tris in the movie. It would be greatbif someone wrote an alternate ending online that could cheer us up.

Lovatic123 actually no. if anything the ending was the only good point in that long ass book. It was really well executed and made sure we as the readers knew without question that this was always Tris's story, even in death. It was always just about her. The story was always centred around her, her thoughts, how her existence alone was causing disarray in her home, how that affected her, and how she had an influence on the characters around her, and what they'll do to either protect her or kill her. It's about her learning about selflessness, and ideologies about bravery, and it's about her learning to know when the line between bravery and stupidity just doesn't matter anymore. with that course it was only realistic that she'd die in the end, there was no risk involved.

Everyone is allowed to have their own feelings about the book. I personally loved the first two books. I especially loved insurgent. I found four to be kind of bossy and controlling and I found Tris to be a bit naïve and self sacrificing to an extreme extent. I understood both of their frustrations with each other. I can see why four would be irritated with Tris, but at times I found him sort of one sided. Like when he was mad because she did not share things with him like Wills death. Yet he kept secrets and made his own choices as well. He would say things to Tris in such a flat out way, but I liked that feisty way about him. Like the way he threatened to dump her and the way he just straight up said If I forgive my mom then you better as well. It was like damn he is kind of brutal, but not to a crazy extent. It was attractive to me yet frustrating. Weird, right? They had realistic personalities, they were not perfect. At times I was frustrated with him and her, but that’s what I liked. However, I hated the third book with a passion. Changing the flow by making it from dual perspectives turned me off. I’m a fan of dual perspectives, but not when it was not the original formula because it changes the vibe and style of the books. I fall in love with books and they become part of me, so when the vibe completely changed it was almost not the same book anymore and I hated that. I also hated the ending. We fall in love with these characters and I felt cheated by the ending. It was like it was written just to be different and add shock value. I prefer a happy ending to a series like this one. I’m going to give an example from another book. The way twilight ended left me with a good taste in my mouth and a positive experience. I left the theater and the reading of the book feeling GOOD. I cried happy tears, that ending was off the chain. You walked away feeling so great about it all and the years you invested. That’s what people love, for this particular book you didn’t need a tragic ending. I wanted a pick me up not a bring you down. However, I still love the first two books and if the third had stayed truer this would have been one of my fav series period. I get that Tris had always been self sacrificing, but I wish she could have grown as a person. That part of her was a little overboard and simple minded just like four felt it was. I feel she did not learn and grow up a bit. To me that was not an example of being true to Tris it was a BIG MISTAKE. A bad ending to such a great thing. That’s why it pains me so much because the books were creative and different. I will always love divergent and insurgent, but the author lost me with that last book. Killing Tris made probably 50% to 60% of people hate the ending and fall out of love. Yet keeping her alive would have made 90% to 100% of fans happy with the ending. So why kill her? The book is about the author, but the fans make it point blank. This just turned so many of us off and that was sad because this could have been one of the best trilogies ever.

@karmichaelblue9 жыл бұрын
green dino Actually I thought that was brilliant. Roth made sure Tris would live long enough to conquer the death serum, like all the other serums she'd conquered. The fact that she died not through a serum (which symbolized being under someone or something else's jurisdiction) she died through her own choice of self-sacrifice. When I read that I was taken away by the brilliance of it all. It showed the real meaning of the series, that we can control ourselves, overcome those who want to take advantage of us and use us, and we can choose to be brave when it's necessary.
@greenbean3819 жыл бұрын
Bethany Marie ok but it was still unnecessary for her to die end of story. like yeah im glad her death wasnt from a serum and all that but she didnt need to die in the first place. all the shit shes been through she dies from a single bullet? idk i think its dumb
@karmichaelblue9 жыл бұрын
green dino I mean you can certainly have your opinion that she shouldn't have died, but it's not end of story. Many people, including Roth and myself, believe for certain reasons that the death was necessary. For instance, her death was necessary for Tobias to fulfill his character development. Rather than choose to take the easy way out and forget her with the serum he decided to face the pain and learn to live with it. Sure, this could have been demonstrated in different ways, but nothing would come close to as powerful an example as with Tris's death. That's just my belief.

I did not understand Caleb's purpose in most of this story and near the ending I felt he wanted to prove himself so he should have been given a chance. I am so tired of people hating Veronica Roth for the ending. Look I am so upset that she killed Tris. But to be honest when u think about Tris you know she would have risked her life for Caleb. If Tris ended up alive it wouldn't make the book as good. She survived through the deaf syrum she had to die some how. But as I do under stand a powerful ending was needed could have done something powerful without killing her. But hey Veronica Roth brought us FourTris so instead of hating her we should be taking her. Also those Sheo shippers hating on Veronica maybe Sheo would have met because they were made for each other in this case they met because of Veronica in the first place. So as I said instead of hating her thank her. I mnow Veronica didn't cast them but she did write the book. Without the book there is no movie. Just rethink before hating her. The only thing that I wish they would change about the ending, when writing the script for the movie, is allowing Tobias to be by her side when she dies. Changing the time line of him leaving Chicago maybe. That is what made me feel the worst; the fact that he had to her about her death from someone else and never got to say goodbye.

It's not that I hated the ending or how it was written. The writing was beautiful and if Tris had to die, it would be the perfect way to write it. But I just didn't want such a strong character to die because of how emotionally attached I am to her and her life.

But now Tobias either has to live his life as a loner, or love someone else?? And a better ending?? What about her having a great life!! It is an amazing book, but I don't think Veronica should have killed Tris off.

(Its pretty late to be part of this fandom but who care) Tris deserved a better future but she couldn't have lived with the regret of her brother going. Through the books tris is becoming more selfless at times and in the end it was the best part where she showed a selflessness and it was beautiful in a way so it's good she died cuz she couldn't have lived with the regret. (Very very Off-topic but o well) I don't think the death of Marlene, Lynn and uraih was important I think veronica killed them to torture us I mean I understand the death of tris but why them and I also think that she gave Peter the memory serum because she didn't know how to put Peter's feelings in words

'you have to let bad things happen to a character so they could grow' right. a gunshot in the head and dying on the spot totally helped her grow as a person. real character development. i wasnt sure how i felt about the ending, but watching the interviews im sick of veronica behaving like she did her a favour by killing her off

What beautiful books, I was very sad and am still very sad about Tris dying... Like, I literally had to take work off the next day because I couldn't hold myself together... Yes, I know... Ha. But really, it was beautiful, I would have liked a different ending, but this is the ending we got... I still LOVE the books and I can't wait to see what else comes... I loved 'Four' and I feel like that helped me to cope a little bit with Tris' death! Maybe Veronica should write a self help book about dealing with the death of Tris. Haha.. But seriously.

I think Veronica made a very brave decision about what she’s done and it was definitely interested character and it shows how she believes that selflessness and bravery are truly not that different but on the other hand it took me quite a lot of time to digest the fact that she had indeed died and I think my feelings are so much more with Tobias how he copes with the ending but overall I think it’s brilliant you know not everybody’s gonna have the hunger games of the Twilight ending

I don't like the end of allegiant AT ALL. But it makes so much sense. I mean. Just think about it. Tris would never had let her brother die. She's Abnegation enough to save her brother. And Dauntless enough to sacrifice herself to achieve her goal. I mean she kinda forgot about being Erudite on that one. But. That's her. That's Tris. And she died for the most beautiful cause. I mean, whether you like it or not... That's one of an achivement of a character

i've always thought one of the main characters might die,but i thought it would be Four.I didn't necessarily hate Tris dying,but i hated the way it happened...so she SURVIVED the death serum and then got shot by a man in a wheelchair,really?That's so not dauntless,had it been any other moment in the other books she would have done the job and fought her way out of there at the same time,so that kind of spoiled it a bit for me.But i loved the 2 short chapters where Four describes seeing her before oficially meeting her,that was beautiful.

[Spoiler] I think I'm the only person who loved the end. That was the only way that the book could end. I loved Tris more when she did this sacrifice. Idk why but I think a good end for a hero of a book is to die for other. And I know if one day I write a book I'm gonna kill the hero, that the only end that I can imagine. (Sorry for my bad english, I'm french )

Yeah I really agree with Lulu Person there should've been a part where they got married than she died so at least her death stone would say: Beatrice Eaton Prior not just Beatrice Prior

I know that people tend to hate the book because Tris died and so many extensive reasons. But I feel like her death was realistic, in a sense of it being an attribute to book. It displays the concept that, 'Hey, even the best people don't receive their happy endings'. And I feel like that's what made the book unconventional, in a way. It wasn't some magnificent, sugarcoated ending that was purely made to please everyone. If anything, as people who don't live in a fictional world, I'd expect us to understand that not endings are happy nor necessarily satisfying, even to those deserving of it.

I think my problem with Alligent is that is seemed disconnected to the first two books. I agree that to kill off the main character when she's 16 sucks, but if she had to die it could have been written better. First off I think book 3 should have remained consistent with Tris POV and not to confuse the theme with Tobias POV. Tobias could have provided the last few chapters after Tris death and the books would have continued to be Tris' story not Tobias'. Second I thought her being shot in the back was a horrible choice, hell the girl had been shot multiple times in all the books ans survived, then a seemingly insignificant character shoots her in the back. I felt if she needed to be the one to die for her brother and for her people, she could have seemed to be immune to the death serum, been successful in releasing the memory serum, her friends could have returned they all could have celebrated. Then after the "party" she and Tobias could have been alone together when she told him she wasn't immune to the death serum but it was taking her longer to die. They could have had a "good-bye" moment. It still would have sucked that she died, but she could have told him she wasn't leaving him by choice but that he needed to understand why she had to be the one to sacrifice herself. I think for me it was the lack of closure between her and Tobias' that left me disappointed. I loved his POV in the last few chapters and I loved how he 'flew' on the zip line to spread her ashes. I just felt her being shot in the back was anti-climatic and very disconnected from the first two books.

I actually understand the ending of Allegiant, and I'm entitled to my opinion just as you are entitled to yours. Don't come hating on me just because I think something different than most people. Tris had been talking about sacrifice in the first few books without actually really *knowing* what the full meaning of it was. Now I understand that Caleb is a cowardly jerk, but Tris' sacrifice stay true to her character. Sometimes I think it is unfair that she died and stuff, but it's just my opinion.

Guys why are you hating on veronica? Killing tris was a good thing Tris accomplished everything she wanted she knew caleb would not survive the death serum but she did only to get shot by david Why i like the ending is because im sick and tired of every story having the two main characters have kinds and live happily ever after. Although i was very sad about her death i liked the ending. Because not every story every person on earth gets a happy ending and thats what books should teach

I hate how she shifts her eyes and makes a face when she says "people are allowed to form opinions on it," then she lights up when she says "or to LOVE it/ get enthusiastic about it" subtle, but she doesn't really care about the people criticizing the ending and writes them off as if its their problem

as ive read spoilers abt the ending of allegiant ,and as im listening to this lady,she gives me a lousy writer vibes like, "oh well since its alrdy ended, i wldnt mind my readers feel abt what way i'll end this book now" like she alrdy gave up after a few pages ,and seems like "oh well, important thing is ,im done, i wont care less bout they say" ik tris died and its clearly understandable but to gave the characters the ending which doesn't suit to the journey those characters had is what's disappointing, and a huge waste, like srsly? what happened to those lines she gave to tris and four, knowing both of em stick to their words as thats the characters she portray from the whole series, but she just casually ended these characters ,shallow and lazy ending , i honestly cant keep this kind author who just lazily cutted the ending by "i don't care what they think on my book i'll end it anyway"
