Some tips that might make sailing a bit easier for you, from someone who has spent way too many hours in this game: Never drop your anchor unless it is an actual emergency and you are going to crash. Slow down by raising your sails. When your sails are raised, you still have the option of turning. If you are attacked by a ship while your anchor is down, it takes precious seconds getting it back up again. It makes you a sitting target. I can't tell you how many Brigantines I have sunk because they were anchored and couldn't turn to fire their cannons at me, so I just sailed around behind them or directly in front of them. When raising anchor make sure all available players help so it goes faster. When fighting a sloop, the weakest point of the ship is the lower front side of the ship. It takes the longest to get to, and the holes will all be on their lower deck. If you shoot the back of the ship you are risking putting holes on their middle deck, which essentially don't hurt them at all until they actually have water up to that level. Use your harpoon to get loot from beaches or from the water. Jumping in and carrying loot is a huge time waster. The white and red flag that sloop was flying is the alliance flag, meaning they wanted to create a fleet with you. This can sometimes be a trick, however. Some players will raise the alliance flag to gain trust and then sink you when you leave your ship. Allied ships get 100% of whatever they sell, and you gain 50% of whatever they sell. This goes for all ships in an alliance. It is a good way to make a lot of money if you feel you can trust the other ships. Inactive forts (the islands with all the watch towers all around them {they are active if they have the skull above them}) are extremely good places to stock up on supplies. Whenever I am short on supplies, or whenever I first log in, inactive forts are the first places I go. The barrels sitting around on the forts are usually chock full of cannonballs, bombs, food and wood. I usually make sure I have a full stack of 99 wood and cannonballs before I even start my adventure, because they go FAST. The larger your ship, the faster you chew through wood and cannonballs (more people firing/repairing).

Friendly advice: Try to control your sails so that you don't have to anchor (or ramp up any islands) The Brigg is the fastest ship, most of the time you can manoeuvre better if you only use the main sail. When you have holes, you sink faster if you travel faster, so it's best to try slow down during combat when you can. TLDR: Slow down :P

Ok. Couple tips from a Legend. 1. You don't need to use the ancor when you see the name of the island raise sails and go in slow. This means you don't need to raise ancour and lower sails if some thieve shows up. Sails are faster. 2. Always carry 3 food 2 planks and 5 balls per crew mate. That way if you do board you can take thier stuff or better if you have a storage box take that with. If its empty they gain nothing if you get it back full you gain everything. 3. Sharks are food. Once the enemy crew are dead kill the sharks. 4 delegate. All crew should have 2 tasks that are thier tasks. Be it sails, Bailing, repairs or stearing. If you are captain your place is at the wheel deligate a navigator while you man the wheel and rear sail. That way you always have the wind you need. This is but some of my wisdom, may the sea be always under you and never you under it.

Btw the first chapter where they blew up the ship it wasn't sabotage, with one of the updates came clusters of debris in the ocean that have supplies and sometimes those supplies can spawn an explosive barrel, and if you hit that barrel with your ship it will blow up, what I'm assuming happened was you hit a barrel and it created a chain explosive that caused your barrel to explode.

I’member me an’ my friends took on about 3 ships. A sloop, a brig and a gally, none of which teamed up. So in a brig ourselves and because this was 3rd hour sailing we had enough supplies so we went right to battle and actually managed to not sink. And it’s not like we sank them solo as a free for all was spreading damage equally but that’s not even the story, so we repair and I’m thinking we’re gonna do a nice sail out of here while the gettings a good. And theses clowns I call my friends when the brig and gally peaked the horizon at full speed, they... they decided full speed toward only for first mate to anchor and stick us while the gally rammed us into the other brig. Sank in about 7 seconds and lost the skull forts loot that started the scuffle. Haven’t played since.
