This is one of my favorite bikes so far on the channel. It's just such a clean and original example. I was so fortunate to find some original spec parts to restore this thing back to how it was originally produced and sold in 1993. A true survivor and cult classic bicycle - WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME. It's really a shame it's a size too small! What a keeper!

I have one of these in the biggest size they made! The purple is soooo good. Unfortunately hardly any original parts except the stem and bars, but I’ve made it my own and I truly love this bike, one of the best riding I’ve ever had. 26x46 surly extraterrestrial tires fit great with fenders on my mine. Thanks for the video made me wanna go ride my bike!

When I was stationed in Korea (1984 -1991) I trashed my Zeus drafting a truck out of the city. A pothole popped out from under the back of a truck and swallowed my front wheel. While I was between bikes a guy I rode with let me borrow his Bridgestone frame. I put all the Zeus parts on it and it got me through the next year until I got my Masi. Same color as that one. Had to be an early 80’s bike. Your video brought back memories. I like that you are vintage focused. I take my old Masi (I still ride it) to the Austin Veloway and nobody throws shade at it. Starting to go through my new (to me) Santana that I brought home yesterday. I wish I had your knowledge. That bike has some tricks that I’ve never seen before that I’m learning are standard for tandems. …like eccentric BB to tighten the front to rear chain. The frame is a little too big. I can ride it ok but top tube is right up to my crotch. Can I change wheels to 27”?

Greetings from West Michigan. I found your channel several days ago and I'm enjoying it. In the old days I used to work on our bikes, and the neighbor's bikes , and the ones I found in the trash. I loved doing that, I swear I did. We have matching Giant "Cyprus" bikes from 2004 when we retired and I keep them running. I'm now my wife's caretaker and I have to stay close, but I do have time for one of your videos now and then. Thanks for sharing what you do. We'll keep watching, and maybe send you some tacos... RG

My X0-2 ‘93 has mustache bars and thumbies on it. The stem is black mtb , Ritchey style , I can’t make out the manufacturer. I squeezed, just barely, some 26 x 2.3” Volummys on mine as a tester … they do clear but tighter up front, (temporarily borrowed from my ‘85 Stumpjumper). I agree, some 2.15”’s would be a more easy fit. My good friend actually gave me this bike, (he’d be a better friend if it was a purple one!… Lol!). He generously knew I was looking for an MB-1 , but after overhauling it, I can’t let it go of the 2! If I find an MB-1 or an XO-1 I might let the 2 go, but it’s easy to keep these around if you are not pressed to give it up.
@Korina42
@Korina42 Ай бұрын
Try some Maxxis DTHs; the lighter sidewalls, if you can find them, are 2.15" and ride fast and supple.
@michaelaiello9525
@michaelaiello9525 Ай бұрын
@@Korina42 THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GONNA DO! PS: i was also going to try some Maxxis Ikons, do you know how those compare to the DTH's with regards to weight and roll? I was gifted the used set of IKONS and have not used them because I prefer slicks, but I think the IKONS are supposed to be relatively light and swift
@Korina42
@Korina42 Ай бұрын
@@michaelaiello9525 I haven't tried the Ikons, but they definitely have more tread than the DTHs. I ride mine on sometimes pretty chunky pavement and some light gravel, and they're great. The tanwalls look super classy too.
@michaelaiello9525
@michaelaiello9525 Ай бұрын
@@Korina42yeah couldn’t fit the Ikons on the Bridgestone. Even though I trimmed the outer rows of nobbies the 2.2 ikon just has that flatter profile. So reluctantly I stole my Simwork Volummys for real for the Bridgestone and put the Ikons on the Stumpjumper, which has miles of clearance.. (literally could go 3” or more on the Stumpy.. but maybe someday a 650b conversion) . I would get the DTH’s but 💰.. for now I need to wait. If you get an opportunity tho, try the Volummys,.. they’re glorious! And if you have an XO.. the Volummys will fit too.. super supple.
@Korina42
@Korina42 Ай бұрын
@@michaelaiello9525 I lust after an XO, but the $$$$$$ is too much when I can even find one in small. The DTHs are on my '92 RockHopper, and I can't go any wider if I want to keep my fenders, which I do. The Volummys look nice; I'll keep them in mind for another build. Happy New Year!

My only "problem" with this conversion is, that it actually DOES belong in a museum now because it's nicer to look at than actually ride it, imo. Ergonomics have improved so much since 1993, especially with modern levers and short reach bars. I couldn't imagine myself to ride with those old bars and levers for longer than 10 min. to the cafe just to look cool, and the latter is certainly debatable 😅

I haven't used bar end shifters in a long time. When i first installed a set on a TT bike back in my racer days(early 00's), I had no idea you could take them apart to install them. I spent forever getting the starting just right so when I used the shifter to tighten the expander bit inside the ends, the shifter ended up in exactly the right spot. Ugh.

My 93 GT Tequesta had a similar conversion - came with wide mud tyres but I wanted mountain bike tough frame n components on a street bike and I think the wheels in 93 were still narrow n better suited to 1.5 light treads that can take 60psi. At one point it was my fitness blaster with a 52 tooth single front and close ratio 11-28 rear setup. Still going strong with thick but badly faded paint.

Nice time capsule. If I recall correctly the original brake cable were dia-comp not shimano. You might have got away unscrewing the cable adjuster on the headset to get that housing length but I was glad you re did the rear brake cable. My first Mountain bike was a Bridgestone MB-2 so the brand is close to my heart.

But too late to save them. A couple months ago I finally got my hands on a '89 MB3 which was a dream bike for early teens me which I'm doing a slow restauration on.

The yen became very strong against the dollar in the late 1990s and early 2000s as the Japanese economy boomed. Lots of Japanese bikes stopped being sold in the U.S. because the profit margin went away for the Japanese bike manufacturers. Trek and Specialized and Cannondale were also making really nice home grown bikes at the time. There were a lot of troubles in the U.S. market for Bridgestone, Shogun, Panasonic, Nishiki and others. Not keeping up with the Joneses also didn't help.

Thanks! Merry Christmas Bike Farmer and Family! Enjoy a couple of tacos on me. I am transforming an early 90s Raleigh Technium frame into something between a drop handle touring bike and my Giant Cypress (which I love) using a 1x11 Deore groupset with caliper brakes. The question I have is regarding wheels / tires. The original Technium came with 700c x 25's and are just too rigid for me (am in early 60's). I would like to move to something wider, so I did a test fit with my Cypress 700c x 38's and they were too large to fit in the frame. Since the 700c's are 622 MM, I was thinking of going 650b (584 mm) or 26 IN (559 MM) and probably 32, 35 or even 38 MM in width. Do you have any advice, thoughts, preferences, sage wisdom?? BTW, I just got my Bike Farmer "More Better Hey" from Santa - it looks great. You probably need a "I'm a Smug Turd" line to add to the merch - think it would sell!! Thanks for all...

Merry Christmas! I have the '93 XO-3 and that has the same Japanese made Ishiwata tube lugged frame and fork. There was a minute, as in really, really minute difference in frsme geo between tge 2 and 3. I think it's like 2 mm difference in the top tube or something like that. The 3 is an interesting machine. It has a mustache bar, but it has 22.2 ends, so it takes mountain bike controls. It comes with Deore DX thumb shifters, but slightly lower end Exage deraiilleurs. Wheels are single wall Araya on Exage hubs. Overall, it has lower spec parts that are perfectly functional and none of that matters because it was still thoughtfully spec'd by Grant to be a great riding machine. I've got a set of Simworks The Homage 1.9" tires and that is as wide as I'd recommend. The canti posts on these forks are spaced so narrow, you can't pass a wider tire through without deflating. I've seen people fitting Gravel King 2.1s, but it's a tight fit...but it looks cool on the INSTA! When I get a chance, I may try a set of Rene Herse Naches Pass 1.8.

I agree - The white bar tape seems inappropriate on that bike. So Grant Peterson is like the Bay area boys who started mountain biking . Except he is different. He is the man who created the gravel bike. There's a lot of us who heard his name in the past but never realized his historic significance. Happy New Year!

I like the white bar tape, complements the frame color, white frame stickers and silver bars. -Will not be bright white for long though.

@@jonmccormick8683 To each their own. It may look better when that bar tape gets sullied up.

Merry Christmas. Thanks for videos I do not get tired of watching. Speaking of tires, you said it still has the original 26x1.5 tires. How long can original tires be used safely? I just replaced the tires on a slightly later TREK 720 b/c I was afraid they would fail at an in-opportune time. Thanks again for the content.
