Have you considered leaving the coil on the plastic tube? One thing I noticed was that the car ran on a smooth surface while the battery rig is audibly bouncing around inside the copper coil. This could very likely be causing a reduction in travel times.
@davidburke41017 жыл бұрын
Well, it is a battle of the simplest possible train, I don't think it can get any more simpler than the bare coil.
@williamgreene48347 жыл бұрын
Joshua Carter, The magnets must touch the copper coil because the coil is powered by the battery and then the magnetic field in the coil drives the magnet/battery combo forward. The whole assembly makes a linear motor. A smoother connection between the two could make for greater speed and efficiency though.
@vincentoverney30447 жыл бұрын
What if the coil was left in the tube and some lubricant was added to make an almost frictionless surface inside and then have the coil powered by the battery to make the coil produce a magnetic field. Then the train could just be made of some conductor without a battery right? Then to increase the speed of the train just add more layers of coil to the tunnel. This would make the surface almost frictionless, hence more efficient and would increase the speed of the train to beat the car but would slightly increase cost.
@vincentoverney30447 жыл бұрын
Also, to increase efficiency over longer distances the coil could be removed midway between the beginning and end and the train could glide over an almost frictionless surface. Also, if the atmosphere was removed inside the tunnel there would be almost no air resistance. Or the train could just be shaped aerodynamically. Sorry for the ramble i'm just throwing ideas out lol.

the plastic is electrically insulating and hence the speed will decrease.

After a while, I've started to noticed too that westerners don't have as much patience or concentration as people from Asia. You know, it occurs to me that if you were to stretch this copper coil out into a large oval track, quickly drop the battery--mag-car into one end and close it again, you will have essentially created a very convincing perpetual motion machine that will run for a very very long time, at least until the battery runs out of charge. Furthermore, if you could have embedded magnets on the bottom of the same charge as the underside of this battery-mag-car, you could dramatically reduce the friction, too. I wonder just how fast something like that would move? Obviously, further experimentation is in order!
@samwillard5688 Жыл бұрын
Brushes would greatly facilitate frictionless motion in this case. Does the battery rotate through the coil if the magnets need to be touching the copper? Seems to be room for improvement and easy experiment. My heartfelt thank you to whomever made this video.

What happens if you run a current through the coil and then put the train through it?
@yoichihirose38068 жыл бұрын
It is possible to run the train. But, in such case, for example, you should be better to use a drained out battery (= empty battery). In addition, you should supply the electricity by using many batteries connected in series, and the total length of the connected batteries should be comparable to the length of the coil.
@yoichihirose38068 жыл бұрын
You might be better to use a steel pipe, rather than a drained out battery, because the internal resistivity of the battery is too high to induce the electric current into the battery. The internal resistivity is around 0.3 ohm for alkaline battery and it is larger than the resistance of the surrounding copper coil. Presumably, the best choice for the length and the diameter of the steel pipe is about 30~50 mm and 6~10mm, respectively. The weight of the pipe should be light enough to reduce the friction between the “new simple train” and coil. But, at the same time, the electric resistance of the pipe should be sufficiently smaller than the surrounding copper coil. These factor contradict each other. So, you should choose the diameter and thickness of the pipe carefully.

Because of friction I thought that the Simple Electromagnetic Train would lose every time against the mini car. The wind up motor of the car has a lot of stored up energy when wound to its max. This video proved my hypothesis wrong. It seems friction is not as much of a problem with this version of the train! Thank you for this video. I love learning things like this. Your Simple Electromagnetic Train has a lot of potential, and may even translate to very large scale, providing transportation for commuters and travelers.

Your numbers are kind of irrelevant, because we don't know the speed it had at the very end. It didn't travel at 8.975km/h.
@FrozenFrontiers7 жыл бұрын
My numbers are relevant if you care about the average mph or kph it traveled at to get from point A to point B. Otherwise, you are correct. My numbers do not give an indication of max speed reached during this demonstration.
@InfinityFidelity7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know. But let's say you're testing or researching a car. Then you care about the acceleration (usually 0-100km/h in x seconds) and max speed. No one cares about the average speed in a random a to b, because that doesn't really tell us much about the general performance of the car. That number will change if you change the distance traveled; acceleration and max speed won't. But sure, if you think the average speed in one test is interesting, whip out that calculator.
