I was in Bundoran years ago on a riding holiday. We rode along the beach to a pub for lunch. :) We’ve only done one coach tour and it was with Ulster Bus to the Cairngorms. We were based in Granton on Spey and had an amazing time . We were the youngest by far but everyone was friendly, accommodation and food were very good. Really enjoyed the Stena crossings too. Excellent site/touring schedule. Sadly Ulsterbus no longer offer tours.

Irish number plates follow the format DDD-CC-####. You’re right the first 3 numbers represent the year. 211 means the first half of the year 2021 (212 would be the second half), next one or two letters is the county followed by random numbers! Great video as always Mark!

There are some spectacular coastal views, Cliffoney Beach is amazing, with Classiebawn Castle (the former home of Lord Mountbatten) an imposing view when seen from Mullaghmore. LetterKenny is a real bottleneck, not helped by the crazy stopping schedule. With regards to the lack of railway links, it is planned to create a route between Derry and LetterKenny, but at the speed they develop rail routes in Ireland we'll probably be all brown bread. 😂

Yes, do try a coach holiday. There’s nothing not to like! It’s often cheaper than doing a similar trip yourself. I’d recommend using a big company like Caledonian or National Holiday because you get more choice, and maybe just a 3 or 4 day break first to see how you like it. And no you don’t have to eat soup every night 😂. You’ll get a choice whether it be brought to you, or buffet style. All depends on the hotel of course, which you can research first. But go for it!

The first 2/3 numbers on the plate indicate the year, I.e 211 for first 6 months of 2021, 212 for second 6 months. The letter(s) indicate county of issue, I.e D Dublin, DL Donegal, MN Monaghan. The last 4//5 numbers are consecutive when issued. So for example 211 D 46912 indicates a vehicle registered in Dublin in the first half of 2021.

The flags are to commemorate the Spanish Armada. Three ships were wrecked at Streedagh beach just outside the village. There is a little museum in the old courthouse and events with Spanish representatives etc. every year. The wreck sites were discovered in the 1980s and cannons etc. recovered. More was exposed by storms in 2015. The Armada’s demise isn’t celebrated in Ireland the way it is in the U.K., for obvious reasons. Grange is also the birthplace of Lola Montez, an interesting character.

Number plates are year/county/sequential registration. The first two digits indicate the year or registration and the third digit indicates first or second half of the year. The county is either one or two letters. The last digits are the order it was registered in. So “D” is Dublin, SO is Sligo, WX is Wexford, G is Galway, LM is Leitrim etc. if it’s a two letter code, it’s normally first and last but if there two counties with the same first and last (Waterford and Wexford or Kerry and Kilkenny) they used a letter from the middle of the name.
@richardbutler44883 ай бұрын
The interesting thing about the 1/2 after the 13 year is that it was introduced in 2013 as the government was worried that vehicle sales were going to be poor in 2013 due to people having a thing of the unlucky 🍀 number 13 😅 They kept it going then as it was popular with car dealers as in Ireland loads of vehicles used to be sold early in the year but there was very little new registrations in later months of the year. The newer system helped balance sales a little bit better over the year.
@Dreyno3 ай бұрын
@ The media focused on the “unlucky 13” thing but the second reason was the bigger issue. A glut of sales in the first half of the year and almost nothing after the summer. Both for the dealerships and the revenue.

@@irishmark2180: Thanks Mark, a shame it will have some unhappy memories as well with your grandad. I did go over there for a few days back in 2013 and we were recommended to go to Banna Bay. Driving up there I could clearly pick out one or two remnants of an old railway line in a place called, I think, Ardfert. @jasonsmith16783 ай бұрын
I think I may be right in this, but the number plate change in 2013 was a superstition thing, or dealerships wanted the opportunity to sell cars twice yearly, like what happened in the late 90's in the UK, the 13 reg may have been a problem, we in Ireland had a year 12 reg, but in 2013 we started to have 131 & 132 reg, plus also some county registrations were changed. The Limerick county reg (LK) was gone to a standard limerick county of (L) which was the city reg only before, also the Tipperary south (TS) and north (TN) was changed to a standard (T) for the whole of Tipperary.

You should have mentioned the locked toilet to the driver as someone probably forgot to unlock it. The last buses to a rural town are the first the following morning, as parked in unlocked yards the toilets are locked overnight. It may not have had its daily water fill and black tank empty yet is another reason if replacing a faulty bus to maintain a service. A cleaner would have gone through it overnight.

Bus Eireann is beyond useless at this point. Their service between Sligo/Letterkenny & Dublin/Letterkenny is now a standard half hour to one hour late on every single run - that's everyday of the week. As for the traffic in Letterkenny? well, it has been known for having the worst (and most corrupt) town council and planning for the past 50 years. Derry on the other hand is one of the finest cities in these Islands and easily the best city in Ireland. Best Pubs and Restaurants, great live music (Derry & Tyrone people are the finest singers and musicians in Ireland as a whole) and just a great place to spend an afternoon wondering about and admiring the architecture and history.

Another great video Mark. I can just about remember the railway station in Bundoran. I can vaguely remember travelling with my parents on the train from Dublin to Bundoran and then changing at Bundoran for Ballyshannon. As you say the station closed in 1957. After the station was closed the site continued to be used as a bus as a bus station. It is now used as a car park. In 2017, I visited Australia, I travelled by train from Melbourne to Geelong in the state of Victoria. When I exited the station in Geelong, the frontage reminded me of the entrance to Bundoran railway station.

Irish plates work like this sice 2012. Let's say the year of2 manufacture is 2022. From January to June. The reg would be 221. June to December 222. Before 2012. Only the year would be the 1st numbers. Let's say its a car from 1995. The middle letters represent the county. The longer set of numbers is an identification marker as to what number that car was when registered. So for Dublin. The reg would be eg. 95-D-2945.

Those traffic lights at the polestar roundabout are the pain, they were supposed to help, but make the traffic even worse. If you came in June, during the Donegal rally it can take an hour to get in/out of town due to all the petrol heads driving around showing off their cars.

You’re right about the reg number Mark. First 2 digits are the year and the third is the half of the year (1st or second half) So 211 would have been registered in the first half of 2021. The letters that follow are for the county of registration, D being Dublin. The third digit came about from Car dealerships being worried that sales would fall in 2013 as 13 would be considered unlucky so they added the extra number to combat any potential lost sales. It’s been there ever since! Great video as always!

Bus Éireann drivers are my pet hate, as consistently over the course of 50 years, they are rude, ignorant and unprofessional and I’ve noticed it even more in my 23 years living in the U.K. - they were bad enough in my childhood in the 70’s and 80’s, but they really have got much worse in the last 10 years alone - I’ve worked in supermarkets for 30 years in Ireland and the U.K. and their behaviour would be classed as gross misconduct, especially rudeness to customers, which in supermarkets is a dismissable offence - you must robustly challenge any rudeness you encounter and always report it to head office and go as high as possible because it’s just not acceptable - the fares are way too high and Dublin Busaras is a complete disgrace, it gives a very bad impression for visitors to Ireland, its total cringe

I use Bus Éireann and JJ Kavanagh's regularly from Carlow to Dublin Airport and back again; never had any issues whatsoever with any of the drivers of either company.
