THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
13-MAR-2024. An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800 (B738), registration N570AS, performing flight ASA1163 / AS1163 from San Francisco International Airport, CA (USA) to Portland International Airport, OR (USA) after departure stopped climb at 12000 feet, reported pressurization issue and requested return back. Every time when the pilot started transmission there was a very loud squeal in the cockpit. Later, during the descent, the flight crew declared an emergency. After landing they reported that the first officer’s the window was not sealed properly.

THE VALUE OF THIS VIDEO:
THE MAIN VALUE IS EDUCATION. This reconstruction will be useful for actual or future air traffic controllers and pilots, people who plan to connect life with aviation, who like aviation. With help of this video reconstruction you’ll learn how to use radiotelephony rules, Aviation English language and general English language (for people whose native language is not English) in situation in flight, which was shown. THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS IS TO HELP PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY EMERGENCY SITUATION, EVERY WORD AND EVERY MOVE OF AIRCRAFT.
SOURCES OF MATERIAL, LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS:
Source of communications - www.liveatc.net/ (I have a permission (Letter) for commercial use of radio communications from LiveATC.net).
Map, aerial pictures (License (ODbL) ©OpenStreetMap -www.openstreetmap.org/copyrig...) Permission for commercial use, royalty-free use.
Radar screen (In new versions of videos) - Made by author.
Text version of communication - Made by Author.
Video editing - Made by author.
HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

Years ago we had a DC-10-10 with a door seal issue. Actually, it was a hatch that is located on the belly, just aft of the nose gear. Avionics Bay access, also accessible from another hatch in the cabin floor. The external hatch would seal correctly, except just after takeoff with a low PSID it made a "moaning" sound...I forever named that airplane "Mona".

All of you pilots, crew and passengers who have ever had to experience this issue, my condolences. I could barely tolerate it for 2 seconds...

It's pretty common. Windows and doors are plug devices. It is very common for one not to seal immediately. I've had this several times across different airplane types. In my experience the seal usually settles in and stops the squeal at higher altitudes.

Anyone remember that British flight where the pilot got sucked out of the plane when his pilot side window i.e. left, pop out and he didn’t have his seatbelt on tight. The F. A. who was in the cockpit held on to him until they got to a lower altitude when another F.A. came in and help him. They actually thought he was dead but didn’t want him to fly into the engines. It turned out that they used screws that were too small to fit into the window.

I've had a squeal like that a couple of times. Once in the CRJ200 the inflatable door seal on the service door popped while in cruise flight. It made a loud noise, scared the F/A so badly she spilled a drink all over a pax. We were PHL-STL and diverted into PIT. After offloading the pax we got a ferry permit and went back to PHL at 10,000 feet. What aggravated me was I could have literally fixed it with chewing gum and continued to STL but the optics of doing that weren't good. Another time I was ferrying a Embraer Phenom 300 when we starting getting a loud squeal from the main entry door. The lower we got the quieter it got. Since we were passing near an Embraer Service Center we diverted there. There was no way we could carry pax with that loud squeal and I couldn't find the exact location it was coming from.

I was a crew chief on C-130s in the USAF. On a test flight, we had a crew entry door that was leaking pressurization (not unusual for that particular airplane, it had a hard landing in Viet Nam and was twisted). The normal troubleshooting was to take a wet rag and try to seal the leak. The rag blew out the hole! Eh, we just continued the test flight and after another hour or so, went home.

These windows are plug types. Meaning they seal from the inside. It is very common for debris or the rubber seal to not seal completely and a squeal is heard as you climb out as the aircraft starts to pressurize. In my experience this almost always goes away as you climb higher. And it will return as you descend. Back in the day, crew members would go to the back of airplanes, peal back a door seal and have a smoke. All of the smoke went right out the door seal. Nobody knew. Trust me on this. LOL

I once heard a loud, incessant hissing noise coming from the rear of my vehicle. I pulled off the road to locate the source and found it was just my mother-in-law riding in the trunk. Carry on, America.

FYI, Airbus 300s are NOTORIOUS for their doors to squeal and or have very loud "POPS" during climb out, aka pressurization.
