One of the simplest pies to make, I suspect this pie had it's origins when ladies did not have refrigerators or ice boxes to keep their milk cold so lots of it probably clabbered. So they made pie using this milk.
Before electricity was available out in the country where my grandmother lived she keep milk and butter on a little platform that was lowered into the well. This kept the milk and butter at a constant 50 degrees. They were pretty clever back then.
Here's the recipe for the filling:
1 unbaked 9" pie crust
(my video for home made crust • Simple Pie Crust )
1 1/2 cups of sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 large eggs
1/2 cup melted butter at room temperature
1 cup whole milk buttermilk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Thanks for watching.

I have been baking this pie for 3 years now and I absolutely love it! My family loves it, we're hispanic so buttermilk pie isn't something we usually eat. But my fiancees family absolutely loves this pie, definitely won them over by making it last year when i first met them at thanksgiving!

Phyllis🙏🏻❤️ I cannot thank you enough for teaching me how to make this pie!! I only had it once (fell in love) and HAD to make it! I must have watched a dozen videos! I knew yours was going to taste like the one I fell in love with- no nutmeg & not lemony! I made it for our friend’s birthday, and while asking for a second piece he said “I never eat dessert!” We LOVED this pie!!! Thank you SO MUCH! I could jump through my phone and hug you!❤️

Hi Phyllis. I made this pie a few months ago and it became my favorite. I really wanted to make it again except I am out of milk/cream/buttermilk and no Crisco. I went ahead and made some subsitutions and wanted to let you know that it still came out fabulous! I used almond milk with 1 TB vinegar, salt and lemon juice for the buttermilk and used coconut oil instead of Crisco in the crust. I am so thrilled it still worked. Thank you for a lovely recipe.

@i Love ASMR @Jeff Duvall I knew before my daughters and I received our DNA results where our roots must have originated. The foods I grew up with in the US South were almost all English in origin. My grandmothers were excellent Southern cooks. Because they came from two different social classes I learned to make food from the hardworking, farming class to the more upper crust, citified class. (That’s not to say my citified family wasn’t hard working but the work was very different!). I learned to make fruit cake from a recipe which had been used for at least 3 generations in my family, making me the fourth generation. It is an example of a citified recipe. My farming family could not have afforded such an expensive treat and apple or peach pies were common, made from fruit that had been canned by my grandmother. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from the best!

I know I am kind of late to see this video but it really does bring back memories. I'm a nearly 59 year old guy and remember my Grandmother making Buttermilk Pie when I was very young. It was very much like a Custard Pie but more Butter Milk tasting than traditional custard. Oh my she could make terrific pies. She made several, from Apple to Peach and Cherry and Blueberry. She Made this one as well. AND, she made one called a Vinegar Pie. No it didn't taste like a ton of vinegar. The problem I had with her pies, if you want to call it a problem, was that she used to bake pies in bunches and put them in one or 2 freezers stored outside of the farmhouse inside the garage and then when she had visitors she would send someone outside to get one and bring it inside. If the freezer was full of just one variety it kind of got to be tiresome. Looks terrific though!

She and my Mama and her Sisters and Brothers cooked for a family of 8. They didn't skimp on food unless they couldn't afford it but if there was company, Mamaw made sure there was plenty to eat even though they couldn't afford it. She would make desserts Pies and Cakes. When I watch your video's it remind me of the Family times I grew up with. Love love love your videos. God Bless Ms. Phyllis

Here I am again in 2018! Hi Phyllis and Mr. Bucky! I have buttermilk...but I still have not made this.😱Complicated here with all the kids and pets. You know you two must have the most balanced life of anyone I've known. All that lovely comforting yummy food made from the heart. If I did that-no real worries I'm too old now lol-I would be as big as a house! I know its good and the way it should be but I haven't had a routine like that since I was a kid. Modern life I guess mostly. I was a single parent who worked all the time and then I got sick and my daughter and teenage grandkids are doing the same as I did. Its incredible to watch tho! I love looking at your meals and your careful prep. I'm trying to get better food in here and working on repairing some things in this old house-paying someone-so maybe if I become GiGi soon we can set a better example. One day I will be here crowing that I made some of your food! My 3 biggest challanges since I started cooking as a kid are homemade bread-pie crust and a layer cake that doesn't fall over! I cooked for my fam as a kid-Mom Dad and 4 younger bros-but they didn't care much what it looked like as long as it tasted good. Need to show my Mom the devotions too. She doesn't get out to church much anymore. I have to rely on my grandson now to get anywhere...but I am going to get us a van so we can do things together again so...thankyou again. Love you guys and your generous gifting of your channel!😍Sweet doggies too! We have 3. And 4 cats and a chinchilla.🐾🍰☕

My Mama'a recipe for crust is almost the same except for a tablespoon of sugar and vinegar. Thanks for sharing, my Thanksgiving table was outstanding this year. It's so amazing as a child, how our mothers, aunts and great aunts made holiday dinners look and taste so good and seem to put them together with ease. I can't wait to try this! My husband is very fussy about sweets. He is from Nigeria and does not like sweet. I'm thinking this pie and The Working Man pies are going to be a favorite of his if I make them just right. He doesn't even like raisins. They are too sweet for him. I just get frustrated trying to figure out what he and I can eat together. One thing is he likes pancakes, oatmeal, fried egg sandwiches and poached eggs. So that's something! We can eat rice as well but we eat rice differently. He doesn't like rice pudding. It's too sweet. Oh well it could be worse! Thanks so much for this recipe because it reminds me of one my mother used to make.

Your such a sweet lady. I love watching you cook and i have tried cooking some of your recpies and It reminds of the food I grew up on. I was born in 1958 and mom cooked this style for us. One of my favorites was her swiss steak she cooked all day long very slowing in crock pot using chuck steak. It always came out tender because of the way she beat the meant first with a meat mallot. Mom served this dish with rice making a tomato gravy with the the stewed tomatoes and peppers and onions in the crock pot.

Phyllis I made your version of buttermilk pie for today, Father's Day. I'm 70 yrs old - made this pie a lot of years, however your version is much richer than my old recipe from my grandmother, mine has 3 eggs instead of four, and less sugar. I'll be making your recipe from now on except omitting the lemon; keeping it separate from chess pie. Fabulous pie, thank you! I get such a kick from your videos, kind of a kinship if you will. Same name, southerner, love to cook - I even have a toy poodle! Most amazingly is a year ago I had the same surgery you had this Spring. Enjoying your journey ...

I just tried my first piece of buttermilk pie this week. I thought to myself I just might try to make one. First person I thought of that I'm sure had a great recipe for it was Mrs Phyllis! Thank you sweet lady and thanks to your son for keeping this channel going so that we could learn from you! You are definitely missed down here!

Re-watching this and trying to decide whether or not to make this for Christmas supper. Got teary-eyed hearing both Steely and Peppy in the background. Maybe I had better bake this for our Christmas supper. Merry Christmas, Ms. Phyllis and Mr. Bucky.

Hi Diane, I appreciate your request for a cookbook, writing and publishing a book of any kind takes a lot of time and effort, I guess what I'm trying to say is my KZbin channel is my cookbook. I even look up my own recipes on the channel because it's easier than looking it up in my handwritten recipe journals.
