Two weeks back I did a little trip to an airport I have never been before: NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen. This little airfield is located half in Holland and half in Germany, near the Dutch city of Maasstricht. Here is the NATO E-3a component based with a couple of Boeing E-3a Sentry AWACS aircraft. These aircraft are based on the legendary classic Boeing 707 and still have the old engines too! Fun thing is that they can't put different engines on these cause the electronics can't cope with that. If you want to enjoy these old school 60s sounds, Geilenkirchen is the place to be. But when you go, make sure you choose a better day than I did weather wise. It was cold, a bit windy and very very wet. It was long wait before there was any action. It started bucketing down right when two E3s were pushed and started, the first one had special NATO Tiger Meet markings and the second one was the aircraft with the special 35 years anniversary livery which was painted to celebrate 35 years of Boeing E-3A Sentry operation for the NATO.
The sounds were amazing from the Pratt & Whitney TF33-PW-100 engines, but due to the heavy downpour my shots of the first one were not good. Happilly I got a good shot of the spool up for take off. Then the second one lined up and throttled up and down a few times. Then it started the take off roll but they rejected their take off after about 1/3rd of the runway and went back to stand. It didn't depart anymore that day. Enjoy the wet pics! Video out tomorrow! I will definitly return here on a far better day with sunny and warm weather. :P
