In this video I demonstrate a technique for working one-round stripes (think striped hat) with clean color changes.
THE MATH:
Take your total number of stitches, and divide that number by the number of colors you want to use in your stripes. In my sample, I have 72 stitches and 3 colors. 72 divided by 3 = 24, so I have 24 stitches between each of my markers. If the number of stripes you want to use don't divide evenly into your stitch count (ex, 80 stitches and three colors), that's okay. It isn't vital that the stitches between the markers are the exact same number of stitches - getting close is fine. In the example I just gave, I would put 28/26/26 stitches in my segments.
The yarn in my "bad" example is leftover from my Om Shawl:
www.ravelry.com/projects/very...
The yarn in my "good" sample is Berroco Vintage Worsted.
The needles I use are all Knitter's Pride 16" circulars from interchangeable sets.
My nail polish is Gelish, "I Or-kid You Not".

Thank you so much for your clear instructions. I have watched dozens of KZbin videos on this technique, and yours is the easiest 👏🏻Working on a baby hat right now and it’s turning out excellent. I love that you don’t slip 3 stitches. You just drop the color and start with the next color. Genius 🥳

Someone just recommended this technique not for striping but for alternating hand dyed skeins of yarn in garments. I think it's a brilliant application of the technique. It saves you from having to twist the yarns and you don't get a seam.

I LOVE helix knitting! So glad you did a video on it. Remember that pattern you did for round dishcloths? I used one as the top of a hat and picked up the edge stitches to helix knit around it. My grandson loved it. One thing I would mention is the colors twisting up. I line up the colors in order and when I get to the next color I’d move it to the back of the line. ❤️

I contacted you about this a year ago when I discovered helix knitting. I'm so glad that you made a video! I've ordered a set of Addi Flex needles because the pattern was easy until I tried to decrease. Combining helix and DPNs was too much for my uncoordinated hands (and brain) to take. My son has been waiting for me to finish that hat for a year!

I like it how the balls or skeins or yarn are messy and just there on the table. 😆 I actually discovered this technique by accident when I was knitting a hat using 4 colors and I lost count of my stitces and kept on knitting and knitting then noticed that the jog is missing at the starting row. Very good instructional videos. I've been watching all of these and gaining new techniques and styles propely. Than you!

Fantastic! Desperate to learn something new - but easy - all my big blankets, etc. too hot to knit. Thought - ok - do some charity hats...found this and it's new to me and fun - the math so easy. Really appreciate your great work!!! Think I'll do one with 3 colors - then one with 4 - getting rid of yarn - bags of it to donate in trunk of car - resolving to stop keeping so many leftovers - I heard you say you don't do this - and boy did it feel great to purge about 3/4 of my yarn. This helix thing is so cool! Thanks!

Thank you for this tutorial, it's very clear and makes this technique seem very simple. I don't suppose it can be used for wider stripes? I recently completed a sweater with random stripes, all different widths, and I ended up with a lots of jogs at the end of the round.

I think it is important to mention that when you switch colors, at least the first few rows, you need to pay attention to the tension of the last stitch in the color to which you are changing. Some people think you need to pull it tighter, but it's actually the opposite. You want to make sure the stitch in the row below matches the size of the other stitches. If you do this on the first few rows, I believe it will solve the issue of having the first few rows looking wonky.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 5 жыл бұрын
What you said is probably true, but I think the "wonkiness" of the first few rows is just the nature of working with multiple colors in the spiral. Keeping good tension is always important, but the rows always look straighter after you've worked a little bit in the fabric.
@TheSpiddles
@TheSpiddles 5 жыл бұрын
I love this technique. I'm having issues with the tension of the last stitch of the colour below. Have you got any tips on how to keep the stitch the right size? Mine alternate between being far too tight to too loose. I can't seam to get it even to the other stitches.

Does anyone know what to do if you’ve done a helical section and then want to go back to single colour for the last section? Do you just keep knitting with that single colour once you get back round to it or would that look uneven? I love this technique - I plan on using it for all my stripes in the round, just for the lack of ends alone!

my problem is not the jog. I learned how to fix that. My problem is that when I change color at the end of the row, that place where I change colors whether it is after one row or every two or three rows, is always a loose mess. How do I keep the tension even with the color change row. And the looseness is there even when I do not change color at the end of the row.
@jq7136
@jq7136 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I've come up with two mistakes it appears. One is at the place with the color changes it looks like a purl stitch; and secondly I'm doing magic loop with this in the place where the color changes keeps moving over to the right is that normal? Like it started halfway between the rabbit ears of the magic loop and then next thing I know the color changes 1/4 of the way in from one rabbit ear instead of halfway in.

Thank you for doing a video on this! I was frustrated with this very problem a month ago and couldn't get my stripes to look right doing the normal jogless correction. I'm excited to try helix knitting. I do have one question. If you want to have the top of the hat be a solid color to match the brim, how do you finish off the stripe parts and begin the solid part? Thanks! You're amazing!❤
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 6 жыл бұрын
Just switch to your solid color at the beginning of the round, and on the second round of the top of the hat, work this color-jog correction technique: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKO5gWRobqehiMk (This link is to the traditional color-jog correction technique, when the stripes are 2 or more rounds.)

If you wanted to have stripes that were 2 rounds deep would you just use 2 balls of each colour and treat them as though they were separate colours? EG if you wanted 2 rounds red and 2 rounds blue, could you divide the round into 4 sections add a 2nd ball of red at the 1st marker, add the 2 blue balls at markers 2 and 3 and then continue as per the video?

Hi Stacey. I have two questions for you, please. The first question is, can helix stripes be applied to crocheting? I am making an amigurumi ball and I'm using up six colors of remnants. My second question is, can you work in the helix pattern while increasing stitches in knitting or crocheting? I also knit and can knit the ball if this won't apply to crochet. Thanks so much.
