Tunisian Shaker Dishcloths

I recently released a video on how to create a crocheted provisional cast-on without picking up stitches ( • Knitting Help - Provis... ). That technique will NOT work for this pattern. Because each Tunisian crocheted row requires working both left-to-right and right-to-left to complete a row, that modified provisional cast-on sets you up in the wrong position. Please work the provisional cast-on as indicated in the video and pattern.
Information on things you'll see in this video:
The yarn I used is Knit Picks Comfy Worsted, (my favorite dishcloth yarn) in the following colors: White, Honey Dew, Sea Foam, Marlin, Creme Brulee, and Fizz.
The crochet hook I'm using is Knitter's Pride Dreamz in size K, 6.5mm.
The nail polish I'm wearing is by Julep, color "Amanda".

This is the best "mantra" for the kitchener stitch! Thank you! I use Kitchener a lot in knitting and have to refer to a book every time to refresh how to start (under into one, above into another, etc.). Your way is much easier to remember. And the pinwheels are so cute, of course, that's why I came here in the first place.

Thank you. I've really enjoyed making this Shaker Dishcloth. At first I rebelled making the tied knots with tails clipped short the way you show them. But after making about 10 dish cloths, weaving in the ends were a daunting task. So I started doing the knots the way you suggest. But I did something I like better using Fray Check.I don't think the Shakers knew about Fray Check. I put a drop of Fray Check on the first half of the knot, then finish tying the second half of the knot so the Fray Check was completely absorbed into the knot. Then, I could clip the tails very, very short. But the knot is still bumpy. So while the Fray Check is still wet, I pounded the knot flat with the butt end of a crochet hook. The bump is flattened and no tails show at all. When I described my experimentation to my weaving and spinning guild, they suggested I try carrying the colors around so there is only one set of beginning and ending tails to deal with. It's a different look, but much easier, too. Let me know if you want to see photos.

I gave up trying the printed pattern from my Ravelry download during Hurricane Matthew (I blame the stress, not your pattern.) When the skies cleared, I remembered you had a video! Tried it tonight and success! The secret is all in finding where to put the hook. Thank you for the clear video. I used an acrylic yarn for more scrubbing power, so I had ends to weave in, but it's worth it. And I hate weaving in ends. ;-) I'm starting another dishcloth before I go to bed. Oh, the only tip I would suggest is if you are not using double pointed needles, is to be sure you have your needle points pointing toward the center of the circle when you slide stitches onto them. I had to pull my needles out and put them back in the right way. Scary!

I have made a lot of these! Instead of changing my color at the edge though, I change at the center of circle letting the 2 colors float. I dint mind the knots at edge, ( like in vid), but I like changing colors at circle center & floating the yarn so I don't hv all the knots.

Love this project!! Learned two new techniques..kitchner stitch and provisional cast on!! I have a hint about the "knots"..I learned this from the Frugal Gourmet..remember him lol? I use a "butcher's knot". instead of putting the yarn through the loop once, you do it twice (this is on the second pull through, if that makes sense) ie- make the loop and pull yarn through once, then make loop and pull yarn through twice instead of once. then tighten like crazy. it just doesn't come loose!

tying off knot, do a half surgeon = do the first overhand knot, / , then when doing the next overhand knot put end of that yarn through same space, so there is 2 / / yarns, then pull tight. knot will stay, I also used this knot to tie 2 together.cut close to ends.

Hello I was wondering do you have to change colors? I mean I have a Caron cake and would like to just continue on without haveing to weave in a bunch of ends is this possible to do ? I can use a scrap part to start and then just conitue on without having a bunch of color changes ( cutting) and then still work the kitchener stitch at the end ?

I tried to finish off the end of this cloth 5 times. Tore it out, tried again, etc. There is no way to hide the opposite color loop. So I don't know how you got it turned under, but you did. Can you help.

I've done the pattern using the sugar n cream yarn and the whole is much wider then yours. I used a smaller hook and a bigger hook same result. When I close the center I get ripples. +very pink

Also, if you are accidentally not changing colors after you've picked up 12 stitches, and worked back to two loops remaining on your hook, but working all 14 stitches, and then changing colors...and then picking up 14 stitches with new color as well...this will leave a larger hole in the center. I only know because I did this, I had to reread the written instructions to realize my mistake. Instead of one stitch of each color in the center, mine had two stitches of each color. Hope that makes sense, and might help someone, someday :) Oh, and I used Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, and they worked up fine :-)

I did the first segment with two slight variations: 1) when picking up the last stitch of the previous row (the one that is diagonal), I pick up it and its twin behind it. This closes up the gap that can appear. 2) when working on casting off (left to right), I do NOT do the cast off only one, then two there after, as I find that I don't like the gap it creates. I only cast off two together the whole row. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I had finished (and tuck/weave in the ends) of segments two (2) and three (3) (both of which were color changes) that I had gone to re-watch part of the video and discovered a mistake I had been making... I did the two loop color change properly, along with tying the ends together, BUT I somehow missed the part about the WHOLE length of this row being 15 loops of the new color. I had instead gone right into the 3 loops row, followed by 5, then 7, etc. So I ended up with two segments made up of seven rows rather than eight rows. They look nice... butttt, I knew that it was too good to be true that things were going well without a hitch. If only I had caught onto my error before cutting the yarn. I hate wasting yarn. Oh well, I shall do the rest with eight row segments and see about how to recover, if necessary or possible, the two missing rows. :-p

before you do the Kitchener stitch, could you use the tail to close up the center circle and then continue on with the Kitchener stitch seam? just thinking it would create one less end to tie off.

I used chopsticks, haha, and I put them in my pencil sharpener and made them nice and round, on both ends. Then I used sandpaper to remove some of the sharpness from the tips and make them smooth, and finally used the sandpaper to make the whole length and everything round and as smooth as possible :) I first used a coarser grit, then a finer grit sandpaper. It worked well. Now, some chopsticks are better suited for this than others. Luckily, I had a selection of sets to choose from. The ones I chose did come from a restaurant, they were barely stuck together. They come in white paper stamped (or whatever) with green bamboo along about half the length, then 3 bamboo leaves in a bunch, then red chinese characters at the opposite end. On the back side, they have instructions for using, done in red ink, with three sections of print, and 3 pictures. Hope that might help someone. I don't have a gauge, but, I believe they turned out to be about 5mm double pointed knitting needles. They really turned out nicely :)

No - you didn't do anything incorrectly. Extra stitches in the chain will make it easier when it comes time to unravel the provisional cast-on to pick up the live stitches.

Why is Comfy your favourite dishcloth yarn? Have you tried KnitPicks's Dishie yarn? What are the pros and cons of Comfy vs Dishie? do you have any yarn review/comparison or even just general info videos? Just something talking about different fibres and what characteristics they have and lend to a blend? or if not can you recommend a such a video by anyone else?

Knit Picks may have a video (or information) about the differences between their cotton yarns. I like Comfy because it is absorbent, soft, and has a nice shine - I have never used Dishie. I personally don't like knitting with 100% cotton, so the blend of Comfy makes the knitting nicer for me.

I'm with Staci here. I have always, always, always used 100% cotton for kitchen projects but I ordered Comfy for this project to make sure it worked up like it was supposed to (since that's what she recommended). I gotta tell ya, I may never used 100% cotton again. The difference is huge - Comfy is so much softer than 100% cotton, and it doesn't have that annoying cotton tendency to split. It's the same price as Dishie so it's worth tossing a couple skeins of Comfy in with your order. Specifically for this project, I would HATE to use 100% cotton for Tunisian crochet because it does split so much and because 100% cotton is so stiff. If you haven't done Tunisian crochet before, you kind of need some give so that you don't have big gaps, and so you can get your hook through without getting so frustrated that you quit the project.

I've just started crochet and I'm working on a blanket which uses two colours. I hope that I'll have enough left over to give this a go! I love Dreamz needles,but how are the Dreamz as a crochet hook? I think I will, in future, buy a set of tunisian hooks. I have the Dreamz needles, and I'm wondering how the grippiness is on the crochet hooks. I tend to like my needles to grip and I've found that to be true for crochet as well. It's just that I've never used a wooden crochet hook before, and I don't want to put a lot of money into something I now I don't like. Unfortunately my local shop doesn't carry the hooks, only the needles, so I can't really try it out.

Blocking boards like mine are not currently available anywhere - but you can use blocking mats, foam puzzle pieces that fit together to create a blocking board. They are available from several retailers.

When making your knot, try using a surgical knot. Just like a regular hand over hand knot aka double knot, cross the threads twice fist time and pull to tighten, then just once to secure it.

My aunt used to dbl knot all her ends on all of her cotton work, wash it, and then close-cut the ends after ensuring all the knots had remained secure and tight. Nothing ever unraveled on her.

Nevermind, I figured it out *_* I hadn't even started when I asked that question. I had watched the video and read the written pattern several times though. I like to understand all the instructions, before I begin a new project. But, yesterday I started practicing on it anyway. I spent a couple hours and finally had three and a half segments. I could see that something was wrong, because the part that would be the center was not...each stitch alternating between the two colors. So, this morning I started over, and it's working out just right! I'm just using scraps of acrylic yarn, and a regular Boye 6.5 mm crochet hook. This hook looks like the one she said wouldn't work but, it actually seems to work fine. I also have a tunisian crochet hook in size 5.5 mm I still have to purchase the yarn and... maybe some double point knitting needles. My local craft store sells 5 bamboo needles, in the 6 mm size for $10.00; and 5 aluminium needles in the 5mm size for $4.29. I could try using my 5.5 tunisian crochet hook, and just get the less expensive knitting needles. The cotton yarn I plan on getting recommends a 5 mm crochet hook. So, maybe if I do something like 17 stitches, or 19 stitches, it would work up nicely with the smaller hook and needles...? I'll let you guys know what happens. I also figured out I can use two new pencils, sand them down a bit, sharpen them all most all the way, and cover the ends in nail polish, and that would work with my 6.5 mm regular aluminium crochet hook for this project. Haha! I might just try that, then I'll only have to buy the yarn! Sorry this is so long; can you tell I don't have anyone to talk with, ever? Well thank you, ever so much! I'll let you know what way I go, and how it turns out :-)

I'm a crocheter, so all of these KNOTS make me nervous :) especially when CUT so short! {Huge NO-NO for crochet usually!}. I'm wondering why you don't just use that tapestry needle to weave in the tails under the stitches? I've done this with entrelac patterns and works fine. Also, at the end - you really need 2 big knitting needles? It seems so similar to simple whipstitching going both ways? {granted, I have not actually tried the project yet - so may be entirely off base ; I had knitting needles ages ago but no clue where they might be}

You can trust me - all of the techniques I use are tried and true. I've washed and dried my dishcloths dozens of times, and the knots hold fine in this yarn. My channel is mainly geared toward knitters, so the kitchener stitch at the end is a way to graft the stitches with no seam.

Don't use any fabric softeners in the washer or dryer. If you want to get rid of any smells use a little bit of white vinegar in the wash in the fabric softener spot.

This is so cool....there is a Carousel CAL pattern ( www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/carousel-cal) that has this wheel look in it but with a center motif. I believe its all crochet but I think it would look so cool with this knitted stitch look...just have to figure out how to do it around a center motif..
