Your mentor teacher is the person who truly shapes how you feel about teaching going forward in the process. I had three horrible, first mentor teachers, and it wasn’t until I got to my last one that I truly felt seen and understood that I could do teaching.He is still one of my best friends to this day.❤

My first year teaching, I had 15 different preps. Seniors would be packing up as K4 started coming in. Plus I was the sponsor for 2 different clubs. I would love an episode just on specials teachers vs core and admin. There is such a gap in understanding between us!

I’m a career switcher so I could relate when you were talking about it at the end. The best part is that parents automatically assume that you have a lot of experience because you’re not 25. My mentor teacher my first year was AMAZING. My admin was not though. She rode my tail and gave me NO understanding that I was new to teaching and new to the role.

Oh no that’s the worst 😔 it’s like can you please explain

only halfway through but it’s really interesting to get the veterans side of the “new teachers vs veterans” dynamic and compare it to the other “new teachers vs veterans” video you guys did earlier this year with bri, tyler, and jess giving the newer teachers pov on this dynamic

I already know I’m going to love this episode. I’m a third year and my best mentor teacher has been one virtually from the same state. ❤

Veteran teacher here: In a title 1 school, don’t voice an idea of something “we should do” at our school. A) you will be voluntold to do it without much support, and b) wait for a few years, since teaching by itself is enough stress. Get your system down first.

In a staff meetimg everyone was sharing their "why's" and the whole room was talking about how they were here for the kids and the families. When it was my turn I said my "why" was myself and the whole room gasped

I think with the over volunteering, the first year teachers, or any new employees , think/hope/want to look good. Maybe hoping that may help with a raise?

Curious why Jess Smith goes by Jess Smith but then her tagline calls her Jess Merril? I know it’s her married last name versus maiden name but I would think she would pick one and use it.

I didn't even make it past college lol but I had a horrific student teacher experience... Library science ed k-12. PA. Middle school. My mentor teacher, older, clearly veteran teacher and has everything down great, in an affluent district, for that area, and yet the kids had behavioral issues back in 2012/13 era lol (after I left a kid stabbed another with a pocket knife they brought to school -lovely)...she literally said to me "this isn't your first rodeo"...when I was student teaching!!! Like I didn't even have a position yet, still in school, yes it kinda is my first rodeo!...lol and everyone has different styles and I was trying to learn hers and how to be with the kids...like the most experience I'd had before student teaching sr year was mostly observation of other teachers and like maybe I lead one class in jr year I forget what it's called, but it's between observation and actually getting to student teach and lead lessons and fully writing lesson plans (which she didn't even really let me do... I was just to follow hers I think idk it was so bizarre). And I ended up working in a public library out of college and schools are getting rid of school librarians sadly so what did I bother with all that for...lol so mad. That shift was just happening as I was getting out of college looking for work.

Not teaching related but it's the same thing yall were talking about. My aunt didn't set boundaries. The church she went to made her DO EVERYTHING. No I'm not ever joking. My aunt never said no. And when she finally started saying "like no I'm not going to run every single thing all do at the church" they would make her feel guilty. So she kept running all of the events. And my aunt had a lot of medical issues. So she was not able to help out at the church. And they were MAD that she had medical issues. Like keep in mind that was a CHURCH. it's not just in teaching it's in every job. Do not say yes to everything

I dont teach high school. What does a “prep” mean. Like a planning period?
@Hooptie721Ай бұрын
A “prep” refers to separate lessons that a teacher has to prepare each day. For example, a math teacher might teach an algebra class, and a geometry class, so they prepare two lessons but teach them multiple times. When I taught elementary, I had five preps. I taught math, reading, writing, spelling, and I switched with the other teacher and taught my science lesson twice.
