My 13 year old Grand daughter was talking to me about how much she loves the smell of old stuff like old books and raggedy ann dolls. She said she would rather shop at thrift stores and antique shops than the big stores her friends went to. She said she was a nerd but she embraced it because if we were all the same we would be like a dish of food with no seasonings. The world would just be bland. I love her old soul

I am a collector of anything vintage lol A few years ago we went to an estate sale about 40 miles from where we live. The estate was a well known couple that was also collectors of many things. I bought a few old Reader Digest and in one from April 1940 ,it was the 19th anniversary of publication.,in the quote section which even as a child was my favorite to read. I often read it first. In this publication Bruce Barton in a Lincoln birthday address quoted “ We are here to honor the memory of an American who was ill fed ill clothed, ill honored and didn’t even know it. “Another one in the same publication was from Oscar Wilde “ Men always wants to be a woman’s first love. Women have a more subtle instinct, what they like is to be a man’s last romance “ I really enjoy reading and looking at the ad’s from vintage magazines but in Readers Digest during this time frame was no advertising at all. I think people kept these because there are good readings and really never go out of date. I am here reading them 84 years later and still enjoying them.

My mom contracted malaria when she served in the Red Cross during WWII. She was sent stateside on a Coast Guard ship and now allowed out of her cabin until the other passengers went to bed because back in those days malaria was thought to be contagious which of course has proved to not be the case. She was escorted to the deck by a handsome ship Lieutenant. The ship was crossing the equator and the stars were enormous in the sky and it proved to be very romantic and that handsome Lieutenant ended up being my daddy! ♥️ My contribution to your words of wisdom is one I always told my children; when it comes to you making a decision or a choice, make one that 25 years from now when you look back, you will be happy and proud of the decision you made. In other words don’t quickly make a decision, think carefully.

I have many Veterans in my family including my son. My sister-in-law is a retired Registered Nurse. Her entire career was with the Veteran's Hospitals, she was Director of Surgical Nurses for all of the VA Hospitals in the country. About 13 years while I was visiting her in MA, I went with her to her office. She told me that many of the WWII Veterans had regular insurance but preferred the Veterans Hospitals because they had almost no family left. They preferred being in a welcoming caring hospital with their fellow Veterans. The camaraderie and compassion for each other at the end of their lives meant everything to them when they feel forgotten and all alone.

But, he would never talk about his time in the service. As I got older I realized it was probably because what witnessed & had to do. Aswell as the things that happen when he came back home... When my Dad passed away & we received his Military Records & read the campaigns he had been in. It confirmed what I thought in ref. to what he had to do & witnessed. And unfortunately, my Aunt also confirmed what he went through when he went back home to South Carolina. We didnt even know about his metals, until reading his discharge papers... My father wanted to go overseas during the Second World War with his friends and relatives. He had had rheumatic fever when he was sixteen and again at twenty-one. His heart was damaged and so he could not go. However he was able to work in a munitions plant. Many people today do not know that during the war the government took charge of plants where previously appliances had been made. Also because so many men were overseas they permitted women to work in what were formerly men's jobs. This was also the first time women wore pants as a necessity and today, we enjoy the freedom of wearing them all the time. We should pause to remember all people associated with war. They are unsung warriors.

I served in the Air Force in 1971 and 1972 at a secret base in northeastern Thailand were we were trying to stop trucks and Troops from North Vietnam moving down the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos to South Vietnam. We were in the tropics and Malaria was common there and we were all ordered to take an anti-malaria pill once every week and even had some issued to take for each week after we returned to the US. It was considered a very serious thing not to take that pill. Thirty years before I was there my Father was in Burma and India during WWII and he said that the British had what was called Tonic Water that contained Quinine which did the same thing. And for all the other veterans that were not as fortunate as I was and sacrificed so much more than I did I give you my biggest and best SALUTE!

In that vintage Readers Digest on page 68 an article called Your Happiness is in you Hands! The article is by Bois Blai He was a sculptor and educator. The article talked about a young lady in a mental hospital and drs thought she was a lost cause ,one day a Dr took a big lump of clay in when he had her daily therapy. He fashioned a face in the clay and the young lady was so happy and asked him to do it again. She watched intently. Soon she grabbed the clay and also fashioned a face . She improved and was released and was cured. She became an instructor and her work was exhibited. It really is true if you are heavy hearted and depressed sometimes just doing something that you haven’t done or haven’t done lately such making something with your hands , it takes your mind off your troubles and later you can revisit the problem after you have cleared your mind and the answer comes to you. It’s God’s way of resetting us I think.

God bless all those who serve our great country. I had uncle who served (marines), earned numerous medals for bravery (pulling out wounded soldiers under fire, that type of thing). He lived to be a teller of TALL TALES, 🤪wild ones (but good-natured) . Oddly, he never told anybody about all the TRUE things that'd happened, including all his real courage (they heard about it on the local news and in the papers, I kid-u-not). I myself never served but I am IN AWE OF and have a debt of gratitude to all who did. Even if they never get into combat, they sign their life on that line when they serve. Such courage, so grateful. 🙌🏼

Armistice day here too Tipper. The Armistice was agreed at 5am on the 11th November 1918, and was to come into effect at 11am that day. In those 6 hours 2,000 people were killed, even though everyone knew the war would end. Over 500 American troops died trying to take a German trench a few hours before 11am, because their commander wanted to make a name for himself as he hadn't had a chance to get involved in the conflict! The German troops in the trench they were attacking tried to get them to break off the attack, to no avail. Sad to loose anyone in war, even safer to loose someone for no reason whatsoever.

My stepfather contracted malaria during the vietnam war. It also stayed with him his entire life and still to this day struggles with it. The only thing that helps him is tonic water, the kind made with true quinine. He said the VA used to prescribe him quinine for it, but they stopped, and so he had to find what works...incredible to me that it's a water flavored from a quinine tree! It seems to be a terrible disease. when it hits him, which is very seasonally...he is so frail and weak and is shivering, it's scary!

Hi Tipper, Did you see the man walking around his yard checking the damage and looking at the water line that had been up to his roof. Then he looks and sees a Bible stuck on a branch perfectly fine and it’s opened to Revalations. He was amazed. How was the Bible dry and not ruined after seeing how high the water was all the way up to his roof. He’s on KZbin. Just type in Bible found after storm in S.C.

Love this video and all the links of your family playing and singing. Curious though, what is the black thing floating in the sky behind you and to the right of you on the screen? No matter where you go, there you are.

Hello there, that thing you mentioned is the bottom part of some wind chimes thats attached the top of the porch . If you look closely you can see the chimes. All good.
