Doctor Mike recently posted a video on how his Husky lost her leg because of a sarcoma in her right front paw and some questionable decision-making by the veterinary team.
I, as a veterinarian from South Africa, decided to react to his video just to give you guys some insight as to how one would usually approach a case like this and what you need to know and ask your veterinarian in the event that you need to make important life decisions for your pet, as Doctor Mike had to do with Roxy.

If you listen to the original video carefully, you will notice that it was his elderly father who took the dog to the vet while Doctor Mike was working at his practice. I think Doctor Mike has some lingering doubts about whether his father questioned the vet just as vigorously as he would have. I think one thing that caused trouble was that the father did not notice the bandage gradually destroying the foot quickly enough. Perhaps if the dog had been in Doctor Mike's residence resting up after surgery, the trouble would have been noticed earlier.

If I feel a lump or a bump somewhere where I know it shouldn't be I get it checked out, same thing for your pets. If you have trouble remembering write questions down for your vet. Those things shouldn't be put on the back burner. It's better to find out it's not a problem then to believe it's not a problem and something happens later. I'm sorry that happened to Dr Mike.

This vet left out information. It was Dr. Mike's elderly father that took the dog. He trusted his medically trained father to ask the questions he (Dr. Mike) gave him, but he (Dr. Mike's father) didn't ask the questions and just let them do whatever to the dog.

@@TaraConway16 I highly doubt that they didnt inform the father of these risks, its normally on a form you sign for this type of surgery, secondly, you shouldnt rely on other people to take your dog to the vet when you already have complicated questions. and lastly, toe checks are in post op discharge instructions for a surgery like this, which means they didnt do them at home because this problem could have been caught early enough if toe checks were done

@@Fluteperson01 If you paid attention, you would know that it's the father's dog. And do you realize how busy doctors are? It's not a regular 9-5 job. And the questions he had were pretty simple.

Hi, so no it’s not his fathers dog, it’s his dog, the dog lives with his dad because bear and Roxy can’t be in the same house cause I guess NY apartment rules, he said most of you know Roxy doesn’t live with me anymore she is at my dads house, there is plenty of people who house thier children’s dog, it happens ALL the time. And he is busy I get it but you can make time for a vet appointment. Especially one as important as surgery :/ if you can’t then you have to accept that maybe not all of the information is gonna be relayed back correctly

It irritates me how he complains about not getting a full info (and simultaneously „indirectly” accuses the vet staff either of withdrawing that info on purpose or being altogether incompetent) when he didn’t even go himself 😤😤 It is so common that owners send their spouses, parents or even kids to the vet and those people don’t know anything about the pet😓😓 Do we look like psychics? Does he have an appointment videotaped? Otherwise how possibly could he know what was actually said and what was not (it also happens a lot - not everything being passed on). So maybe his big conclusion should be „Go to the vet YOURSELF before subjecting your pet to any procedure.” Sincerely

Vet medicine has become specialized in America. There really are vet oncologists and vet surgeons who do a narrow scope of procedures full time.

He’s just upset and taking it out on a public platform which is never a good idea. Amputation as an outcome when planning malignant tumour removal with margins from a dog’s limb is extremely common. Owner compliance and time frames weren’t clear here. He’s probably pissed he had to pay for the amp. Take aways - attend the consult yourself or at very least speak to vet on the phone. - communication and continuity of care are so important - complications happen. Life happens. Disappointing outcomes happen. Make the best of it. - Accept responsibility for following after care, and paying for it. I will say, as far as amputations go, some clients can accept and deal with that possibility reasonably, and others are horrified that you might even suggest it. It’s definitely a divisive topic. I’m actually annoyed that he’s bagging the vet when he’s a medical professional himself.
