The soothing, earthy scent hippies never picked up on, but should have. You might know it as khuss or khass, the exotic scent of green grass and calm.
Like oud, vetiver comes in many shades, but unlike oud it comes from different parts of the world. Join Ensar Oud and Sheikh Ehab as they lie down in green pastures, from Sri Lanka to El Salvador, for a closer look at this timeless aromatic.

Ehab: Yeah, it was amazing. I woke up and I just sat up for a minute and I was like, yeah this is something that you can't put on before you go to sleep.
Ensar: No, I told you. I told you.
Ehab: Yeah, you did mention it, but I'm sorry to say this, but I didn't actually believe you because people told me caffeine keeps me awake too, but I can drink coffee at night and it doesn't prevent me from sleeping.
Ensar: Right.
Ehab: But I didn't know the mystical, magical, spiritual influence of oud like this. I had never experienced this before.
Ensar: Especially Sultan Mustafa.
Ehab: Sultan Mustafa with all the history behind it, just in the name and the quality of it.
Ensard: The quality of the aloes that went into that was just stupendous.
Ehab: Yeah, it's sort of like… that sweet resin that comes from the trees or is it…?
Ensar: It's gyrinops from New Guinea with like…it's a hybrid of gyrinops from New Guinea with acquilaria from Brunei.
Ehab: So is that oceanic?
Ensar: Oceanic New Guinea…see now you're getting the hang of the terminology there.
Ehab: Well, this just happened to me over night when I smelled this. It was like wow!
Ensar: It's like a tropical jungle.
Ehab: Yeah, it's like a tropical jungle and I had to look around and I'm still in my bed.
(Laughter)
Ehab: So I was thinking what a wonderful experience.
Ensar: That's amazing.
Ehab: And it's all halal, too.
Ensar: Well, I'm sorry it woke you up.
Ehab: Well, I wasn't…sometimes I wake up for other reasons.
Ensar: I don't like anything interrupting my sleep. Even the most expensive oud like…
Ehab: Well, I wasn't that upset once I got up. At first I was sort of like…I woke up with sort of like an alarm, right. And then I realized what it was, I just put my arm in front of my face and the aroma, the fragrances just came in and you know…
Ensar: That's a sign.

just discovered Ruh Khus last year and it is such a beautiful sweet, green, incensy smell. It really does cool you down in the summertime and is definitely one of my favorite notes now. It is really interesting how the same perfume material will smell differently based on it's terroir and/or cooking techniques. Sitting down in the home of an Oud distiller totally changed my perspective, appreciation and knowledgeability. Being present for a distillation would be an incredible experience for anyone.

Assalamualaikum brother. I prayed fajr and then sat back wth some coffee as well as started this video. Then I went to my collection and put the khus oil out. Applied to my beard, and hands. Layered wth some Jasmine rose musk oil. Masha Allah. So calm. Resume watching.

I truly love this and yes, I will be coming for a visit inshaAllah. About the Oud distilled in Zamzam....i think this oud will be something out of this world. Knowing you from just the forums and online interaction, I have no doubt what kind of aloes you'll be using for this project. This will result in "Oud Euphoria"... and I think the name will be just spot on! See you in the near Future Sidi Ensar and Shaikh Ehab.

Had swiped some Vetiver/Khus, throughout this one and felt like i am sitting with you guys and it felt great. Im going to mix some Ruh jasmine with a bit as well ;) . Since Sheikh Ehab loves the smell of fresh rains on earth, he is gona love Attar Mitti. I apply vetiver mostly before sleeping and it helps in relaxing and inducing vivid dreams. It should help in meditation as well although your point of focus will be vetiver ;) . Its so good to know that Shaikh Ehab loves meditation, trekking, bycycling and i do these myself. If i dont go to L.A in winter with family i would love to go to Jordan InshaAllah. Thank you once again for being humble and giving us a chance to meet you and it would be an honor. Bless you

Just my own experience with zam zam has been when i make my own blend of perfume for myself nd friends is that it makes the fragrance more sweeter nd somehow the impurities get separated in the jar, although i only use around 2/4 drops of zam zam in around 200 ml of attaar nd alcohol mix. Khus u can mix with some shamama to give it the spicy touch of sri lankan mix nd the best way to do it is to mix it by making it a little warm. It’s just self taught from experience that i m sharing with u guys , i might b wrong but it works for me , please correct me if i m doing it the wrong way nd enlighten me with ur knowledge to improve my passion of fragrances.

Fyi the vetiver that you get in some parts of Southern India also is similar to the Sri lankan vetiver. It's sharp and spicy. South indians heat up water with vetiver in it and drink the water. This water helps with stomach problems and few other health issues

I just started buying materials and got a 4 ml bottle of some vetiver. Its dark brown colored and smells very earthy smokey and rooty. Then I got a sample of a triple distilled vetiver that's much milder with complex nuances. More light and fresher. Interesting how varied Vetiver can be in smell.

Salaam!!! I have to be honest guys, I (along with those I gave it to smell) found Ruh Khus to be quite unpleasant. Maybe I received a poor quality version but it was a thick sticky green liquid. The scent was akin to clothes which haven't been dried properly, very damp and grassy smell. I felt like it needed to be blended with another oil or may be diluted if to ever be enjoyed. Bourbon Vetiver from the Réunion Island, on the other hand, is a lot more pleasant with a smoky, nutty almost leathery earthiness quality to it which you can absolutely wear on its own. It is an oil I would gladly recommend sampling if you ever get the chance, who knows it might be used in a mukhallat!!!!

I may be a newbie but I'd like to share an opinion I have of Vetiver. It seems to me that the top notes vary greatly from sample to sample but what I've come to believe about this particular compound is that it has a dichotomy, much in the same way that real Cinnamon has. An alter ego if you will. This in itself makes a great ingredient for perfumers because it adds a dual purpose and it opens up a huge variety of choices to the perfumer. The one thing I've noticed about the lower end, which tends to be more consistent, is that it falls into a category that many perfumer's are familiar with in their terminology, but seldom use as a specific note or category for their collection, (a choice that I think deserves reconsideration). That category is mineralogical: petroleum, tar, rust, dirt, etc. These are very unique base notes with strong earthy character and they seem to have more versatility in the area of longevity more so than as blenders. But with a little creativity they can do both.
