I don't know where you live but here in Europe, when something designer says where it is made, it means it's high quality. So Gucci is proud to be Italian and people know the name, when it says 'made in Italy' it means it is high quality designer stuff. Same with Paris for example. I guess it is a bit different from 'made in Idaho'.

I like your idea of using a vinyl eraser. I'll keep that one in mind. I like to clean leather with a good quality soap (not detergent) like Ivory bar soap. I let it dry after cleaning, and then treat it with neatsfoot oil. I feel this gives me better control over the conditioning. I like to use button and carpet thread to sew wallets. I would feel badly helping someone who pays five times more than a wallet is worth, just because it has a certain name stamped on it by a machine.

Right. Good work, but I guess it's not worth restoration unless it has some sort of sentimental value. I thought an expert could do better than I did (also saddle soap etc a few months ago - mine doesn't need sewing). Oh well. :\ Time to put "new wallet" on my shopping list, and put my old wallet "on ice". It's got sentimental value (it was a group gift from friends about 30 years ago). I was hoping to find something more effective. Eff it. :\
