8:12 nice to know one gas line can turn off

Nice. I have put some thought into getting a 2 burner. Wonder what the difference in gas use is compared to how fast everything melts
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
Well that I don't know, but You really only need 2 burners for forging. As you can see in the video once, I heated it up I turned off the second burner.

I Am getting one. To Melt 🫠 my copper, brass, aluminum, and so on. I have looked for a video on melting brass without flux can't find anything so u may give it a shot with and without. But thanks for the walkthrough 😃 now i know what to look forward to.
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
That's great! Definitely get new crucible tongs or make your own like I have in the video. I have a few videos coming out in the next few weeks where I melted brass. With a smaller furnace. I didn't use any flux.

so u add rigidizer from the stray bottle but you dont also add another layer of refractory cement? i see it done both ways
@HeinrichsMade15 күн бұрын
nope! I have added an IR Refractory coating which helps retain the heat. I'm not sure if it's necessary. However adding the rigidizer is very important due to the harmful fibers that you may breath in.

Can you melt glass in this too?
@HeinrichsMade2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure.. I've never melted glass. So far I have gotten this furnace to 2000F
@ChatterontheWire9 ай бұрын
for the price, may have to pick one up down the road, but not sure I need yet another one around, but would be nice having a light one vs the 5000 pound one I have now :)
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
Yeah it's SUPER CHEAP!!! It's huge and light weight. It definitely beats a 5000 pound furnace 😂
@theoriginalDirtybill9 ай бұрын
how much LP gas did you burn to melt that.
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
Not much... I don't measure how much I use. I just know that 20lbs of LP gas lasted me over a month using it.
@theoriginalDirtybill9 ай бұрын
@@HeinrichsMade good to know. the cost of propane has been the hold up with me getting or building a melting furnace. i would use a waste oil burner if i wasnt in a residential area.

@@theoriginalDirtybill how much does LP cost? A 20lb tank costs me $22 to fill

@@HeinrichsMade i havent bought propane in forever and a day, i fill my tanks at work for free. and my grill is hooked up to the NG off my house... but since washington has one of the highest gas taxes in the country i'm pretty sure its not cheap.

"Because this is a brand new crucible, I'm going to heat it up very slowly"... Immediately proceeds to heats it up very fast. FYI a slow 'proper heat' of a new crucible (according to e.g. manufacturers of "Mammut crucibles") should take about 2 hours to slowly ramp up to reach 200°C. Then it will have been safely dried and you can go nuts. A kiln or an oven is better suited for this than a gas furnace.
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
Yeah I only had the burner half open. It definitely heated up much faster than I would have liked. I usually put it in my house hold oven for 1hr. It worked out well in the video though, no issues. I've already used it a number of times since.

@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
Yeah buddy! I'll be using this for most of my videos now. I can pour more than 1 thing. Yeah I'd say it's as big as yours. It looks like it could fit a larger crucible as well.

The forge setting honestly seemed rather unimpressive, I expected better than that dull red.
@HeinrichsMade9 ай бұрын
If I left it in there longer I know it would have gotten there. Also, don't forget it is a large diameter furnace. Maybe bringing the steel higher and closer to the foam would heat it quicker.
@rickytickybobbywobbin0552 ай бұрын
If you’re referring to how hot the crucible and metal got, don’t forget that directly sunlight makes it look not as hot. Any knife maker will tell you they have at least once overheated a blade prior to quenching because they were in direct sunlight and miscalculated how hot their material was
@bow-tiedengineer44532 ай бұрын
@@rickytickybobbywobbin055 True, but I've done some blacksmithing in the sun. So I have that point of comparison, and our sad barely adequate homemade forge did at least that good.
@rickytickybobbywobbin0552 ай бұрын
@ fair enough. Could it be because of how large the furnace is compared to the small work piece? From what I understand, larger forges/furnaces are much less efficient with smaller pieces like that
@bow-tiedengineer44532 ай бұрын
@@rickytickybobbywobbin055 Probably. It's optimized for a crucible, not a small piece of steel, so it really isn't that great of a forge. That's what I was thinking when I first saw the video.
