I think the tire hits the wall at the same "spot" (if flattened to 2D) where a small projectile from the same angle would hit the back window (again, flattened from the camera perspective to 2D). Because there are sparks and other effects added when it hits the wall, it also looks like a hitting the back-window effect (a bit overdone, i.e. the glas reflects the explosion differently when broken) from a more projectile type metal from the same rough direction. Because it's janky and pretty fast, the illusion works for so many I have shown this clip.

The landing gear bouncing off of the wall like that is actually pretty realistic. If you look closely it's not just the wheel when it hits the wall, it's the entire leg of the plane and only one wheel bounces off. Having seen plenty of videos of the momentum of bouncing tires, the ricochet after the first hit from that tire tracks pretty well into real life. Having the leg hit solid brick or leaving a trail of dust would probably have been better though, just so it didn't seem like it went through the windshield

I think the problem with it is that once the landing gear hits the wall the tire become extremely clear and detailed which can trick the brain into thinking "oh this object is more clear because it has broken through the glass". I agree the physics are accurate. I also just noticed the tire after the hit also has a much deeper black than everything else in the scene.

Even as big as that tire was, it's still a rubber tire. The entire landing strut smacked into a stone building, the wheel then snapped off the strut at nearly the same velocity it had when it hit the wall, so being a tire, it *bounced* off the wall and right into the truck. Makes perfect sense if you've ever seen just how insane tires can act when they feel like it.
@badreddinekasmi8919
@badreddinekasmi8919 Жыл бұрын
I do agree with them however that they should have shown the tire for a little bit more. Possibly with a little bit less velocity. It just happens too fast for a lot of people to understand fully.
@asdqwe123610
@asdqwe123610 Жыл бұрын
But in order to cover the ground from the explosion to the actors as fast as it did it would have to be traveling EXCEEDINGLY fast. Something that heavy traveling that fast has a LOT of kinetic energy. Enough that it would either blow right through the wall, or if it did bounce off, do a LOT more damage to the vehicle then the little bonk that is shown.
@theninjamaster67
@theninjamaster67 Жыл бұрын
Okay so I've just looked this up and one of those tires is roughly 260 pounds also it just flew off a plane that crashed like what maybe just under a mile away in a matter of seconds 260 pounds flying that far that fast would rip a hole in the building. If you need an example of this literally just watch a How Ridiculous video of those those dudes dropping something heavy from a high height for instance in a video from a few months ago they dropped a 90 pound anvil from a 500 foot dam and it ripped a hole in the roof of a vehicle soooooo that should put into perspective how bullshit this scene was.
@sqw1881
@sqw1881 Жыл бұрын
@@theninjamaster67 There is a HUGE difference in something hitting for instance a roof directly from above, and a something hitting for instance a wall at an extremely low angel. Old time cannonballs fired on soldiers on a field would often bounce off the ground many times before stopping, but if it hit a castle wall it would go though it.

I recognise a lot of the buildings and scenery in the clips. as point of the skill of the people working the piece, when they are standing on that bridge , it's a real bridge, stretching over the river from Memorial Drive, the the downtown core, which was nicely blasted out. There are a few sites detailing where the shooting took place and the modifications to desolate the neighbourhoods. It's the impact on the building, it tricks people (me) into thinking it is smashing the glass instead of sparks. I'm right there with you, totally read that scene as something flying through the window. Considering how many people perceive the scene like that, I would out it on the artists more so than anything else. I totally didn't see what the VFX team intended either. The gear is dark and moving quickly, we don't all have our black levels set the same and the timing of it hitting the wall is just BAD. It's the VFX equivalent of drawing a tangent in a piece of 2D artwork... Cue optical illusion. When I saw the episode I didn't have the luxury of rewinding, so I just didn't know what caused the crash exactly and had to move on.

The Last of Us was filmed entirely in my province of Alberta, with a lot of it filmed in my hometown Calgary, especially the city and downtown scenes. The majority of the foreground was all practical set dec, but then they overlayed the mid/backgrounds with post-apocalypticness or just fully replaced it. So that first shot as you started the segment with them standing on the raised highway oeverpass, that was all real, even the buildings in the background (but with grunge added). Hey the they filmed this scene 8:15 in my street in Clagary. That is the address for the building they used for the "hotel" - 1202 1 St SW, Calgary. They closed out the street for a week or two and had big 3m walls around it with high screen cloth panels above. There were alot of pratical stuff in the set, most stuff you see on the ground level is practical for what I can tell.

I thought so too. Two out of three visual effects artists who are experts at reviewing movie shots thought it was debris from the explosion going through the rear winshield, yet it's a thousand to one in the comments (based on likes) who say they saw the few frames as they were intended to be seen. I don't buy it. I think there are a bunch of posers who just can't admit when they goofed up. Big props to all here. To Sam for his sharp eye catching it in real time, and to Niko and Clint for being so confident they can just shrug off getting something wrong and not be tripped up by it. That's integrity.

@@CorazonDeCristoCano LMAO, people aren't posers just because you feel bad you didn't catch it. 2 experts who got plenty of things wrong in the past and are possibly quite far from a TV don't indicate anything in comparison to other people. 3 people is such a small sample size compared to the comments. I'm sure you ask a bunch more people at their office and they would see the tire. It doesn't even make sense that a small object would hit Sarah AND flip the car, but not kill her.

OH wow haha. I'm with Clint and Niko - every time I've seen that scene I thought it was a soft-ball sized piece of debris, and the sparks of it hitting the wall were the glass of the rear window shattering as it broke through it. I didn't think it hit her in the head, it looked like it hit the back of the seat next to her. It makes much more sense now lol
@Caelinus
@Caelinus Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it needed to interact with the world more so you could see how big it is supposed to be. The angle it came at them made its size super ambiguous until it hits the wall, but at that point if you are already seeing a small object your brain interprets the wall hit wrong because you think the object is in a different spot than it was. Having it blast through something or skip off another car would have made it way more clear.
@Ayoul
@Ayoul Жыл бұрын
@@Caelinus Interacting with the world more would've maybe helped with comprehension for the minority that didn't see it was the landing gear (which I dunno to me is extremely obvious), but it also would've had the effect of making it look extremely goofy and even more of a weird coincidence that it hit them.
@Caelinus
@Caelinus Жыл бұрын
@@Ayoul It does not really need to do much interaction, even just making it pass through a volumetric smoke effect might have been enough. Burning Car -> Smoke -> Gear would have given you a size and position reference. Changing the perspective of the shot would be the most ideal solution, but I hardly think they are going to redo that big of a shot, costing millions, just because an object is a little weird looking. Honestly they may have even tried some stuff, but nothing looked right. It was moving very fast, so there was not a lot of time to communicate it's position. Maybe having a corner skip off a pole as it passed? Or potentially having it bounce off the ground instead of the wall to simplify the angles? Not sure.

@AbdullaFilmAS
@AbdullaFilmAS Жыл бұрын
@@Axxidous they obviously aren't that good at catching details then because this isn't even a detail, it's just really obvious. Just from common sense it's also obvious it's not the case, because even if it were just a couple of inches thick it came at a very high speed, would've 100% killed her if it were the case. it flew like 500m in 3 seconds which gives it a speed of 600 km/h or 370 mph, i'm not saying you could do the equation in your head but knowing it was like 500m away and seeing how short of a time it took for it to travel the distance it's really obvious it's fast enough to kill her. I'd also like to add that for this "illusion" to work the physics needs to be seriously fucked up and a show with a production cost of over 100 million wouldn't mess that up. So based on those factors you should just naturally exclude the fact that it's a small piece going through the back window. from there if you use your eyes you can clearly see it's the wheels from the plane. And also the back window of the car doesn't even shatter so how the fuck would it have gone into the car?

It happens so fast and because of the perspective, i really thought it was a bit of shrapnel weirdly breaking through the back window. It’s almost unfortunate because it seems like most people saw it the wrong way and it slightly takes away from an otherwise amazing scene if you didn’t see what was really happening. Actually with the way the wheel comes off of the metal rod and how it was rotating around a central axis before impacting the wall, I think it impacting at a slight angle and deflecting off into the truck next to it makes a lot of sense because rotationally the tire's momentum was taking it straight into the wall. Still a bit goofy but wanted to throw my opinion of the physics into the ring

The matte paintings in TLoU are greate, but there were still a couple of shots where it looked like matte painting. It would be fun if you could compare some of the composits of matte paintings, especially in TV shows. I remember when I was rewatching Sons of Anarchy I noticed how many compositing it had. There are some infamous, janky scenes (especially in the last season), but then I noticed how often the backgrounds were matte paintings. Or they even sometimes composited Ron Pearlman riding a motorcycle.

I also genuinely saw that debris from the plane as being inside the car. I feel it has something to do with the timing of the pan and when it hits the wall, feels like it breaks the back window. Now it’s pointed out, I can willingly see it both ways if I concentrate one over the other, but I still see it as if it’s in the car for the most part.
