For “They Shall Not Grow Old” the filmmakers also looked at the soldiers’ uniforms to determine what part of Britain they were from. They then hired voice actors from those regions to voice those specific soldiers.

This was the movie that introduced me to motion capture. So before I knew that fact, I thought it looked way too expressionless for an animated movie (except the hobo and the engineers, thinking back on it). When I was told a week after what was going on behind the scenes, it blew my mind as a 9-year old that those were real people moving around being later "turned into cartoons."

Just now realized how brutal the title is. Literally "These men will die young." What excellent, horrifying description of WWI.
@SunflowerSpotlight
@SunflowerSpotlight 4 жыл бұрын
Jesse Clark It’s also a line in a famous poem about WWI that is amazing. For the Fallen, by Lawrence Bunyan. It gets used a lot around Remembrance Day. “They fell with their faces toward the foe. / They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; / age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. / at the going down of the sun and in the morning / we will remember them. .... To the end, to the end, they remain.” There’s more stanzas to it than that, and I referenced it wonkily, not full stanazas. There is some stunning imagery. I highly recommend it. As an editor, I’ve come across quite a few bits of work inspired by this poem. To me it’s up there with In Flanders Field (by John McCrae) as the ultimate poetry inspired by war. That niche requires a lot of things to happen in a short amount of time and it needs to be balanced, the horror of war, the sadness at the loss, the need to fight (depending on the war) either to survive or because its the right thing to do, the soldiers’ experiences, the worry of those back home, the suffering of the wounded, the bravery of knowing sacrifice, honoring those woh died. It’s a complex sub-genre, which is why really well written war poetry can hit people so powerfully. The title of the movie, while a bit long for modern film, was really superbly chosen by Peter, I think. If you know the poem, it’s INSTANTLY evoked, all of those feelings get transferred to the movie, immediately you feel more involved and are more likely to see it or share the trailer. If someone doesn’t know the poem, it hits them as being a bit morbid, but undeniably old-world in its phrasing, so it still stands out. Peter’s really had some missteps, but when he’s at his best, it’s rarely eclipsed.

"They Shall Not Grow Old" is astonishing. I believe that not only did they do the lip reading that they mention in this video but they also allowed for Regional accents and dialects based on the different battalions etc It is an amazing, powerful and haunting piece of film making that will live with you long after you watch it. In the UK they showed it on Remembrance Day 2018 as it was the Centenary. It really brings home the reality of the 1st World War, the initial sense of adventure and derring do and the harsh reality. Thereare some really harrowing shots of injuries, death, decay and disease as well as the terrifying power of the weapons - the dome of earth thrown up by one explosion/mine and the tilesof the building shaking and trembling as they fire a howitzer. Everyone should watch it.
@howitzer551
@howitzer551 4 жыл бұрын
Your right about the accents thing. As another cool side notes a bunch of the songs which were actually sung by the troops in life were not added till the movie was almost done. Peter Jackson needed something to fill certain parts of the movies but didn't like a lot of the music they had tried already. So the BBC sent him the lyrics to a bunch of the songs, but being in New Zealand no one had the right accent so they went to the British Consulate and got a bunch of random guys to sing them so it would sound like average soldiers taking a break instead of professional singers. Also Niko is right the effect is used for more than just showing off they could do it, the color is for the story telling of the movie. In fact they actually get the colors on the some of the tanks and vehicles wrong because there references are from later but similar looking models after the war that were a different color, but that obviously isn't the point. EVERYONE should see this movie, it is a masterpiece and I am so glad they gave it attention.
@Ajsandborg
@Ajsandborg 4 жыл бұрын
Also i liked how when the movie goes from the "training" to the front lines, there starts this constant rumble in the background. Artillery etc. And that background rumble only stops fully when the war stops. A nice idea and i didn't even notice it at first, but it makes the movie feel more real since that's probably what the men at the trenches really heard all day long.

The scene where they first enter Narnia when the water breaks through the painting frame and floods the room I've heard the room was built and submerged in a pool, but I'd love to see a critical analysis.
