The way they did the shot for "The Expanse" is they had a helicopter fly over the water and a bit of the city, and then they do a camera handoff from the helicopter to a crane, which lowers the camera down, and then gets passed off to the camera guy who then takes the shot home to Amos. Wes Chatham explains this process in the aftershow for 502 over on the Amazon channel, and the director of the episode confirmed that's exactly what they did.

I would love to see a whole episode dedicated to the 6 Transformers films to go more in depth with the rigging, animation, rendering, and compositing. Aside from some janky compositing in the 4th one (I specifically remember a shot of Galvatron in the highway fight scene where it looks like he was just pasted on top of the footage), the vfx in those movies are some of my absolute favorites.
@thirdeyenz

I worked on a Transformers game and we received some of the Maya models from the movie (Revenge of the Fallen) and they were intense. They'd take forever to load and then you could look at something like an eye and pull it apart and there would just be layer upon layer upon layer of complex parts making up one eye. Craziest thing I ever saw. No rigs were included though sadly but I believe they had a layered system where you could basically move and rotate any part you wanted. And of course the transformations were all smoke and mirrors sadly.
@exaulted2331
@exaulted2331 2 жыл бұрын
@@thirdeyenz That's awesome! Yeah I've read in several places that the transformations weren't "real" in terms of every panel in robot mode is 1:1 with a panel in vehicle mode. That doesn't diminish how cool the animations looked at all in my book tho. I heard them described as "lovecraftian" in a video and I think that sums it up pretty well. Oh and speaking of the games, I'd kill for a new 3rd person hero shooter based in the Bayverse. The ROTF and DOTM games were both awesome and I think combining the best aspects of both would make for an incredible game.

The first Transformers scenes are so hacky and cheaty, if you watch them frame by frame, which I had to when I got my own assignment "we need a robot just like those transformer things". Lots of stuff sliding through each other or dissapearing, or just flat out rigged incorrectly.
@DarthBiomech
@DarthBiomech 2 жыл бұрын
@@Aegis_Mind Well it helps immensely that car barely has any moving parts. My robot was just folding on itself to become vaguely car-shaped, while all the polygon details on it played their own baked-out animation of sliding between two poses they need to have on either the car or on the robot. If the animation of the details played without the animation of the robot body folding up, the end result was very mangled up.

It's similar to rocket jumps video essay about how you don't notice CGI, just bad CGI. As much as people claim that CGI should be rarely used, it helps in a lot of little ways. Instead of shutting down several blocks of a road because your shot needs to look down it, you can just cap it off with a green screen wall. Perfect building exterior but can't film walking inside? Recreate the entrance as a facade with green screens extending off, and you can composite the shots. Even fixing reflections and crew standing in the shot.

Wes Craven talked about a shot he did in one of the Scream movies (maybe the first one?) that is similar to the end of the Expanse shot here. He said that it was a crane shot, but that instead of the crane just holding the camera, it held a camera operator with a steadicam, who just walked off of the platform when it got to the ground. Edit: Looks like that's a pretty common technique now: "steadicam crane walk-off".

Some of the actors and production crew of the Expanse talk about how the Baltimore shot was done in an after show video on amazon's youtube channel. @peacemaster8117

I think it was afforded extra effort to give the moment gravitas, likely because 1. It was an establishing shot for a location they were going to use over several episodes 2. It was our first time seeing that side of life on Earth
@RyoMassaki
@RyoMassaki 2 жыл бұрын
You think it is an unremarkable shot, but it is just one of many high quality shots that the show-makers deliberately created for the series. There are a number of these kind of environmental shots in the series that are longer than they need to be - from an financial and logistical perspective, but they absolutely serve an artistic purpose, but it is one that isn't obvious and which is kinda subtle. In movies and shows it is usual to hold an establishing shot of an new location for at least 2 maybe 4 seconds. This is the average amount of time the viewer needs to get locked mentally into the new location. But if you do it like this all the time - especially with an repeating similar shot from a similar perspective and you only use the same one to introduce an location, the viewer might get the impression (subconsciously) that it is all just an movie set, something like an potemkin village that only works visually from on perspective. This is especially true in SciFi and Fantasy settings, when the long distance establishing shot shows an sprawling and dense space, but then the actual location with the actors is kinda small and less dense. Having a long seamless establishing shot, that moves from aerial perspective to ground level gives a seamless impression of an large and real space and that makes the world bigger. The bigger and grander the mental map is that the viewer is able to build in his mind while watching, the better the immersion is, especially if the viewer know how these spaces connect and relate to each other. There are many shots in the series that do exactly that and from an movie making perspective - they are pure luxury. But from an artistic perspective they are like an very expensive glue that makes the world(s) stick together better.

@@RyoMassaki Generally speaking I get that rationale, the thing is it's just a really unremarkable city, it wouldn't even need any establishing shots, let alone a complex hero shot like this. If it was for example a shot of mars, a Belter station or let's say the opening of Blade Runner it would be one thing. The shot in Blade Runner immediately draws you in and tells you a lot about that world. But all this establishing shot tells me is that, oh he is in a random city I guess. Which I find is especially jarring considering how atmospheric and dense everything looks the second you get closer to the ground. Once you see the square where he is in, they do a fantastic job of visual storytelling and you immediately learn a lot about the location. You actually get to take in the detail and get a feel for it. You could have just spent the time having a camera following him while he walks through the street and it would have given you a much better impression of the location. So bottom line you have just spent a lot of time and money planning and executing a shot that not only doesn't tell me anything, it arguably detracts from the shot that comes after it.
@RyoMassaki
@RyoMassaki 2 жыл бұрын
@@Antares-dw9iv It didn't felt detracting to me, quite the opposite and it was not only the establishing shot for the location but also for the character Amos, which we haven't seen for a while and it also was the first time the show took some time to show the situation on the ground (on earth). They also already did these exact kind of long establishing shots in a Belter Station and on Mars before. The whole show started with a 1-2 minute long seamless establishing shot through one of the stations. None of these shots was a necessity to tell the story, they indulged in that luxury because they wanted to for that little-bit of extra atmosphere and I agree with that artistic choice. I would have done the same. I can however totally understand how you feel that it is wasted on you.
