Yeah but not in Infinity War. In my opinion the Ironman suit looks so bad and unreal in Infinity War. In the first and the second Ironman it was just CGI if he's flying or for the details so they matched the real armour with the CG armour. But in Infinity War it's just made with motion-capture and it looks so bad and unreal.

I coom for all those moving parts and all the little clinks and clacks of the parts fitting together. Tony's first series of armors were the greatest visually. Iron Man 1 has always been one of the ones that impressed me the most and really inspired me for some of my own attempts at composite work. Then along came Hulk in Avengers, and I was like WHAT... They had an actual Cloth Skin overlayed on the model to make the skin react correctly, his pores were actually part of the scan of Mark Ruffalo, then they added additional pores after the fact! It's beyond incredible.
@ToomanyFrancis3 жыл бұрын
7:30 that looks so good because it's real. The mask is real, the robots putting the mask on him is CG, but they actually made a mechanical Iron Man mask that drops like that. A lot of the Iron Man suit is real too, pretty much just joints are CG. Edit: I'll also mention that at some point Robert Downey Jr. told Marvel Studios that he didn't want to wear the suit anymore, so it is entirely mo-cap CG for some movies, but the first Iron Man movie has a lot more practical effects than you'd expect from the MCU now.

Jon Favreau has a weird career trajectory as a director. In his early years, he was a big champion of practical effects. When I was a kid, I basically fell in love with the effects on Zathura, and that was where I realized how much I preferred it. Fast-forward to today, and he's known for The Jungle Book and The Lion King, the latter of which was literally nominated for "Best Animated Feature" at the Globes.

Probably a bit late to the party here being 8 months later, but wasn't one of the reasons behind him wanting to go full mo-cap because Ruffalo felt a bit ostracized being the only one out of the Avengers group necessitating being completely CG? If I recall correct, RDJ was hugely empathetic towards Ruffalo, because he was made fun of because he didn't "look" like a hero, and RDJ knew of his stature enough that if *he* did something, then others would quickly follow. I definitely remember Ruffalo being made fun of because he was the only one in spandex with ping-pong balls, around a group of people who had bows, and shields, and guns... I love him as the hulk, and as an actor in general regardless.

Honestly, I don't think she was "supposed to" have hit the ground. The panel of the comics it references, she definitely doesn't, and if the death was supposed to be due to cranial impact, you would expect a shot of him pulling his hand out from behind her head with blood on it (even if they don't explicitly show the wound). I'll give you that going through it frame-by-frame, it certainly looks like she does. But I suspect that's unintended.

There's also a sense of awe with the good special effects that some people might omit, and some insight into what makes special effects look good or bad. They really do not look outdated even today.

It was an ingenious combination of practical and cgi. when the heroes were sword fighting orcs in close up shots they were real actors in amazing makeup and costumes. CGI was mostly used for long establishing shots to show us scale and numbers. Jackson knew cgi up close at the time wasn't great (Gollum being the exception where they put a ton of work into just him and even then he looks dated now in some shots.) so when they used it the camera was far away. For shots of armies they would have the first few lines of soldiers be actors and then as it gets further away they used cgi for the rest which gave a realistic feel of scale (Game of Thrones has used this as well which is why their battles look astounding).
@asobibuddy84815 жыл бұрын
LoTR had a lot of practical effects. F.e. to make the Hobbits look small, they build the sets in weird angles, so filming from a specific perspective make them look smaller than Gandalf. In the Hobbit trilogy Jackson just said "fuck it" and made everything a green screen with shitty CGI.
@mister_xenomorph5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's absolutely astonishing that the CGI in the LoTR trilogy still holds up almost two decades down the cinematic road. There are a couple wonky shots, for sure (Legalos and the oliphaunts, anyone?), but only a few. The rest are simply golden and often look better than most CGI scenes in films today (my jaw still drops just seeing the Balrog swathed in flame).
@asobibuddy84815 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with modern films is that the people in charge don't care for them anymore. Using LoTR as an example, Building all these sets and thinking about ways to film scene s in a certain way to help with the post-CGI requires thoughts and work. But Jackson didn't care for the Hobbit, those movies were nothing but a cash grab, so he went "well, can't we just do that scene in front of a greenscreen and put in all the stuff later? i want this shit wrapped up before 5 o'cock" It's not a matter of time in most cases and the CG is sometimes even more expensive than building sets, but if you're a lazy director, its a blessing for your movie.

Thank you for bringing up the physics of the actual people. In that shot of avengers, he would realistically have passed out from the G's, his organs would have compressed, and he would have serious damage in his spinal column. Or when superman catches someone, the sudden change would most likely snap the persons neck. That's why I like Quicksilver in the X men films. He Braces people before running around with them. He has learned throughout the years to throw things X fast and X hard so It doesn't just explode from suddenly being moved that fast. I especially like the scene where the school explodes. He throws people into water, cushions, anything to break their fall. Really smart.
@jameswiz2 жыл бұрын
When the suit catches iron man, it doesn't just stop, but moves on a "rounded" trajectory, so his forces are reduced. He could pass out for sure... But humans can live through a ton of g forces.. in the 1940's a rocket sled test pilot survived over 46G's... The average rate of fall for a human, based on gravity and the drag from the air, make humans fall at around 120mph... So he's not going all that fast. He probably felt 10g's or so, but would live with little or no ill effects.
@kifleyesusmisgun98532 жыл бұрын
He is flying in back in a curved line if you look at it. Because first he slowed down with his thrusters from his hand. Then he changed his body position from feet to head falling, to head to feet stand. While he does that there is curve. He switch his foot thrusters on when he is mid curve to standing and flying back. So his organs are not dropping straight instead they are following the curve. So tony would feel the Gs of the momentum but not dye from it. But it is a small curve to be notice.

When Iron Man broke his fall by blasting away with his thrusters, the first thing I had to think about was the poor people below him. they would've been baked and blasted away at the same time if that much force was directed down at them. Remember the Messerschmitt 262? That thing of course weighed much more than Iron man, but it couldn't accelerate as fast either... so would it be fair to say the engines have comparable total final thrust to Iron Man's? Anyway, the Me-262 went from being a tail-dragger design to having tricycle landing gear, because it literally melted the runway. You do NOT want to be near the exhaust of a running jet or rocket engine. EDIT: now I think about it, I wanna see an R-rated version of that scene after all. I know you found better scenes, but Iron Man saving himself could be a masterpiece of unintended consequences.
@weirdguygaming88573 жыл бұрын
It was more like saving them too....he wud survive that fall in the suit....but those dudes being squished by a metal suit with that acceleration......they dead. I think they shudhve had him shoot a beam towards his right so he falls to the ground BESIDE them and so he lives n so do they n no physics issue

@ericyt75895 жыл бұрын
in ALL of the iron man movies, you see him shrug off falls and weapon impacts that would actually be fatal. something doesnt have to breach his suit to kill him. and on that note, we dont really get to see how strong the armor actually IS - we never see him shot with anti-armor weaponry. lots of explosives and rifle-caliber bullets, but no shaped-charge or sabot rounds. stand him in front of an abrams main gun, and he would have a hole blown straight through him. later suits can be hand-waved better with him adding better (presumably active) protection. note the scene in civil war where rhodey's iron patriot suit gets its power knocked out and the injuries he takes from his fall.
@lambchop5185 жыл бұрын
YES! Also, not to mention he was just thrown through laminated glass that is an inch or more thick and remained conscious and mostly unscathed The aorta thing, I think the suit uses the same tech as his repulsors (hand cannons) to absorb trauma and stuff, so it's plausible, without the suit he's only human!

10:21 I wish they'd commented on the VFX in _this_ scene! I think it looks pretty good, plus the colour choices are great!

The Rules of Inertia. Yes Superman can catch a freefalling person, just think about a Hacky Sack, he just has to match their speed and velocity of descent and then within 1 to 3 G Forces decelerate and lower them safely or change directions to a safe landing place. Iron Man would obviously have a Gyroscopic controlled Internal Pressure system to regulate and counter measure G-Forces and also a Free Suspension Chasis that insulates from the Cockpit, seperated by the mechanism that absorbs forces preventing stress on his body. Probably also coated the interior with a soft foam that softens impact to avoid breaks, contusions and abrasions. Fighter Pilots face these conditions and the human body can endure these maneuvers like Iron Man, albeit in a more spacious cockpit because of steering and ejection, since tgey can't crash land in their vehicles. But Iron Man has a suit designed to in canon work to accomplish those feats. But it would be better if movies used the correct physics to better show off their super abilities.

Iron Man starts his decel at like 2 stories up and stops maybe 7 feet from the ground. I would expect he had about 7 to 10 feet of slowing down which he could easily survive and maybe just be a bit uncomfortable given that's less than a second of decel

There's NO WAY that's a closed head wound with that much force either. THAT'S the real magic of CG, they'd have to CG the back of her head back on.

The average terminal velocity for a human is around 120-140 MPH of course depending on the persons weight. The average human can take 6g's for about 3 seconds before blacking out. Certain pilots without Special suits can take more but average pilots can take up to 9 with special suits mabey more. The highest G-force experience ever survived was 214 but that was horizontal not vertical which humans have a higher tolerance for. A pilot in a rocket sled took 46.2 but i don't know if that was vertical or horizontal plus he was properly strapped in since it was a rocket sled. Now with all that in mind say he went from 140 to 0 in the span of human visual reaction. That would be around 25 G's how he does more of a very tiny loop at the bottom so I would not say he stopped in 1 second but I would say it was slower than human visual reaction at 0.25 seconds. At double human visual reaction that is 13 G's, at three times that is 8 g's And at 1 second that is 6 G's. Now if I had to guess due to that small loop form he does at the bottom i would say around double so 13 G's and if his suit inside is anything like a fighter pilots G-suit he could definitely withstand that kind of force and even if he couldn't that would only be within black-out range not death range as they say. This all while considering there are people who have jumped out of planes and had chutes not pop and end up surviving (with huge injuries) after hitting the hard ground without a small loop.

it'd be cool to see a "VFX Artists React to Pioneering CGI", where you guys could give us a brief history of CGI by showing/discussing some of the most game changing moments in VFX history. regardless, love the content. keep up the great work fellas
