Pacific Rim 1 and 2 is like OG Evangelion and remake. They removed the weight. They removed the calmer overview shots of the Eva's. They're Power rangers instead of giant mecha suits. Like things don't need to be faster and flashier, things can be slow and heavy too yet awesome too. Weight in animation is important guys!
@noesunyoutuber7680
@noesunyoutuber7680 3 жыл бұрын
At least the Rebuild of Evangelion is clearly trying to be more of the super robot show 90's NGE was supposed to be a deconstruction of. It's kinda justified because it's meant to be less gritty and more stylized (whether or not that's appropriate for a series like NGE is a whole other question). When the Evas are moving like something human scale, that's just operating by Mazinger Z rules instead of military hardware rules. The Pacific Rim sequel was supposed to be a followup with a comparable tone, but it's running Mazinger Z rules in a military hardware setting.

I gotta say, the second Matrix movie doesn't hold up as well as the first. I can't be the only person who doesn't feel this way, right? The second one felt like they went overboard on the CGI. Not that there aren't some decent scenes in there, but it really felt like most of the fight scenes were clearly CGI, as opposed to the scene they talked about which honestly doesn't look CGI beyond the Neo character. At least not on first glance AND with repeated viewing, IMO.

For the bad ones, I'd love to see less "this is bad for lacking X technique", and more of "here's the systemic/procedural process in the industry that leads to things being this bad". Obviously, no one tries to be bad in their work. But sometimes compromises are made via budget, creative direction, etc. More exploration of that would be fascinating.

Other VFX people have spoken out over this already. VFX companies bid on movies to work on and movie producers pick the cheapest to get the job. The low asking prices force the VFX artists to work long hours with not enough manpower on movies that are increasingly reliant on CGI making up the run time. Even without reshoots to worry about the staff are forced to spend less time on each scene causing the end result to look worse. This causes a high turnover as skilled VFX artists move into other fields like making cgi for corporate presentations which results in a brain drain in the movie industry.

I didn't think about the CG camera that you mentioned, where it whizzes from shot to shot, whereas the first looks more hand-heled, it's one of those things you pick up on and somehow know something is wrong, but can't put your finger on it. God, hobbit was such dog poop. (Didn't they already do a Hobbit though?) And I LOVED the Hobbit book. Read about the production history problems behind Hobbit, it was horrible. The movie studio ran the director so hard he didn't even have shots figured out. He would have to make a set, tell everyone to take a lunch, and then figure it all out while they left. He shot from the seat of his pants and the later two movies really show and fall apart. It's called "The Hobbit" and the main character is practically a cameo in his own movie series.

7:25 I think it might have something to do with the square-cube law. The force of a muscle scales with the square of linear dimensions (cross sectional area) but mass increases with the cube of linear dimensions. So imagine a person swings their arm. Their muscles provide force 'f' to move a mass 'm' and it takes some amount of time 't' to move a distance 'd'. So d = 0.5(f/m)t^2 or t = √ (2dm/f) Now imagine the same person but the physical dimensions have been doubled. The force is quadrupled (F = 4f), the mass is octupled (M = 8m) and the distance is doubled (D = 2d) so T = √ (2DM/F) = √ (8dm/f) = 2√ (2dm/f) = 2t (The 2x upscaled person takes twice as long to cover the same range of motion) Also the way things move depends a lot on gravity since the downward stroke of any movement will just let gravity take over. In this case t = √ (2d/g) and doubling the dimensions leaves 'g' unchanged so T = √ (4d/g) = (√ 2)√ (2d/g) = approx 1.4t (The 2x upscaled person takes about 1.4 times as long to fall the same relative distance) Of course, reality is messier but these facts might be the reason for our intuition that bigger things should be more ponderous.

Thank you for talking about pacific rim 2 vs the horrible sequel. The first movie is one of my favorite kaiju movies. Del toro nailed the slow weighty get powerful movements. It also really helped that most of the gifting is at night/under deep water, but I don’t mind it so much because the neon lighting ascetic was a really cool visual look. It also helps they had a lot of oratcial effects like the inside of the cockpits and the jager suits too. Some recent of the more recent Godzilla movies definitely overused the dark/obscuring mist too much, but at least recent movies have done a bit better there. Pacific rim 2, made them feel too weightless, too agile. Looks like a video game. Doesn’t make you feel their size.

the matrix multi camera shot i've seen done using mobile phones. we used to have a show called 'the gadget show' here in the uk on tv, and they recreated the shot using mobile phones, it was epic. i love the tidbits i didnt know about the morphs, and the texturing with photos reminds me of how a lot of PS1 games were textured back then. with the shadows and light literally part of the texture, and there being no ''real'' light. Silent Hill does it really well. using photos works so good, even for people. myst 5 put footage of peoples faces on the character odels, and it looked so real. its amazing. and i think even now, small indipendant studios, can get some proffesional stuff done using the photo effect. look at google maps. its low poly as heck, but it still looks real because...it is.

Maybe you could do actors de-aged or aged in movies through CGI.
