Speaking as a deconstructed, but still-believing Christian who sadly grew up in a conservative evangelical environment, I honestly think it's really cool that this show taught kids that God still loves them even if they have doubts. Like... a big thing in evangelical Christian circles is that people are expected to be careful of their thoughts and to keep this unwavering faith and gratitude even in the worst of times, lest they "upset God." At the same time they love to preach that when bad things happen to you, it's probably because you did something to offend God and need to repent and change your life. This can lead to hardcore religious OCD and anxiety down the line. That's why it's so refreshing to see a Christian kids' show say "Hey. God's not punishing you. Even if you might be mad at God, God's not mad at you. God still loves you."

I didn't think I would find someone who watched this show as a child. I really agree with your point here. It's not a super extreme Christian show, it's kinda gentle.

@@freak_812 I'd only ever seen this show like once or twice on TV as a kid lol. I just think this was a lovely message.

This vhs echoes my grandma's beliefs on Christianity, in that religion is not to be used as a tool for hatred, but rather as a healthy coping mechanism, and a way to find forgiveness (but not forgetfulness) for the actions of others. In short, my grandma and I use christianity as a way to easier forgive others, as well as ourselves.

@@freak_812 Yeah, that's why I’ve heard Christians talk about following Jesus rather than Christianity itself, because of multiple ungodly things Christianity has been used to excuse.

"I love you, friends. Remember: keep wondering, keep dreaming, 'cause that's how you grow. After a while, crocodile!" At least that's how I remember his outro. It's been a long since I've watched Gerbet.

@@freak_812 Like I said, it’s been so long since I’ve watched it that my memories are a bit fuzzy. I remember he had some superhero alter-ego called Captain Towel, I think. No idea what his superpower was, though.

As a Christian one thing that makes me sad is the perception that kids will consume any colorful media regardless of how well made it is and how much tought is put behind it. TBF it's more of a broader problem, just look at any KZbin Kids content farm, but it's so good to see a show that manages to convey a good message in a cleaver way while also being entertaining. Thanks for finding this!!!

Man if you'd asked me to name all puppet characters from my childhood, _no way_ would I have dredged Gerbert up from my memories, but I did see this show a few times as a kid (would've been ~9 when it came out, no clue when/where I saw it though). I think I remember the "late waking up" bit the most, and don't remember the song at all so probably just caught it channel-browsing one day on cable. I agree it's a pretty great puppet design, even though nowadays I'm kinda disgusted at Christians using this sort of content to brainwash kids about religion.
