Bhīṣma ēkādaśi is celebrated on śukla ēkādaśi in māgha māsa every year. It is the day when bhīṣma, lying on a bed of arrows, revealed the viṣṇu sahasranāma to the Pandavas, in the presence of Lord śrī kṛṣṇa. The viṣṇu sahasranāma stōtra is considered to be very powerful and regularly chanting and meditating on the stotram believed to lead to mōkṣa or the liberation.
Ekādaśī vratam refers to fasting on the days of ēkādaśī tithi in every pakṣa. From a scientific point of view, fasting regularly is proved to be good for health, as it gives rest to all organs, overhauls the system and eliminates toxins from the body. Thus fasting twice a month on ēkādaśī tithi, one gets not only health benefits, but also cleanses his body and mind. Of all the ēkādaśi days, some of them are considered more auspicious and bhīṣma ēkādaśi, due to its significance to the viṣṇu sahasranāma stōtra is considered more auspicious for fasting and meditation.
