November gale, the Witch of November, or November Witch, refers to the strong winds that frequently blow across the Great Lakes in autumn. The "witches" are caused by intense low atmospheric pressure over the Great Lakes pulling cold Canadian/Arctic air from the north or northwest and warm Gulf air from the south.

Growing up on the eastern shore, in Michipicoten Bay November was the storm month. We would go down to the camp to watch the show. So quite often we would find the waves had come up 100' on the beach, tossing huge logs onto the blueberry bushes in front of the camps. More than a few steam bath houses had logs driven into them, built right on the edge of the beach, 100' from the water edge. Some of the waves were enormous in the 60's and 70's , 15-20 footers rolling in.

Hey Mike, and all the global Boat Friend Nation, from a cold, snowy and very windy Bismarck. Now this is the real “ Witch of November comes Slashing”!!!! This is dangerous weather to be on the Big Lake., and most likely most boats are hunkered down if possible. You can see the huge whitecaps on the Lake and how these waves travel down the Guantlet of the Canal and coming very closely to topping the top of the canal walls themselves. Imagine trying to get through the canal with this much force to deal with? Those waves have built up over a lot of miles, and we see the end result with the waves smashing against the rocks. The force is unbelievable and as cold as it is with wind chill, it literally goes right through you and stings your face. I have seen this myself, and believe me it gets your attention, and the boats and sailors that ply the Great Lakes for a living deal with this every day. You must respect the “Witch”, and this video gives you a little idea what she is capable of. Hats off Mike for braving this weather, but we both know she can be much, much worse than this! Beautiful video, later my Brother, be safe…………

If ships are scheduled to come in and the weather is like this, do they wait it out or come in? Great video!
@vibewithmikeМинут бұрын
It’s always Captain’s discretion, but they really play it safe. It is a narrow area that canal. However, I have seen Captains come in with weather similar to that.

Not a good day for Boat Friends. Wonder how big the waves are on the lake? Thanks Mike
@vibewithmikeСағат бұрын
I think they’re around 12 feet someone was saying. There’s a possibility that the friends snowman comes out tomorrow because there could be snow.
