The 140 foot tug G.L. Ostrander & 460 foot barge Integrity made a nighttime arrival in Duluth, MN. The captain immediately started swinging the powerful spotlight around as the 100+ person crowd watched from the north pier. The captain surprised us and started switching the bow lights on/off like it was a party as the vessel moved through the ship canal. This happens at the 2:36 mark in the video. That was cool!
This Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) has a great looking pilot house that was shining bright with lights as well. It was fun to watch and record for you.

Quite a variety of ports the GL Ostrander visited in 2022: Detroit - 23 (supplied cement to build the Gordie Howe bridge), Alpena 15 (primary source of its cement), Milwaukee 10, Toledo 10, Cleveland 8, Calumet Harbor 6

Mike, this is one of the best vessels to watch coming into port at night. Her spot is so cool looking! Especially as it beams from high atop the bridge. The tug was renamed G. L. Ostrander in 2002 after an executive at Lafarge North American Inc. It actually took me quite a bit of research to confirm this. Kind of makes sense. If you freeze the video at 6:30 and look carefully at the right bridge supports, you can actually see two distinct sets of vertical supports. The outermost support is orginal and was built in between 1901-1905. The inside support system was added in 1929 when they changed the bridge to a lift bridge (from a bridge which used a neat gondola car).

Hey Mike. Love these late night videos. I am suprised at the number of people who were out to see her. Thank you for moving down so we could see better. Those bow lights are very cool on The Integrity. Just an all around great looking vessel. The GLO is good looking as well. I always love to see how the captain handles the turn when they get to the harbor basin so thank you for hanging with the shot. I hope you had a good day for a Thursday. Take care my friend and hope we can chat later in the comments. 🙋‍♀⛴

I find it interesting that they don't stop pedestrian traffic under the lift bridge when it is being raised or lowered on the canal walk. Thanks for the explanation of the symbol on the side of the vessel. I wondered what that was for! Always learning something new! Thanks Mike!

There's plenty of room to walk under the bridge when it's down. It's a walkway all the time. It feels weird going under because the cars are driving over your head on grates rather than solid road. It has a distinct sound.

Yes, as a parent, I cannot fathom their rather blase' attitude when it comes to so-called Common Sense and Safety issues. Contrary to popular belief, we're NOT infallible like some may believe. And that Icy Cold water is Very UNforgiving, once our bodies make contact with it. Never allow your child...or daring adults, do a Balancing Act on the wall of the canal. It should be a No-Brainer, but some feel 'Bullet Proof'...please, don't learn the 'Hard Way'.

Heaven forbid, if you were right there and were to make any comment to the parent, concerning the child's safety, they'd get extremely defensive, and tell anyone to mind their own business. Some people simply should never have children! No doubt, my comment rubbed somebody the wrong way, but stick around...my OCD really comes through, whenever I see this sort of thing! Have a fantastic weekend.

Hello Mike...Excellent Commentary of this Really Unique articulated Tug & Barge combination. I've only heard of this type of configuration, on how raw sugar cane is transported from Hawaii to C & H for processing, in California. Is this a new concept, for Great Lakes vessels? There must be only a few of them. Any further information is appreciated. Thanks!

Collated tug and barge combination is one of the most interesting ship designs I know of the upper pilot House is used when the tug is attached to the barge so that the captain or pilot can see over the long cargo deck. When the two vessels are separate, the tug will be steered from the lower pilot house.

The lift bridge seems to go up very early with the ships still a good way off. Is there a specific reason for this?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue? These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s a incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️

That flashing light on the bow masthead is a special requirement for barges over a certain length and several other criteria. It can vary by how it's being towed or pushed....and by what type of vessel. Of course, navigation light rules are complex...and they are for a reason- safety. This type of vessel is covered in the Federal Lighting Code § 83.24 Towing and pushing (Rule 24).
