⚓️Heavy-duty transport: Unique Vessel “Champlain” speeds for Duluth Lift Bridge!

Livestream of the 140-foot tugboat “Samuel de Champlain” and 460-foot barge “Innovation” arriving under the Aerial Lift Bridge from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. This vessel has to be the most unique looking on the Great Lakes. It almost looks futuristic.
The large barge is fully loaded with cement powder from Michigan. This video is unscripted and live! Let’s see what happens together!

Mike mentioned the aft windows being tilted downward. On vessels of all types, from small boats to large ships, some pilot/wheelhouses will have such ports, (windows) reason being this: When on water, the sun will reflect with great intensity at times causing interference in the navigation of the vessel, blinding one's eye to see. When ports, (windows) are at a tilt as Mike referred to, this helps greatly to reduce glare reflecting from the surface of water and or directly from the sun. Sometimes in the Port, (window) directly forward the helmsman (pilot) there may be what appears to many to be a circle in that port not knowing why. This is a motorized device that when in effect, spins at extremely high rpms (revolutions-per-per-minute) to keep water from storms and angry seas from striking the port and demimishing the helmsman view. On this tug, some in the maritime world referring to tugs today as tractor tugs, these tilted ports, (windows) also serve a second porpoise, to get a better view downward to the aft deck closest to the operations structure know as the vessels superstructure. I find these vessels we see today in this video as unique indeed. Most critical is the tethering (connection) of barge and tug for ovious reasons. 🧐

Towson here! Sam in Maryland! We see these technical vessels up and down the Chesapeake Bay. They are usually involved with channel dredging and maintenance. Also Articulated Tug & Barge rigs are very common in the Gulf of Mexico as well as up and down the East Coast. The navigation BRIDGE is VERY HIGH so they can see OVER a large STACK of CONTAINERS piled up on a barge they are pushing. Great video! Thanks Mike.👍

@@vibewithmike much more difficult here because there is no canal / viewing area in spread out Baltimore harbor. Plus it is so industrial that there is very little direct access. I saw them up close on the water over the years from our sailboats. There are tour boats and water taxis, but they only get so close to the industrial areas of the harbor. On the other hand, the Chesapeake Bay is a beautiful body of water. There are cruises and tours available much like the Star boats in Duluth.

my son made a one-handed interception in the endzone to keep the other team from scoring with 33 seconds left in the game. We see alot of tug and barge combos on the Ohio River. Usually one tug, 3 barges but recently we saw a 2-tug, 6 barge combo. Also, we are not experiencing low water levels like on the Mississippi River.@@vibewithmike

When I was in the US Navy and since, I have heard the bridge called several names, like bridge, fore-castle or bow-castle(bridge on the front of ship), aft-castle or stern-castle (stern of the ship), mid-castle (middle of the ship) , fore-house, aft-house, mid house, and more.... Civilian cargo ships generally, but not always, have either fore or aft. Many military ships have mid because it allows for better 360 view. There are exceptions that are sometimes strange. Strange and yet they are that way because they have a purpose.

Fantastic video and truly fascinating. At 16:25 you give a good side profile of how the tug 'slots in' to the barge itself which I suppose by design is to give greater rigidity for longer traveling as opposed to conventional barge moves up rivers etc. But another interesting point here is just how perfectly still the water remains. The slow speed is one thing but you would think there would be greater water displacement around the vessel then there actually is. are we right in assuming that is perhaps a bulbous bow on the Innovation coming into full effect? Hey Bro! The Presque Isle is a unique too apparently. She is the only 1000'ft combo barge on the lake! I also while searching for this saw that the Iglehart was once attacked by a U-Boat! No other great lakes ship can probably say that! 😱😱😱

I notice in a lot of your videos you report that the green gate is open? What is the significance of the green gate being opened vs closed? Is it a weather related issue? Thanks. Love the videos.

Thanks for watching the videos. Thank you so much for the questions. Yes, there was a time when no gate was on either pier but that changed in the 70s after a very sad incident. It is there for safety. They will close it when there’s ice and other conditions that could be dangerous for people in the winter and when bad storms hit during the summer, they’ll have it closed as well.
